  1. No, it takes the salary, which is not guaranteed, and converts it to bonus which is guaranteed. Bonus, for salary cap purposes, gets prorated over remaining years of contract. Salary, for salary cap purposes, is includeable in current year of contract. Take Rolle for example. 2012 salary is 6,750,000; bonuses 2,350,000 2013 salary is 7,000,000; bonuses 2,350,000 2014 salary is 7,000,000; bonuses 2,350,000 If we cut him today, we save 6.75 million on the cap, but we remain on the hook for the bonus money. The 7.05 million in bonus money gets accelerated into this year. So, cutting Rolle, contrary to what I may have posted earlier in another thread, would actually COST us 300K this year, but save us 9.35 million in each of the next two years. The magic date is June 1st. If we cut Rolle after June 1st of this year, the one year of bonus money is allocable to this year whereas the remaining two years of bonus money hit next year. So, cutting Rolle after June 1st this year would save 4.4 million this year, but create a hit next year of 4.7 million when he's not on the team. Now, if we reduce the 6.75 million salary to 0.75 million salary and give him a 6 million bonus...Rolle still gets paid the same amount this year. However, the cap number for THIS year gets reduced to 2.75 million (6 million bonus/3 remaining years + 0.75 million salary) + other previously allocated bonuses. However, the cap in the next two years would be 11.35 million each (9.35 current hit + 2 million added hit from restructure). Following this same example, if we then cut him next offseason pre-June 1st, we take a hit next year of 1.7 million (two years of bonuses totaling 8.7 million (2.35 + 2.35 + 2.00 + 2.00) less the 7 million savings on salary). If we cut him next offseason post-June 1st, we save 2.65 million next year (7 million salary savings less 4.35 bonus hit)...also creating a 4.35 million hit in the final year of his contract where he'd no longer be here.
  2. I hope...but unless he adds years or takes less money, there may not be much of a benefit there. Most of what's due him is not guaranteed/bonus money, rather it's salary. According to Spotrac, is salary this year is 6.75 million, next year is 7 million, and the year after is 7 million. So, converting the 6.75 to bonus money to split out over the next 3 years would save us 4.5, but would really kinda screw us next year and the year after.
  3. This... the more I thought about it, the worse I realized it'd be for Redskins. With rookie wage scale in place and a salary cap that didn't increase all that much, teams are pressed more and more to get contributions out of their draft picks. Building through free agency is more and more difficult while still managing your cap. So, with the Redskins screwing themselves pretty hard cap-wise AND mortgaging so many draft picks to presumably get RG3...they may have hurt themselves more than many realize. With Dallas, the number is significantly easier to deal with and with them having their draft picks, there's just slightly more pressure for their draft class to perform well. But the Redskins are much, much worse off.
  4. Wonder if this came before or after the T2 resigning...hats off to Baas either way.
  5. That's comforting, reassuring, and a fantastic signing. Webster-Thomas-Amukamara is just fine by me. We'll see what happens with Ross now in FA.
  6. Agreed that those two should come first and that there's little room for much else, unless we rework a few more contracts (Rolle, Canty)
  7. Again, I'd like the assurances he'd provide, but I just don't know that it's the kind of move the Giants are going to make given Brewer/Beatty/Diehl/draft pick at the OT position.
  8. Rolle's flexibility helped tremendously last year, going man coverage and then playing safety as well. His price tag is steep though. Canty is steep too, and I take more of an issue here because you just don't see the value. With Rolle, while his tag is high, it's just that you have an easier time justifying it. I'd love to see one or both of them restructure so as to create room for rookies, Goff, and T2
  9. There's an obvious hole there now without McKenzie....don't know if Brewer is able to step in yet or not. Don't know if Beatty comes back to left tackle and Diehl moves to right tackle. Despite our moves, we don't have an abundance of cap space so if this guy is a big name guy (I am not up on offensive linemen throughout the league), I doubt we make a serious play for him. As a fan, I'd like the assurance of a proven guy, but I also like when guys we draft pan out and become Giants for years to come. I think we'll draft OT too at some point to replenish depth. Bottom line though, a move in FA at OT depends heavily on the development of Brewer, which really, I have to believe only the coaches know anything about.
  10. There was a no-cap year during which teams were not supposed to front load contracts. Skins did to a large extent. Cowboys did to a lesser extent. Skins essentially have to pay back 36 million via reduced cap. So, if they're 36 million under this season, and carry none of it forward to next, they've paid their debt. OR, they can be 18 million under this year and 18 million under next year. Redskins will almost surely lose out on FAs as a result and will ultimately struggle to surround Griffin with weapons since they've mortgaged more than a few draft picks. For Cowboys, the number is only 10 million, but still a big hit.
  11. Vet minimum...not a dime more and sure, give him a shot. Would create flexibility come draft day.
  12. I agree that both would be good backup signings, but I just don't see the Giants pulling the trigger on either...at least not until a number of other teams get their shot at them. I think the Giants priorities should be T2 and Goff. With Kiwi able to slide back to DE if needed, I really think that makes Osi expendable.
  13. http://espn.go.com/n...lions-cap-space Link in case anyone wanted to actually read the article. It does say that they have to take the hit over the next two years however they see fit. So it's possible they don't take any hit this year and pay the piper in full next offseason. Laughing at the Redskins...36 million...even if split evenly over two years, that's 15% of a 120 million cap. Wonder if they knew this prior to trading away all the 1st round picks to get Griffin III? EDIT: Nas sucks...
  14. I fully expect Osi to walk next year unless he gets big time money, which the Giants won't give him due to his being 1 of 3 here on the team. I believe Tolly can be replaced internally by bringing up a practice squad guy. And given the youth we have at LBer, we have to give them a chance to show what they've learned. I would love to see the Blackburn signing too given his late season efforts, but I just don't see that happening.
  15. Exactly, I don't fault Smith for this. I would've liked Smith to sign the long term deal offered him the year prior to his signing with the Eagles, but once he got hurt, I can't fault him for taking what he could in Philly. And because he didn't do much in Philly, whether due to their system, his lingering injury, or his inability to work in that system...he should be on the market for cheap, which is why I think we might want to at least give him a look.
  16. I really think division rivals are overstated by talking heads/fans and are really not the dire enemies they once were. If a Giants player was in Philly for a game, I'd think it probable that they might go out for a beer after the game if they developed a friendship with a player from the Eagles. I don't know that that would have happened in years past. My references to Tiki being a malcontent and dividing a locker room would date back to when he was still playing, just as his original questioning of Eli's leadership would have.
  17. That, I'll agree with, but you could throw San Francisco in that mix too. But that said, I think Denver has clearly show more interest.
  18. Not trying to pick your post apart, but "Goodbye Depth" suggests that there's be none remaining. Tolly was great on ST as well. I'm hoping we get a chance to pick him back up.
  19. Cause 3 probowl DEs isn't depth? I like Tolly a lot too, but given Tuck, Osi, and JPP...I don't see him staying for anything more than vet minimum. If he catches on elsewhere, good for him and I wish him the best. He spelled our guys very well and seems like a good teammate.
  20. At the end of the day, forgiving Smith for going after a larger contract is much easier than forgiving Tiki for being a malcontent. I agree that Eli's attempts at leadership may have been comical, but you can't vocalize that. You fall in line behind him and support him. You don't mock him and essentially divide a locker room.
  21. Wants to and Has to are two different things. Peyton hurts himself financially if he requires Wayne to come along. I think Manning is open to it, but I don't know that he'd make it a condition of his signing.
  22. Not saying it'll happen. That said, I try not to hold grudges. If he makes a humble return, especially contract-wise, than I think he's paid his dues for the mistake he made. Not to mention, if he can return to his former self, he'd be a nice 3rd WR. I remember the year he made all the 3rd down catches for 1st downs all too well. Guys like Tiki, who burned his bridges, and even from the other shore continued to torch any relationship he had...that, I'll hold a grudge against. But if Tiki would admit to being an idiot and admit to making a poor choice by leaving when he did...than I'd be forgiving of him too. This, I don't see happening.
  23. Agreed. And if Eli hadn't worked out, we would've screwed ourselves pretty badly. Up until this past season, I still didn't think that Eli was THAT much better than Roethlisberger or Rivers would have been on our team. But as we stand today, Eli was worth the trade.
  24. No doubt the Redskins are putting all their eggs in one basket here. If the RG3 is a bust or if they can't surround him with some WRs and OLine...and at the same time get some youth on defense, it'll set them back another decade.
  25. Yeah, the Manning/Fitz show would be fun to watch. I still think that for Arizona, Miami, or SF....that bringing in Manning/Wayne/Mike Wallace...would make any of those 3 clear favorites to run deep in the playoffs. A team like Miami or Arizona could leave Wayne off that list given Marshall and Fitz.
