Giants, Saints Came Close To Making Deal Involving DT Cofield

The New Orleans Saints and New York Giants came close to completing a trade for defensive tackle Barry Cofield during the draft, according to league sources.

The Saints and Giants discussed a deal Friday that would have sent a second-day pick to New York in exchange for Cofield, according to sources. Talks advanced to the stage where the Saints were given permission to speak to Cofield, a restricted free agent who had a second-round tender placed on him.

However, the sides couldn't work out an extension. There remains potential for Cofield to be dealt -- the Giants drafted defensive tackle Linval Joseph in the second round and could end up playing Chris Canty inside more this year -- and New York hasn't shown a desire to extend his deal to this point.

The Saints are also expected to remain active. Several executives from other teams remain convinced New Orleans will deal tackle Jammal Brown this offseason, either for a player or a draft pick.

I don't see a need to upgrade Coefield. He is a decent back up.

Jay Alford, the new kid, Coefield

Canty and Bernard are garbage, and should be sent packing..........two huge FA BUSTS

Tuck can play DT with Tollefson, Osi, JPP, and Kiwi at DE

Tuck can play inside and outside.

I wouldnt want to see Cofield go, he was a 4th rounder who earned a spot on this team and has done nothing but been a solid starter for us. However I think we are overstocked at DT and I can see Bernard being released, I see us going into the season with Alford/Cofield/Canty/Joseph as our DTs. Cofield and Canty will start with Joseph being rotated in and Alford coming in on passing situations.

It might have something to do with this.

The Giants’ defensive tackle, who said a few months ago he had surgery last February to reconstruct his patella tendon, revealed Thursday he also underwent microfracture surgery because doctors found the cartilage in his trochlea (the area at the top of the femur, or thigh bone) was wearing away. Phillips underwent surgery last September to repair the same condition, which is known as patellofemoral arthritis.

“I had two procedures. He had one of the procedures I had but his is a slightly more severe case of that, so I have some idea of what the recovery is like,” Cofield said. “The good thing with him is he had his done in September and I had mine done in February, so he’s seven five months ahead of me already. If you would’ve added seven five months on to my recovery (before last season) I think I would have been good.”

Based on this, trading him now (especially for a second, considering we got him in the 4th round) wouldn't be such a bad idea.

see, i didnt think that at all bleedin.

but this shows a bit of something different.

Yah, I agree, all we ever hear is GOOD things about Cofield, this is COMPLETELY out of the blue.

I believe Tuck lined up at DT for almost he entire SB

I believe you're right. Strahan and Osi were the ends and Tuck's quickness gave interior linemen fits. They played him in the "off tackle" spot, set slightly off the line of scrimmage, giving him a little space to maneuver. He had double digit sacks that year and many thought he was the true MVP of the Super Bowl.

Maybe not every down but I would like to see them get back to that more this year.

I was one of those.......Tuck collapsed the Patriots OLine to the point of embarrassment

Tom Brady was on the ground all day and very very pissed......

Eli played well but Tuck was Superman that day

I'd be much more comfortable with Cofield staying put....Canty and Rocky Bernard have done jack shit. At least Cofield knows how to stay on the field.

This past week tells me two things:

1. Coefield's injury is worse than anybody thinks.

2. Phillips' injury has the team equally worried.

Tuck lining up inside is a PASS RUSHING STUNT ONLY. He is not a DT and I'd hate to see him try to stuff the middle every down.

I think they moved Tuck to DE because Strahan retired......Tuck was much more effective coming up the middle, stunting, and collapsing the pocket

Now with JPP Kiwi Tollefson, and OSI they can reload Tuck to DT where he was a human bulldozer

no, he was always an end, they just also like putting him inside on passing downs.

fine fine he played DT the SB year and for the entire SB but was always a DE

are you happy now ????? ..........as Charlie Brown would say GOOD GRIEF!!!!!!

Let me just say this, he enjoyed much much more success pushing the pocket and playing DT

Justin Tuck is a huge beast of a man who once ran down LT from behind 50 yds downfield when LT had a 10 yd head start

Hes a freak of nature and could play any position on the field if he chose to..........probably play pro basketball too

the difference between Tuck and JPP is not much.........they are physically similar........JPP is more athletic, and flexible in the hips.........I'd like to see them go at it in the Octogon

Tuck seems to carry more of his muscle below the hips than JPP

so while Tuck can play DT..........JPP would not prosper as much in the scrum

I think it would be a terrible mistake.

Yes it would've been. I think it's all a smoke screen anyway. Any team can field offers.. but I don't think the Giants took this one seriously anyway.

I agree, I think it would have been a terrible mistake to get rid of your only other starter at DT from last year...

Question, he was tendered at a 2nd round level, right? If we trade him during the draft, don't we get a 2nd rounder in the NEXT draft? What is this about a 4th in THIS years instead? Why would ever have done that?
