I fucking loathe the strength of schedule stat.

1. You're playing against the teams in your division for a playoff spot. Outside of 2 games, you play the exact same opponents in the season. 2 games does not a overwhelming advantage make.

2. Teams change drastically from one year to the next to the point of going from the bottom of a division to the top of a division when they get one or two big time pieces in place.

3. Going hand in hand with #2, strength of schedule doesn't take into account trending teams. It's a static statistic.

If strength of schedule was a projection, based upon factors such as the 3-year trend, a tiered QB ranking based on stats, as well as the trending records of the teams to be played...then maybe, just maybe I'd pay it a little more attention.

It's like the drafting of players based upon 40-time alone.

You really can't tell the strength of schedule until the season is over. Nobody has any idea how strong or week any of these teams are going to be.

Agreed. There are always surprises, both up and down. And, even bad teams can be more difficult to play in certain spots. A team coming off a humiliating loss the week before tends to play better than their norm, for instance. Or a team at home on national TV can play over their heads. You also have variables like a short week, going on the road, against a team playing their 2nd straight home game. Or playing a team that had played on Thursday and has 10 days to rest & prep for you. Of course, it's up to the superior team not to let these factors affect them but it does fuck with the equation when you start guessing what will be easy games Vs hard ones.

Or the Giants will start 6-2 only to go on a nose dive no matter who they're playing.
