Giants express interest in ex-Bills DE Mario Williams

The start of free agency is still a few days away, but the Giants’ chase for pass rushing help has already begun.

The Giants reached out to the agent for Mario Williams and expressed some interest in the former Buffalo Bills defense end, a league source told the Daily News, but not enough interest to prevent him from making his first free-agent visit to Miami. The 31-year-old Williams was on his way to meet with the Dolphins on Saturday, according to the NFL Network.

It wasn’t immediately known if he had plans to visit the Giants or any other teams, too.

Even if Williams does sign with the Dolphins, it could benefit the Giants because it could make it much easier for them – or any other team – to pry defensive end Olivier Vernon away. The Dolphins placed the “transition tag” on Vernon, their 25-year-old defensive end, guaranteeing him a one-year deal for $12.7 million. Vernon can still solicit offers in free agency and the Dolphins would have the right to match, but they are not expected to match any significant offer.

They definitely wouldn’t match if they can land Williams instead.

It’s unclear how aggressive the Giants planned to be for either player. According to a team source, they are planning to spend big on defensive help, particularly along the defensive line if possible. They likely would prefer someone younger than Williams, who had five sacks last season and was cut by the Bills on Tuesday. But he could be a good fallback option – and a less expensive one – if they’re unable to land a player like Vernon or Denver’s Malik Jackson when the market opens on Wednesday.

Williams was unproductive in Buffalo last season, but he appeared miscast (and unhappy) in Rex Ryan’s 3-4 defense. He had double-digit sacks in each of the three previous seasons and some NFL scouts think he could revive in his career playing a 4-3 scheme like the Giants run.

I think Williams signing would be more of the same that we've had. I'd rather have Ayers and a much lower cost than Williams. But ultimately, we need to get BOTH younger AND better.

It appears they are both asking for 10m a year. I'd rather give that to Williams.

Ayers is asking for 10 mil?! He was good but holy shit that's at least double what he's worth.

yeah, that surprised me, too......but I guess, in today's dollars, he's worth closer to that than we would have thought. I'd rather spend, say, 14M on Malik Jackson or maybe 13M on O Vernon. Would also shell out for Trevathan & Gipson. Prefer to stay away from the over 30 "former Pro Bowler" type.

Well...they can ask what ever they want but I am not surprised he'd try. DLineman are getting ridiculous money recently.

Pay up or another horrible season defensively because we don't have a pass rush. We're not going to be enjoying the 2016 season thinking about how much money the Giants saved by being cheap.

Vernon received the Transition Tag. That essentially makes him a high paid RFA with no compensation going to the Dolphins if he signs elsewhere.

Correct. And he's guaranteed almost 13 million next year. It's now going to take almost a Robert Quinn contract to keep a 26 year old from signing that tag. He's not worth that and that effectively takes him off the market

If that tag works the same way the franchise tag does (not guaranteed) then it may not take as much as you're thinking. Either way, we still need to explore how much he's gonna ask.

As every day passes, there will be a bit more clarity. The Giants are approximately $56 million under the salary cap (with more coming). They have money to spend. How are they going to do it?

• Cross veteran defensive end Mario Williams off the list. He's not in play for the Giants at this time, a person with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media.

Williams, 31, is coming off a down year in Buffalo with just 19 tackles and 5.0 sacks. He was cut by the Bills and wanted to make four or five quick visits, with the Giants a likely stop.

But the visit never materialized as Williams reportedly was looking for a deal in the $10 million per year range. The price may have been more than the Giants were willing to pay as they concentrate their efforts elsewhere at defensive end right now.

Some of that focus is directed at Jason Pierre-Paul right now.
