Return Specialist Josh Cribbs considering signing with the Giants

After hitting a whole lot of teams, Josh Cribbs has settled on 4 teams he is willing to play for: Raiders, Giants, Jets, or Lions!

I can't think of a reason he'd narrow the list to the Raiders unless he thinks he can get twice as much money. And the Jets and Lions....well, they're the Jets and Lions.

Who knows...maybe he'll be wearing a Giants uniform before long. From ProFootballTalk

"Free-agent Browns receiver Josh Cribbs eventually will be former Browns receiver Josh Cribbs.

His potential next destination has been limited to four suitors, barring an unexpected development. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Cribbs, an eight-year veteran, will sign with the Raiders, Giants, Jets, or Lions.

Cribbs visited the Raiders, Giants, and Jets last week. He has arrived on Monday in Detroit.

A potent return specialist, Cribbs has never fully blossomed as a receiver. The former college quarterback at Kent State has, from time to time, contributed via the Wildcat formation".

I'd be all for having a return specialist on the team and let Wilson concentrate on the running game while saving his body for the job he was hired to do.

That would be awesome. Return specialist and depth guy at the WR spot.

I think his career stats prove that he can't catch a ball when it's thrown at him. He's a special teams master. Not only leading the league in returns, but also been outstanding on kick coverage team throughout his career. He has led his team in tackles as well as return yards multiple times.

If he was on our Special Teams, he'd be great. Hopefully...we get ourselves a kicker that puts the ball through the goal post when we need it! That could be a bigger concern for our ST over the long haul if we don't get that settled before October rolls around.

Tynes is gone. We have a competition between Josh Brown and David Buehler ("Buehler, Buehler...Buehler...")

Brown is a 10 year vet having played for 4 teams, the last was Cincinnati. He was the highest paid kicker in history. Hit a 60 yd field goal in preseason game against the Dolts.

Buehler is a 4 year vet having played all 4 years for Dallas. Big (make that HUGE) leg...not very accurate (ranked 30th out of 34 for accuracy). Used only for kickoffs at Dallas after several key missed field goals.

My bet is Brown will win the job.

34 fumbles in 8 years

Yea I heard that too. Remember Tiki and AB also had fumble problems till it was corrected by the coaching staff.. I think the Giants would do the same thing with this guy...

Yea I figured. It's just that I literally check the Daily News, NY Post and NJ.com everyday... and nothing was mentioned. But yea.. I hope we find a better replacement.

More than likely, Josh Brown is our guy, as Bleedin' said, unless Buehler can discover some accuracy.

I hope Cribbs will sign. The fumbles are concerning, but you know Coughlin will put enormous pressure on Cribbs to fix that problem. He would allow us to keep an explosive weapon as a kick returner while allowing David Wilson to just be a running back. And he would provide some depth at the slot receiver behind Cruz. I think Eli even has a chance to make something more out of him than he was able to be under the QB play in Cleveland thus far in his career. I think that is a major part of his decision making process, who is at receiver already, and which QB will allow him to make the most of his opportunities. He might want to go to the Lions because Stafford throws the ball a lot more and with Titus Young gone, the Lions will likely have an open competition at WR to line up across from Calvin Johnson, and also at the slot. Here's who they have other than Megatron at the position:

Ryan Broyles (probably the opening day slot guy for them)

Nate Burleson (coming off a broken leg and the front runner to start across from Calvin)

Troy Burrell

Kris Durham

Corey Fuller (rookie, 6th round pick)

Lance Long

Kassim Osgood

Brian Robiskie

Devin Thomas (yes, OUR Devin Thomas, who has un-retired and signed with the Lions)

Cody Wilson

Mike Thomas, (a strong candidate behind Burleson and Broyles)

There may be opportunity there in Detroit, but we also have opportunity on our roster, where we are much more unsettled at WR after Nicks, Cruz, Randle, and I would say Louis Murphy. There is room here for Cribbs. Does he want to try and make plays with Stafford or Eli?

I can't imagine he'll roll the dice with Oakland or the Jets because of the QB situation. But I think he could very well sign with Detroit and I would completely understand that decision. A lot of passes to go around in that offense.

I imagine that he's being offered league minimum or slightly above that. He can't command huge dollars as a return specialist. I agree with Jim that he probably wants to get more playing time as a receiver and after Murphy, it's a wide open field.

I can say one thing pretty much for sure. If the Giants do sign him, bye bye Jernigan...whose career at returning kicks has been anything but stellar. And if Cribbs was thrown into the slot position, he couldn't do any worse than Jernigan.

Cribbs was a QB for years...he could on rare occasions, play the wildcat and screw with opposing defenses.

Given the Giants' stubbornness I doubt they leg with JJ just yet... at least not with Cruz not signed yet.

Factoring in who's throwing the ball I'd say the Giants and Lions are the teams of choice (assuming money is equal among all 4 teams).. with the edge going to the Lions giving the cost of living in Detroit.

And LOL at cutting Jerrell Jernigan, an actual WR, for Josh Cribbs. That will never, ever happen.

Why not? I don't think that's ridiculous at all. I think Jernigan is very, very vulnerable this offseason. I don't think that the signing of Cribbs will automatically mean Jernigan will be cut, because there is a long way to go until final cuts are made, and injuries and such can be a factor. But Jernigan has not proven himself as a special teams player or a receiver, and when you're the 4th or 5th receiver on the roster, you have to be a contributor on specials. Because Cribbs is certainly a special teams contributor, he would be more valuable than Jernigan, who sucks in every way.

Agree that Jernigan is vulnerable. This is a crossroads training camp for him....but the idea of a return specialist always sounds good until you start counting roster spots. I wouldn't blow a spot on Cribbs.

Right now we have nobody returning kicks for us.. and I sure as fuck don't want Wilson doing that. if picking between JJ and Cribbs.. Cribbs wins hands down.

Good point. You can buy a house in downtown Detroit for one dollar. You can buy a whole block of houses for 10 dollars.
