The official start of free agency is less than an hour away, but the Giants are already cranking on at least one player.

The team is in the mix for former Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle and, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the 2009 Pro Bowl selection is expected to be in East Rutherford for a visit Friday.

While we're handing out credit for scoops, let's mention Adam Schein of Sirius Radio, SNY, FOXSports.com and your corner bodega because he's been talking Rolle to the Giants for a few days now. I was telling my man Scheiner I was hearing similar stuff, but I'd be lying if I said I was as strong on this one as he was from the jump.

One other guy who had picked up on some Rolle-to-Giants vibes is Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett. Schein had him on Sirius Thursday afternoon and pressed him on where he thought Rolle might end up. Dockett threatened violence against his then-teammate, who was cut a few hours later, if he didn't end up back in Arizona. Late Thursday night, Dockett tweeted he had spoken to Rolle and that he knew what was about to go down.

"I'm speechless I'm going to Bed," Dockett wrote. "I'm done with twitter BYE!"

The Bears and Dolphins have been mentioned as Rolle's other suitors, with the Cardinals apparently also making a push to bring him back. Earlier Thursday, it seemed Chicago was Rolle's most likely landing spot. But the tide has turned and the Sun-Sentinel report certainly makes it seem like the Giants are in the driver's seat in the race to land a player who clearly impressed them with an excellent performance at Giants Stadium last season.

Stay tuned.

Kinda on the fence about this. I think he's a solid safety, but I don't think he deserves to be the highest paid one. Really the only move I wanted big blue to make in free agency was for Dansby, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen. :(

I wanted Dansby too, bad. I know theres concerns about him converting back to a 4-3 like he did in college, but I think he'd do great. But I also like this scenario. We already have some good, young LB's that will now get a chance to make a difference. (i.e. Goff, Sintim and Keihl). But can you imagine how our secondary would look with a healthy Cweb and Ross at the corners, and Rolle and KP at safety?

I want Antrel Rolle wearing a Giants' uniform. Coupled with Phillips in the safety position, it'd be one of (if not THEE) best safety duo in the NFL.

I also want Danby to come over to the good guys and put on that nice blue uniform. He'd be great working with our young linebackers and would solidify the team behind the d-backs.

This could be a great year if those two get signed. Just think.....new stadium opening up, a vastly improved defensive backfield, and the young crop of recievers who have a year or a another year under their belt for Eli to throw to. Can't wait.

I think at draft time, Reese will be looking to shore up the O-line as well as pick up another RB......that's assuming our defensive holes are filled with pro-bowl free agents like Rolle and Danby.

Is it possible Antrel Rolle just seemed like a good safety because he's been playing next to Adrian Wilson?

That happened with a few Eagles safeties non named Brian Dawkins over the last several years.

Absolutely not. Rolle's coverage skills are unquestionable. He's very good. With all due respect to Adrian Wilson, at this point in there careers (which is a big caveat) it would be more likely that Adrian Wilson would be benefitting by playing next to Rolle.

Unfortunately I have read he wants top safety money of like $8 million + which isn't going to happen.

According to the latest news in the NYPost, the Giants have already offered close to that and they are saying it's pretty much a done deal. I hope so. I'd welcome him with open arms.

Giants, rolle Close to Deal

Giants, Rolle close to deal

1:38 PM, March 5, 2010 ι By PAUL SCHWARTZ

It might not take long for the Giants to make their first signing in free agency.

Safety Antrel Rolle is in for a visit today and by all accounts and reports he is already close to a contract agreement. Rolle was seeking a deal worth $8 million per season and it appears the Giants will come close to making that a reality.

Rolle turned down a six-year, $38.6 million offer from the Cardinals, who would like to keep him but are unwilling to pay him more than their other starting safety, Adrian Wilson.

The Dolphins are believed to have made a five-year offer to Rolle, a 27-year old converted cornerback. He would instantly move in as a starter in the Giants secondary and provide insurance in case Kenny Phillips cannot make it back all the way from knee surgery. If Phillips returns, he and Rolle would form a dynamic safety duo.

As for the Giants' own free agents, QB David Carr is reportedly headed to San Francisco for a visit with the 49ers. The Cardinals are also interested in Carr, who is likely to leave the Giants and sign elsewhere.

In the hunt for Rolle

When Antrel Rolle was released by the Cardinals Thursday, he became one of the biggest names on the free-agent market.

What are the possible landing spots for Rolle? According to an earlier report from NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora, the Bears, Cardinals, Dolphins and Giants are the teams in the hunt for Rolle. Notice that list includes the Cardinals, who would like to re-sign Rolle, but might be pushed out of the market by the $8 million per season he covets. Kent Sommers of The Arizona Republic says the Cardinals are confident Rolle likes Arizona, while his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he will remain in contact with the team.

So that door appears to be open.

La Canfora has also reported that Rolle is meeting with the Giants Friday. The Giants, with a need at safety, make a logical suitor. The Star-Ledger beat writer Mike Garafalo Tweeted Friday the Giants really want Rolle, after he had suggested they’re in the driver’s seat.

The Bears came on strong at the outset, negotiating a deal with Rolle on Thursday night, per the Chicago Tribune. And the Dolphins certainly made their intentions at safety clear by releasing veteran Gibril Wilson today.

People on NFL network saying that a deal is pretty much 90% done.

They say that Phillips future is still in the balance and that all reports show he is still trying to recover.

Yah, it's tough to shake arthritis, NFL Network.

Ha....maybe I'll run into you pdub. I plan on missing the St paddy's parade (on purpose), but I'll be hitting the taverns after the parade is over. I tend to hang out with the NYC cops (they like to hang out at St. Mikes on Clinton and sometimes Nips) and that has gotten me into trouble in the past. Those boys really, really like to drink and they simply think I can keep up and I can't. But that doesn't stop them from buying me more drinks than I can handle. They're a fun bunch of guys, but they can get you into trouble.

Anyway....which holes are you going to be stoppin at? Maybe we'll cross paths and we can toast the arrival of Rolle wearing the blue.
