  1. Kinda funny that a lot of the FA projections I've seen recently are former Giants players coming back.

I've seen Shiancoe and Shockey mentioned as FA TEs to fill the Ballard/other guy injuries.

I've seen Ryan Grant thrown out there as a Jacobs replacement.

I've seen Steve Smith and Plaxico Burress thrown out there as a Manningham replacement.

I don't see Shockey or Burress coming back. Though transgressions may be forgiven, I don't know that the burned bridges are totally rebuilt for these guys.

Ryan Grant seems to want starter money, but he's clearly not in the top group of running backs in FA and he MIGHT want to head to a team that focuses on running the ball a little more than what GB does.

Steve Smith seems to be the one that I'd be most interested in as a Giants fan. He'd clearly need to accept that he'd be fighting for the the 3rd WR role with Barden, Hixon, and Jernigan. He'd also need to accept to be paid as such. I actually feel bad for the guy. He made some poor decisions coming back from injury far too quickly and leaving what was a good situation with the Giants. I think that he's paid for those poor decisions by not having the 2nd SB ring he could have had. Might be reason enough for him to return. Then again, humility doesn't run all that rampant in the NFL and he may find an opportunity elsewhere.

  2. I liked Jacobs a lot. Restructured more than once for the good of the team...was a huge motivator and vocal leader. Seemed like an all around good guy. I wish him the best...right up until we play him...and I hope he breaks both legs in a horrific accident....only to be healed miraculously the following week.

  3. I heard someone say on an NFL podcast the RT is pretty much the only position guys with those skill sets play. You can see a Left Tackle move to Guard, a Guard move to Center, etc. but once a Right Tackle is done he's pretty much done.

I wouldn't call McKenzie done, but he's definitely done at what he was getting paid. He could hold the fort for someone (not us) for a year or two at a much lower cap hit than what he had last year, but that's about it in my opinion.

  4. Yeah but everything that's being said out of the S.F. camp is that they are focused on resigning Alex Smith, and they still have an offer on the table. If they haven't pulled their offer at this point, I think it's telling. And if Smith isn't crazy, he should sign that offer before they change their mind, because then he's going to be screwed. Really, that coaching staff rehabbed his career and that is the best place for him to be. He goes elsewhere and struggles again, his career path is going to be identical to David Carr or Sage Rosenfels.

Well SF had to be prepared in case Peyton was traded or in case Peyton signs elsewhere. So yeah, they had to offer Alex Smith a deal. Smith might be playing his hand by NOT signing, figuring that if SF goes after Manning, does NOT get him, Smith then can turn the screws to SF to pay him far more. It could ultimately backfire and they DO get Manning, but then Smith could test FA and would undoubtedly get picked up SOMEWHERE.

  5. If one of the top guards in the league is available and you are looking to revamp your OL you have to look at that option and what it may take to get him. I am not syaing pull the trigger at all cost but look into the matter to see if it could get done.

Eh, with Snee, Petrus, Boothe, Diehl, and I'm sure Baas all able to play Guard if called upon, I think we're good. Baas/Boothe at Center. Diehl, Beatty at Tackle is significantly more sketchy. So if there's revamping/improvement/strengthening to be done, I'd have to believe it'd be on the outside of the line as opposed to the inside.

  6. Gotta believe Carl Nicks is going to get paid big time this offseason by somebody. Given what we have to deal with in upcoming years with Nicks, Cruz, JPP, Tuck, Osi....I have to believe that Carl Nicks isn't even on our radar.

  7. He doesn't really need great receivers. He made Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison better. Like Eli, he'd rather have guys that run their routes and catch the ball than "me-me" superstars.

Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison were both REALLY good in their own right. Sure, Peyton makes everyone around him better, but those two guys I believe could hold their own. You want to talk about Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon, Jacob Tamme, Anthony Gonzales, and so on...I'll agree. But not Harrison and Wayne.

If I'm San Francisco, and if I have the cap space...I'm going full bore for Manning, Wayne, and Mike Wallace.

  8. Gotta agree with Jim here...for the most part...in that Miami, KC, and AZ are the top 3 in the mix. I really wouldn't eliminate SF so easily though. Granted, coach said Smith was the guy, but Smith is a free agent if I'm not mistaken and certainly, P.Manning is an upgrade. Throw a talented WR on that team in the likeness of Mike Wallace or even Mario Manningham to play with the pieces they already have....added to a talented offensive line? Don't know...but if the cap allows, SF makes sense to me.

Manning heading to the Jets or the NFC East...I believe are last resorts if for no other reason, not to overshadow Eli, which would happen, despite Eli just coming off his second SB victory.

  9. Wayne is a FA isn't he? I don't think the money was the only issue here, not by a long shot. I read an article today that raised the question, 'What if the Colts were picking #3 overall?' or 'What if Manning was signed already for a long term deal?' Either case may have led to different decisions being made by the Colts' higher-ups.

  10. The only problem is both the Skins and the Bills have pretty much entirely different coaching staffs, in the Skins case I think not a single coach/GM that was on the team with Williams is still there so the question is asked do you penalize the current coaching staff that had nothing to do with Williams?

No question the penalties would be less for Skins and Bills, but to overlook documented offenses there and to recognize documented cases in New Orleans would open themselves up to bias/favortism. If the NCAA can hammer USC after the players and coaches who were responsible for the infractions leave, then the NFL can certainly penalize a team well after the fact.

A lot depends upon the investigation itself. Was it centered around the Saints or was it centered around Williams? It's difficult to tell with the media interviewing ALL previous players under Williams. Was the original investigation with the Saints and has it now been expanded? Is the meeting today with Williams and the NFL to determine how far the NFL really needs to take the investigation?

My thoughts are that if there is documented cases of it in New Orleans, and New Orleans gets reprimanded...then the same should follow for any other team where there are documented cases.

  11. I don't understand how Woodson reconciles comments he's made saying, you got more if you knocked a guy out of the game or he was carted off, with other comments saying, there wasn't intent to injure someone. Everyone understands you want to make the big hit in football, everybody gets that football is a violent game whose participants accept a high risk of injury. But what you can't have are players making money off of putting people on a cart. Period.

No problem for making a little monetary incentive for making a big 4th down stop, a sack, forced fumble, or INT.... all that is understandable. Getting extra dough for knocking a guy out of a game? That shouldn't happen.

I think none of us want to see the game devolve into something where big hits don't have their place. The NFL has to be very careful where it's going... already, they are starting to turn into the NBA where defense is generally against the rules. Nobody wants to see a game full of penalty flags every time the QB takes a decent shot.

I think the difference a lot of players are stating is that the bounties aren't affecting their play on the field. In other words, if they have a chance to hit a guy, they're going to hit a guy. They're going to hit him just as hard whether there's a bounty or not.

But, those players who are talking now cannot speak for every player. The fact of the matter is that the coaches and players create an environment whereas some players could take it upon themselves to go for the bounty every week. A player could become that guy who tries to injure an opponent.

With bounties, the NFL would have to rule individual players' intent on any play where the opponent is injured. As we all know, intent is difficult to judge. Which, is part of the reason bounties are not acceptable and against the rules AND furthermore, why the Redskins, Bills, and Saints should all be reprimanded harshly.

  12. I'm watching what affect this has on the other teams with which Williams has been employed. If the Saints lose a #1, than I have to believe that the Redskins and Bills should face some of the same music. I believe that that will be today's meeting with Williams. How much was this prevalent in previous teams' actions/meetings. That way, Goodell can hand down punishments to all teams at the same time.

  13. Listening to Mike & Mike this morning, Golic made this sound like nothing more than an incentive laden contract. He clearly doesn't get the fact that there are things for which incentives are not appropriate. A sack, sure. A forced fumble, of course. An interception or a specified number of tackles or tackles for loss...absolutely. Causing someone to go off on a stretcher...yeah, not so much.

The point Golic was trying to make is that in his experience and to his knowledge, it didn't affect the defender's intent. The intent was to hit hard regardless, whether there was a bounty or not. I can understand that to a degree, but the bounty/bonus/incentive for causing an injury creates potential for headhunting, promotes illegal hits, and generally goes against what the league is currently trying to institute.

I guess it really doesn't matter. The Saints are going to, and rightfully so, get hammered.

  14. Oh, the Saints have most definitely fucked themselves. Granted, they have no 1st rounder this year due to Ingram trade, but I've heard that they should lose next year's 1st, this year's 2nd and/or 3rd. Added to that would be fines and suspensions.

I think that any fines levied against teams should also count against their salary cap.

Also, you have to think about how this affects Carl Nicks, Drew Brees, Marques Colston, and Robert Meachum...all free agents they'd like to resign. Knowing the sanctions and penalties coming to NO, do these guys opt to leave rather than resign?

To whomever brought up the Redskins...it's a valid point that I've not yet seen discussed by any talking heads. If they lose their 1st rounder this year and end up losing out on a franchise QB...I will laugh my silly ass off for a good solid week at the least.

  15. What are the chances if he's still available at 15, the Giants trade up to get him... Canty as good as he is.. is a bit over-priced and is putting a damper on our cap situation.

Not worth the cost of moving up 1/2 a round. If he's still there in the mid 20s, it might be a bit more realistic.
