If Romeo Crennel is fired by KC, Giants should go after him.

Manti Te'o would be so frickin' awesome on our team... too bad he's going in the top 10 picks, almost assuredly.

There's other ILB we could get, Alec Ogletree is beast and I think he may be a better pro then Te'o

Uh oh... let the battle of the football nerds begin :smartass:

Fish, report to duty :rules:

VG, I think JPP could still play DE in a 3-4, actually. And I'd prefer him there. I think he could be like JJ Watt in Houston's 3-4.

Eh, differentce of opinion I guess. What I want in a 3-4 de is a smaller DT. Hell even a full size DT. A guy that can hold his ground when double teamed and plays the run. Put at the athletic guys at olb.

I think while some of our players Could play in 3-4, it wouldn't be utilizing them fully.

I'm against such a move.

This...the era of the sideline to sideline LB as the prototype is gone. In the 80's everyone ran a variant of the 3/4. Then when the athletic DE's started to emerge in the early 90's everyone switched to the 4/3. The 3/4 was yesteryear's answer to the West Coast Offense and the Two Back Set...RB and HB out of the backfield for the swing pass. I think a 4-2-3-2...with an extra safety is the more viable option these days.

Hey guys, Boley said the reason he was not getting in there last week was the Giants were running the 3-4 most of the game so WTF are you talking about???? Do you count noses much?

injuries are apparently keeping Michael Boley off the field.

For years, Michael Boley has been a mainstay on the Giants’ defense, one of their most reliable linebackers. But on Sunday, he saw a steep decrease in snaps. And on Wednesday, he admitted that the decline in playing time left him “a little bit” frustrated.

“A little bit,” he said. “But coaches make the decision, we’re just employees. . . . That’s what they felt like going with, so, you know, you play it.”

“I was surprised. But then again, it’s not my call.”

Throughout last season, Boley rarely left the field, serving as a key leader for the ‘D’. But against Baltimore, he played only 25% of the defensive snaps, despite the fact that the Giants often used four linebackers at once. On Monday, Tom Coughlin had called Boley’s reduction in playing time “a cumulative health thing,” hinting that the back, hip and hamstring issues the linebacker dealt with all season had compromised his ability.

Boley said Wednesday that those issues “could have” been a factor, and he admitted that 2012 has not been “how I would like it to be.” But he added that he’s “still here, still playing,” and that he felt he could have been effective on Sunday, especially since “at this time of year, nobody is 100%.”

“I could have played more, I think so,” Boley said. “It’s water under the bridge now."

I'd love to see Crennel here, and he's got some serious Giants roots.

As far as a 3-4, Canty was a 3-4 DE already, and JPP has the strength to excel there as well. The problem is our linebackers are already the weak link of the D, and without some serious retooling there we'd be cutting off our nose to spite our face. Kiwi could probably be a decent LB but we don't have a thumper MLB or a speed guy to put next to him.

I'd be a tough sell.

yeah, they ran a 4-4 quite a bit, not a 3-4.

and to back that up:

Defensively, tackling is a problem again and the pass rush has been non-existent as the Giants went to a 4-4-3 package for the majority of the game.

Agree. We don't have good enough linebackers to run a 3-4. I'm hoping they move Kiwi back to the line and make a serious effort to retool the entire linebacking corps. With Osi leaving and Tuck looking bad we need another pass rusher.

Here's the thing... all this talk of 3-4, 4-3, 4-4-3, all that... the best thing you can be is adaptable. Look at New England. They have the ability to switch between 4-3 and 3-4 all day long. I believe the standard defense of the future keeps the offense guessing. First down? You might see a 4-3... you might see a 3-4. You might see a Kiwanuka at end with his hand in the dirt, and you might see a shift before the snap and Kiwi stand up and play LB. And a DT like Canty might become a DE in that scenario.

You have to have adaptable players to do this, but what is a requirement is a very strong NT. Linval, MAYBE could be that. I just don't know.

I dont think the formation means nearly as much as finding 11 guys who want to play the game at maximum effort and speed

We need a DC who can motivate men........Perry Fewell does not impress me as a cheerleader/motivator. We suffer from "Affluenza" an abundance of Lombardi's

Mathmatically we should only be winning a SB every 32 yrs not every 4 years

Last year Manning set a record for come from behind victories. That says something about Manning; but it also says something about the performance of our defense.

Yes, they did pick it up during the playoffs. But the fact of the matter is they did't even play well enough to get into the playoffs this year, and if it wasn't for some exceptional offensive play, they wouldn't have last year, either.

Crennel is a very good defensive coordinator. Considering that the strength of our defense is now in decline (whether we want to believe it or not), this might be the time to switch strategies and take our lumps. Because if this year is any indicator, we're going to have to retool the dline anyway.
