The Giants acquired linebacker Jon Beason from the Panthers in a trade late Thursday night, pending his passing of a physical in New Jersey Friday morning, according to a source. The terms of the deal were not immediately clear, but a late-round pick in the 2014 draft is the most likely price. Fox Sports first reported the trade.

Beason lost his starting job as an outside linebacker for the Panthers this week, beaten out by former Giant Chase Blackburn.

Beason was a three-time Pro Bowler for the Panthers between 2007 and 2010, but he has played only seven games since tearing his Achilles tendon in the 2011 season opener, and just one snap in the Week 3 game against the Giants. He also had microfracture surgery. Passing his physical with the Giants is not a slam dunk.

The Giants are not deep at linebacker and have taken chances on first-round talents at the position in the recent past, most notably Keith Rivers, who was acquired from the Bengals in a trade for a fifth-round pick before the 2012 season. Beason could take Rivers' place.

The deal for Beason is the first between Giants general manager Jerry Reese and former Giants personnel guru Dave Gettleman, now Carolina's general manager.

Beason is in the final year of his contract, which voids at the end of this season. His salary is $1 million for 2013.

I have to give props to Reese for at least trying something.

Now, that being said, the time to look for NFL quality linebackers was back in March, not in October. There's not going to be a whole lot of quality guys on the trading block.

Word is Giants are sending a late round pick to Carolina for him. I seen from Mike Garafolo on Twitter. I get a link if it happens.

My friend sent me a text last night saying it's pending the physical.

It's wayyyyy too late now. Late round or not, it's silly when you need to try to rebuild through the draft and FA NEXT year and won't have any money to do it.

This tells me management is not giving up on the season. Beason is a very good LB from my limited view of the Panthers. We can't build the team thru the draft alone... This is a very good move by the FO.

I didn't want Beason in the draft, I sure don't want him several years and an achilles later.

Hope I'm wrong about him, but I'm not optimistic....

Well Idk now that I've been reading about his injuries... we're essentially giving up a late draft pic for someone who was great but got beaten by Chase Blackburn. I'm against this move now.. but maybe the Giants are trying a last ditch effort to save the season.

It might not be bad if he can still play in the middle. He did have a nice start to his career before he was injured and then Wally Pipped by Luke Keuchly.

I'm starting to think Reese doesn't know how evaluate LB. We are trading for a guy who lost his job to a guy who we thought wasn't good enough for our team. Geez

That, and the Clint Sintims and Phillip Dillards of the world are making me think you're right.
