They need to do something with those helmets. There should be some sort of give to the crown of the helmet, sort of like a spring/bumper or something.

This year, I thought if Coughlin was tossed that Reese should be gone too. I understand the need to switch gears after 12 years. I'm starting to warm up a bit to the McAdoo hire because from here out, the ax is hanging over Reese's head. The only reason this team was even in most games was because of the offense....keeping some continuity going while they rebuild the defense seems to make some sense. I really hope they bring Coughlin back as a consultant....that's a shitload of coaching experience that can be kept inside this organization and I think the front office needs all the help they can get. Plus, if Reese fucks the dog (high probability), the Giants could dump him and Coughlin could assume interim duties. My spidey senses tell me that Coughlin stays with the Giants, with a job that gives him a shitload of flexibility. Mara should sweeten the pot by offering Chris Snee a gig as well.

Great post. I don't agree with everything, but the effort you put into it allows for objective discussion. My main criticism of Reese is one of philosophy, especially as it regards the defense and linebackers. Defensive players and coaches have gone through this team like shit through a goose under Reese. Reese inherited a top 10 defense with the most fearsome pass rush in the NFL. Look at them now, 9 years later. Meanwhile, I just watched the first week of the playoffs, and saw linebackers absolutely dominate the action. Reese was asked about linebackers years ago, and arrogantly replied "who were the linebackers in 2007?".... Implying linebackers were next to useless, and insulting solid guys like Pierce and Mitchell. In 2011, Reese had to be arm twisted into bringing Chase Blackburn back while the season was hanging from a thread. In short, our GM is the worst defensive GM I've seen in my history as a Giants fan. Granted it's a small sample size, but Reese clearly doesn't understand that you can't put all your eggs in the basket of a defensive end. Teams have been keying into the structural flaws of this defense for years.... Neutralize JPP, and have your way at the 2nd level, Anyway great post, thanks for taking the time to demonstrate how badly Reese sucks.

Good post. I think McAdoo did a good job with Eli, but like you said, the inference seems to be that Coughlin was the one at fault last season. I will say that last year there were a few games where I questioned some of the late game decisions and clock management, but I think those situations were driven by the pressure of roster weakness; with a stronger defense, I don't see Coughlin pushing the envelope as much. Anyway, I think the McAdoo move is a C+ move which follows the F grade I give for tossing Coughlin under the bus in favor of Reese. To your point, I think 2016 will suck. I have no confidence in our GM or our training staff to field a talented roster and keep them healthy.

+1 great post Compounding the issue is the holes have been filled largely by higher-priced free agents which then forces tough (and usually wrong) decisions on new contracts. Linval Joseph and Black Unicorn earned their new contracts. Thurmond walked to Philly and did a nice job converting to safety. Reese misses more than he hits, and much more than he admits.

I hate the entire penalty. They should redesign the helmets, and/or outlaw passing plays inside the hashmarks. That play over the middle has become completely overpowered thanks to the penalties it draws. It's nearly impossible to perform a proper form tackle on a "defenseless" receiver. At the very least, they should focus on the defender... too often the penalty is called because the receiver is putting himself out there. Or, they should should be more lenient on pass interference or holding.

Today's playoffs - especially Pittsburgh/Cincy - demonstrated how important linebackers are. It was like night and day compared to the Giants defense. Man, we have a long, long fucking way to go.

Just imagine if Coughlin took that job, and the Eagles get into the playoffs. Ugh.

...and that is saying a lot. Fortunately, the genius who built this roster is still a Giant.

The 3-4 defense, with good linebackers, would be more effective v mobile QBs, fast tight ends, and pass catching running backs. But our GM sucks balls so I expect another few years of shitty defense until Reese is fired.
