The Giants' dream season was thrown into turmoil Saturday when Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub and linebacker Antonio Pierce tried to hide the gun, police sources said.

Burress is expected to be arrested on felony weapons charges in the coming days, while Pierce's attorney was in frantic discussions with cops last night to stave off criminal charges, police sources said.

Burress' latest self-inflicted wound came after he was initially turned away from the LQ nightclub in midtown because he was packing heat, police sources said. Burress, 31, who was sporting flashy jewelry and carrying loads of cash, told club management he needed the gun to protect himself, sources said.

The mercurial Giant was waved inside the crowded Latin-themed club on Lexington Ave. about midnight. He downed several drinks, making already jittery security guards more nervous about his weapon.

As Burress was being led into a VIP area, with a drink in his hand, the gun slipped down his pants leg. He reached for the weapon, but fumbled it and it went off, sources said. The bullet tore through Burress' already injured right thigh, police said.

"[The bullet] went in and out. No bones," Chief Michael Collins, a police spokesman, said.

Pierce, 30, rushed to his bleeding teammate and applied pressure to the wound as Burress screamed in pain amid the hip-hop beats piping through the club, sources said. As he worked to slow the bleeding, Pierce berated Burress for bringing a loaded handgun into a club.

Panicking, Burress told his teammate not to call 911 for an ambulance, sources said.

Pierce helped the bloodied receiver out of the club before taking off with the gun and stashing it somewhere in New Jersey, sources said.

Burress was afraid to go to the hospital, but two hours after the shooting, at 2 a.m., his wife, Tiffany, and a friend escorted him to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell. He was treated and released at about 12:45 p.m., sources said.

But a hospital spokeswoman denied that Burress was ever there.

Cops only learned about the incident after Giants employees quietly reached out to the NYPD to report it, sources said.

When plainclothes officers from the NYPD and local cops arrived at Burress' mansion in Totowa, N.J., about 5 p.m., they were turned away by his wife - even after ringing the bell five times. "We've been through a lot today," a woman said from inside the home.

"Ma'am, we're talking to a box," one of the cops said, referring to the intercom system outside the house. After the chaotic night, Pierce headed to Washington Saturday to prepare for the Giants game against the Redskins today. His attorney told cops Pierce would cooperate if he wouldn't be charged, sources said.

Fuck.

in depth report on sports center right now

Chris Mortensen Said part of Burress' contract states he gets paid $100,000 per game just to be on the active roster. He won't be getting that money now. Also the Giants put in a "Detrimental to the team" clause into to the contract. and they have all rights' to t go after that money. Antonio Pierce being involved makes it "team detrimental".

we may be off the $11 million dollar cap hit hook.

If the Giants want to keep Burress I feel he will have to go to some sort of Soul searching Rehab treatment. If not Dump him as soon as we can .

I cannot see him being charged with a crime, Burress shot himself with his own gun. Plex did not want to take it to the hospital so he had AP take it home with him. The only problem could be if it was an illegal gun, and AP took it knowing it was illegal.

From the Daily News:

Burress is there and Antonio Pierce is there and it seems that Pierce, trying to be a better teammate than Burress has become, ends up with the gun after it goes off. There is probably more news to come on this, none of it good for Burress, who it seems did not have a valid permit to be carrying a weapon. But this much is sure already: On Friday night at The Latin Quarter on Lexington Ave., Burress was another sports idiot with a gun out on the town.

I'm not surprised by this. I knew the Giants were covering all bases when they took their time to work up a contract.

Good. Cut him and go after the signing bonus.

Anyone that does not think this is a POTENTIAL Tiki Barber 06 retirement type disaster has forgotten that fiasco. I am not saying it will be, but boy is this one BIG distraction that Tom and the coaches and the players council will have to deal with. Lets see what they got to dig in and ignore it.

I see Pierce was yelling at Plax. You know what Pierce, wtf are you thinking hanging out with this turd.

if this goes beyond one iota of nothing but bad press for Pierce they can cut his ass too for all I care.

Yeah I see the same thing. Also what puts him in good stead is that he immediately berated him in front of witnesses for being an asshole for bringing the rod in the first place. But if I were Pierce I would give up the Big Brother role and find another project to mentor. Plax is too hot these days.

I think he was more trying to ride herd on this asshole in an attempt to put him in a controlled situation to blow off some steam while still being looked after. The only problem with that is that the guy being ridden has to be more cooperative (and sane) than Plax has proven to be the past few months.

@ Prince Nas

I think Plax had the license to have the gun, but not the permit to carry the gun in public. Remember, constitutionally, you are allowed to have a gun in your home, as long as you have a lincese for it. But you are NOT allowed to carry a gun out in public without a permit.

I doubt it will balloon out of control. Let's not make this one more than what it is.. one unstable player who has to get it together. Our team is playing very well no matter what. I sense a silver lining here guys... assuming Plax doesn't go to jail and is able to come back on the field, this maybe the very wake up call he needed. He's at a cross-roads, learn from this and be a model citizen, or keep fucking up and we say goodbye.

The "silver lining" I am seeing is, we get rid of Plax take that bonus and give it to Jacobs and Ward. Bump Hixon to number one, Toomer at number two and Moss / S Smith at slots. Manningham and Tyree for depth.

That too but I'm hoping for the better scenario. Remember, Plax is capable of playing lights out.

It all depends on what Reese decides, I'm thinking he sits down with Plax one more time and they do from there. I know the franchise likes the guy and players around the locker room too.

I think he gets put on a short leash and we'll see what happens in the coming years.

And considering that Reese has tried to get in contact with Plax and hasn't heard from him yet, I'd say it's not looking good.

WARD IS THE THIRD PLAYER THOUGHT TO BE AT SCENE OF SHOOTING?

Posted by Mike Florio on November 30, 2008, 1:49 p.m. EST

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that running back Derrick Ward is the third Giants player who is believed to have been present when receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally created two new holes in his body.

To be clear, we’re reporting only that Ward is the person to whom media reports regarding a third Giants player are referring. Ward is accused of no wrongdoing, and his role (if any) in the incident and its aftermath is unknown.

As to the second player, linebacker Antonio Pierce, Jay Glazer of FOX described his potential criminal charge as “obstruction of justice.”

But if (as reported by multiple media outlets) Pierce took possession of the gun in New York City in order to transport the gun out of New York City, he could face the same illegal possession charge that could send Plaxico away for a minimum of 3.5 years.

UPDATE: We’re now hearing conflicting information as to whether Ward was the third guy. Another source tells us that Ward wasn’t the third guy. The police think it was Ward, but the team thinks it was someone else.
