Winners — Giants

For all the questionable moves they’ve made this week — $7.1 million guaranteed for Dwayne Harris seems like a one-way ticket to regret — the Giants also made one of the best, sniping pass-catching back Shane Vereen from Super Bowl nemesis New England for just $5 million guaranteed. Vereen has had trouble staying on the field, and isn’t always the most efficient player. He’s also caught 99 passes over the past two seasons, averaging four receptions per game. He’s a perfect fit for the Giants’ quick-hitting passing attack, someone who can turn Eli Manning dumpoffs into big plays. That’s an element neither Rashad Jennings nor Andre Williams provides. It’s an element that could help send OC Ben McAdoo’s offense into liftoff during his second season in New York, all for half the price of Eddie Royal.

This is literally the only guy I've seen that thinks the Giants are doing a good job in free agency.

Really cause all I've read is how the Giant's have done well with what cap space they have.

Did people think we had like 40 million in cap space or something?

Yeah I think the rumors of us pursuing suh combined with all the holes we need to fill made people optimistic. We spent last season and that was kind of an anomaly.

That said, this is the first positive review I've seen for our offseason

Believe me when I say I'm 100% in favor of the Vereen signing and I hope Dwayne Harris plays up to his contract, however Reese's failure to at least bring in Mike Iupati, James Carpenter, or Orlando Franklin is a mistake imo. Add to that him allowing a $14M cap hit in JPP just sit there eating up space and I really can't be too happy about our off season so far. A lot of potentials have slipped away.

I think we did ok in FA... and given our financial situation, no one should expect doing better than ok. I'm guessing the thinking inside the FO (addressing your OL concerns here) is that we already have guys... they just didn't play last year due to injuries... Sure they let Walton go but that was expected all along... and they'll draft one or 2 guys in a few weeks. The level of talent among free agents wasn't all that great and no better than the guys we already have.

JPP's franchising is a stop gap to keep him from signing with another team and they have a few months to work out a long term deal... they just didn't have a choice.

I think the signing of Vereen and Harris will work out great for us... both came at a reasonable price and can contribute right away.

I like the signings. It's the abundance of misses that's driving me crazy. And we definitely had a choice with JPP. We could've worked out a deal with him all last season or anytime prior to the March 2nd Franchise Tag Deadline... just like we should be working on extensions for Eli and Prince right now, but for some reason we either enjoy waiting until the last minute to do everything or we're becoming the NFL's version of the CIA where every contract has to be a covert operation.

He's really just managed to strengthen positions we were already strong in and add depth to positions we are incredibly weak in...and in the meantime weakened other positions by falling asleep looking for a safety and letting corner depth go, not that Thurmond really had much impact here.

Where were we strong and why would we chase after a guy with an injury history like Thurmond who we gave a contract to so he can prove he can stay healthy and fail to do even that?

We are strong at both running back and wide receiver. We didn't need to waste money on either Vereen or Harris.

As for Thurmond, how about, "letting corner depth go and doing nothing to replace it." Does that work better?

I've said this before....

With respect to your first 2 points.. no and no. We are not strong at RB nor WR... reasons:

1. The RB position is physically demanding.. you always need 3 solid guys to rotate and at least 2 because you will have injuries at the position... when Jennings went down, Williams coudln't shoulder the load alone. Vereen just means we have 2 Jennings imho.

2. The WR position.. we have ODB... then who? Cruz? We don't even know how healthy he's going to be and even then... Randle is a good 4th WR... Harris can return kicks which means you and I can exhale knowing ODB isn't back there doing it.

I'll trust the FO on Thurmond... he was signed last year and did nothing... I'm guessing they know more about his work ethic than you and I... letting him go means we can replace with him with ANYONE... not just the draft.

i thought the vereen signing was solid. he's a specialist not just depth. harris will help too. it's just not sexy because these are basically our marquee acquisitions so far and we have holes everywhere.

i agree with thurmond and especially with corner depth, but we might shore that up before the offseason is over and maybe the team isn't confident that he's going to stay healthy

This is literally the only guy I've seen that thinks the Giants are doing a good job in free agency.

I've been a frequent Reese critic, and I haven't seen much this free agency to change my mind.

I understand that much of this is based on two factors:

1) Last year's free agency outlay.

2) JPP's franchise (price) tag.

But still, I'm not overly impressed with anyone other than Vereen.

Our record with free agent return specialists has been atrocious, too.

Let's hope our new linebackers are better than J-Will and Paysinger.....a low bar to clear.

Meaning there will be a contribution from him outside of special teams, and we will be a better team for it.

I'm most concerned about the lack of addressing the safety in a meaningful way. My hope is that TC knows something about Berhe that we don't.

I'm not concerned with guard, either. I think we'll be ok there with the group we have, and I would suspect a OL will be drafted in this class.

Along the specialist line, I see Darren Sproles as a specialist. Vereen is a dude who couldn't beat out numerous running backs that NE pulled from who knows where for any significant touches. I just don't see the point in paying for two Rashad Jennings when we could pay one and another drafted player or even Darkwa significantly less without a significant loss in production.

i see jennings as more of a complete back who you can run with on 1st and 2nd down with vereen being the third down/passing downs guy. it'd be nice if we could fill all rb needs with just two running backs but imo andre williams seems too limited thus far.

vereen isn't remarkable, but belichick doesn't really let any rbs shine in his system. i think he'd rather have 4 cheap guys that he uses with no discernible pattern that take up half the amount of cap space than most teams devote to their rb position
