  1. Has Goff been evaluated since his injury? Strange that he still hasn't resigned.

Last I saw he was told to test the market which leads me to believe there was some level of disagreement in contract amounts.

If he's not signed, there would obviously need to be a draft pick spent on a LB.

My bigger surprise is the general lack of interest in Jacobs. Sure, he wasn't phenomenal, but he's certainly a good enough role player to garner some interest I'd think.

  2. I don't think you're looking at the TE position quite the same way the Giant's staff does. Ballard was just as dangerous receiving as Boss, perhaps moreso. What he lacks is blocking ability. Even Bennett is known to be a decent blocker, which is probably a big reason we signed him.

Whichever TE we draft is probably going to be at least as good a blocker as he is a receiver. That's probably a big reason why Beckum hasn't played as much as we expected (well, that and he sucks). I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't draft TE until the later rounds, especially with a FA on hand.

If Fleener's gone when we pick, I would agree with waiting to draft a TE. But I'm with Jim on this one. We need to draft a TE and RB in the top 3 rounds.

  3. I'd love to bring him in for a looksee if there was any chance that we could afford him. Given our cap situation, I think we're out in the cold.

If we're telling Goff to test the market and then come back to us, after he was injured all year, then I just don't see our making this kind of move. Would I like it, oh yeah. Will it happen, oh no.

  4. I like your top two choices but I've seen video of Pierce and I'm not sure he'll be any better than D.J. Ware. I love your selection of Wright, though. Quick feet, really fast, seems like a player that would thrive under Eli, and was a consistent performer at Arkansas.

I've basically just read brief bios, others' opinions, and looked at draft projections. Pierce seemed to perform at that combine amongst the top 5 or 7 RBs fairly consistently. I figured that if he was around at the bottom of the 3rd, there would be some value there. Now, I don't put all my stock in strictly combine results, but I honestly haven't had the time to go on to watching film clips. If there's a better RB than Pierce at the bottom of the 3rd, than I'd be okay with that too.

On Wright, I may be stretching a bit on that one. I think he's a 4th rounder, but he could easily be a mid to high 4th rounder.

Cruz is our slot guy in 3 WR sets.

I think Reese wants an outside guy. Hixon, Thomas and Barden are outside guys while JJ is a slot guy.

I'm not saying we must draft a WR. I'm just saying if a guy like Steven Hill is there, we better take him.

This is where I differ from the Giants and from many on SW. I would draft need in the first few rounds and BPA in later rounds. I simply don't see a 3rd WR as much of a need as a starting TE.

  6. At this point, we NEED a RB and we NEED a TE. Though I don't totally agree with BPA approach (I'm more of a hybrid...draft for needs in early rounds 1-3, then BPA in later rounds), I think the Giants front office do. That said, if you can fill a need AND draft BPA, then you're doing well on draft day.

If we draft Fleener on draft day at 32, he could easily be the BPA at that spot AND fill a need for us. I think this is proven by the fact that despite the Marcellus Bennet signing, most mocks are still pegging us with Fleener.

Add to that, the fact that the value of RBs continue to fall. Not that you don't need them, but considering the league continues to be more pass-happy AND the fact that RBs don't last as long as other positions due to the abuse they take...the position has just lost value. For that reason, I don't see a #1 being used for RB. I think we could easily snag a RB with our #2.

As for the WR, I think we could answer the loss of Manningham with either a guy we already have, just as we did with Cruz OR we could get a vet and damn near minimum to step in. Either way, I don't see a draft pick spent here unless it's much later rounds.

As for being okay with the O line as is, I think we need to find an OT at some point. Diehl has been around for quite some time and he's been more valueable than many give him credit for. His flexibility has gotten us out of more than one sticky situation. I think he'll be fine at RT in a competition with Brewer. Bottom line is that we have starters across the board, but depth on the interior is much, much deeper than depth on the outside.

  7. I too think a HEALTHY Hixon or Thomas would be sufficient as a 3rd WR. The problem is that to me, they equate to outside guys and would almost force Cruz into the slot in 3WR sets. Putting all 3 on one side would be an interesting formation though. But anyhow, in my mind, I think the 3rd WR is the intermediate, possession type receiver. That's just kinda how I envision them. I think that Cruz was that guy at first, and blossomed into the guy his is now. I think Smith was that guy and could step into that role again if called upon.

A TE and 3rd WR in a general sense, pull the coverage into the middle of the field, opening up the outside. Classic example was the pre-Shockey Giants. Had good WRs, but they got immensely better once Shockey drew coverage. I'm not a stat guy, but it'd be interesting to see how well our WRs did in games where the TE was involved early. Might be tough to dig that one up, though.

  8. I doubt Tebow goes to Jacksonville for the fact that they have Gabbert and Henne to battle for the starting spot, with the loser going to the backup role.

Right now, Tebow, Alex Smith, Tannehill (draft pick) and even David Garrard are the QBs who are being mentioned. Cleveland, Miami, and San Francisco are destinations that need a starting QB this year.

Miami may still have a shot at Tannehill in the draft.

Cleveland obviously has a shot at Tannehill, but to use their first, first rounder on him would be too high.

San Francisco would obviously be best off re-signing Alex Smith, and to be honest, he'd probably be best off signing back there. That said, we'll see how much of the bridge has been burned by their persuing Peyton.

  9. If manning goes to Denver and Alex smith signs with Miami, who is San Francisco's QB next season, Trent Dilfer?

Kaepernick or something like that would be my guess...that is unless they pick up the soon to be traded Tim Tebow.

  10. I think Peyton would like to stay out of the NFC for the reasons stated, that he doesn't want direct competition against Eli and in hopes for a Manning/Manning SB. That said, I think a Manning/Manning NFC Championship would be good enough and that chances of a superbowl, period, trumps chances of a superbowl against his brother.

The 49ers snuck in here because they were a very talented team that was lacking quality WRs and a quality QB. Arguably the best QB to play the game over the past however many years became available. I've been asking all along why the 49ers weren't in the mix. Turns out they were.

  11. I think by the time Osi hits free agency, no one in their right mind, besides the Bills again maybe, would pay Osi anymore than a fraction of Mario Williams got.

Williams is a complete player. Osi is just a pass rushing specialist

And really a 1-move one at that...we all know Osi wants the big deal, but sitting, waiting, might cause him to check his ego a bit.

  12. So Manningham goes to be the #3 behind Crabtree and Moss...good for him. He may push both Moss and Crabtree for the #2, but he was doing the same with Cruz here. Add to that the fact that he's got a piece of shit QB throwing to him.

The grass is not always greener, but I guess the cash might be.

  13. To be honest, I was torn on the RB position before Jacob's departure. Now, we have a hole to fill for sure. I think that the front office likes to fill holes in FA, thereby giving them the flexibility to take BPA in the draft. So, I really think that the Giants should look at a guy like Tolbert first, so long as he comes in relatively cheap...which probably won't happen.

I'm not sold at all on Ware. I trust the Giants coaching staff enough to be fine with him as a depth guy, and as a 3rd RB, I wasn't bitching. But I don't have the confidence in him at all to move him up to #2. I just don't see enough production out of him when he does get his chances.

Scott - just hasn't gotten enough opportunities. Granted, he's put the ball on the turf a few times in the chance he has gotten, but for all we know, that was first chance, first NFL game jitters. I don't want him going anywhere before he gets one more chance.

At the end of the day, I think we draft a RB. A few weeks ago when I first looked at draft picks, Bernard Pierce intrigued me as a 3rd round guy. That was pre-combine though and I'm not certain where he's now projected. Doug Martin was also a guy who caught my eye, but he was more a 2nd round guy at that time.

I still don't think we go RB in the first. I think TE or OLine depth is the way to go. CB/S might not be the worst either.
