  1. I vote option 1. I wanna repeat this year and Osi is a big help at doing that. Especially contract year money hungry Osi.

But you bring a goodpoint that we can rollover that cap room for next year. However you gotta think Reese will burn through most of that $4 mill before the season on rookies and vets.

Reese will have to pay the rookies regardless of what happens to Osi. And I really don't think Osi's staying or going will ultimately be a salary cap issue. If the Giants wanted to pay him, I think they'd clear the space to do so. It's a disagreement of worth issue.

I really think, that if the Giants get one of the best pass rushers in the draft (as they have them ranked), that Osi could be traded overnight/tomorrow if they found someone willing to give up a 3rd this year or a 2nd next. Two 4ths would work as well for me. Giants would be protecting themselves AND getting a better return on a player that they're going to lose eventually anyhow.

  2. What you guys need to understand is that Reese has all the leverage.

If he doesn't get a deal he likes guess what??

Osi has to play 100% for us. He wants money, and that's the only way he will get it. So when he puts up 12 sacks or 6FF this year and gets $20 million on the market we then receive our 4th round comp and call it a day.

    I would be greatly disappointed if he's traded for a 3rd. A 2nd I'd sign off on. 2nd and a 5th would be good.

Osi makes just $4 mill so it's cheap for a pass rusher. He will help us repeat.

Yes, for THIS year, the Giants have all the leverage. I really don't believe anyone's debating that. The discussion revolves around what you do with him as a player. There's really not that many options.

    1. Let him play out this year, do not give him an extension, he walks out in FA next offseason and you pick up a compensatory pick in 2014.

    2. Trade him for a 3rd this year or 2nd next year, unload his salary, carrying it over to next year so that we can pay Nicks and/or Cruz.

For the Giants organization, in option one, you get Osi's services for 1 more year and you get a compensatory pick down the road. In option 2, you get draft pick(s) this and/or next year AND you get some salary cap space.

I'm voting for #2 at this point. The 2014 compensatory pick isn't worth much today and I think that his production can be absorbed. The benefits to option 2 really just seem to outweigh those of #1.

  3. If Tannehill drops to us at 32, I think it's all but a certainty that our pick goes up on the auction block. I think he makes too much sense for Miami, which is precisely why I think Miami may go a different direction.

But falling from 8 to 32 is quite a long way and again, with the Patriots having 27 and 31, they'll have two chances to do the same trade down that we would entertain.

  4. my final guess for tonight is either d-lineman or wr. with a distinct trade-down possibility.

I am thinking about this more and more, especially if only 3 QBs go in Luck, RG3, Tannehill....and Tannehill goes #8 to the Dolphins...I think there'd be quite a few teams ready to move up from the 2nd to grab the 4th QB, whomever that may be...problem is, with NE having two picks at the end of the first, both of which come before us, they'd be better suited to trade down on one of those picks.

  5. Why doesn't he get respect? Because he shows up to the combine completely unprepared and gives an overwhelmingly underwhelming performance. He follows that up with poor interviews league-wide and follows that up with a failed drug test, that newsflash, he knew he was going to take. He doesn't smoke pot anymore...um, how long does it stay in your system...I'm not sure, but I don't know that pot stays in your system long enough to be definitive about not doing it anymore.

Look, it seems now like he's trying to say the right things, but he's coming across like an arrogant, my shit don't stink, kinda guy...not the humble, though successful guys that are being recognized.

The guy needs to be knocked down a few pegs and he needs to accept his mistakes. He needs a huge attitude adjustment. That said, he has some talent that shouldn't go unrecognized. He's worth drafting still, but only into a system where there is clear leadership and lots of accountability and where the defense is willing to take a chance on the guy. I don't consider that the Giants unless it's 6th or 7th round...maybe they use one of the two 4ths on the guy, I don't know.

But the player has only hurt himself here....and the fact that he's blaming Mayock...only goes to show that he's still not being accountable or humble and that he hasn't really learned from his mistakes pre-, during, and post-combine.

  6. A 3rd this year is worth more than a 3rd next year. And that's not considering the compensatory 3rd we would likely receive for Osi would really be an early 4th rounder (after the last pick of the 3rd round).

So a 3rd rounder might not be out of the question, although I wouldn't do it unless it was an early 3rd.

That's why I suggested a 2nd this year or a 3rd next year for the trade.

If you're relying on compensatory picks, we have to consider a few things. One, I believe they're awarded based on overall gains/losses for a given team in a given offseason. So, if we do let Osi walk, but pick up a veteran FA at a different position...the compensatory pick we'd receive would be lowered and not necessarily be a late 3rd or early 4th. The second consideration, is that the compensatory pick would not be received until the 2014 draft given we wouldn't lose Osi until the 2013 offseason.

So, the value of a 2014 compensatory pick, at the late 3rd/early 4th needs to be weighed against the value of a 3rd this year and against a 2nd next year. Looking at it this way, I'm in favor of working out the trade now, but given the publicity of Osi's deal, teams might simply be expecting the Giants to let him walk next year, thereby making a willing trade partner difficult to find.

  7. Why not... A kicker can make or break a game. It's not like we signed David Akers when we had a chance. Instead we're left with Ulcer-Tynes.

While they can make or break a game, they're also to be had as undrafted free agents. I would not be opposed to bringing in some competition in camp, but not at the cost of losing a draft pick.

  8. I would hope that being violent is worse than recreational drug use. Anyway I think being caught at the combine with drugs in your system should be a major red flag. If you can't get your shit together for the major interview of your life then you more than likely don't have the necessary work ethic for the NFL. Also they know there is a drug test which just makes it that much worse. Stupidity is not curable.

I really don't even know that stupidity is the right word. It's just a lack of consequences. He knows he'll still be drafted and still make a shit ton of money. He probably cares less about the difference in money, because at the end of the day, he's still going to be far richer than me, presumably you, presumably all of his high school teammates, presumably all of his high school coaches, etc. He'll still get a big house, drive a fancy car, and will probably be broke when his playing career is over.

I wish it was as simple as informing them of their mistake, but like I mentioned earlier, I think it's more of a cultural, societal, systematic type issue.

I agree though, it's fucking ridiculous that someone would do something illegal, knowing full well they'll be tested for it.

  9. During play, I don't see this being that much of an advantage to the opposing coaches. But the kicker is the halftime stuff, or the injury stuff...is the opposing QB coming back into the game or not...that kinda thing. One has to ask though, that if the GM's box was wired, why couldn't the coaches headsets be wired?

The NFL is going to have to launch an investigation into this now, which I'm sure will just piss off Goodell that much more. Shefter brought up a good point on Mike/Mike this morning...saying that when the NFL was talking to Loomis and the Saints about the bounties, they had to have asked if there was anything additional they needed to report or come clean over. Shefter also reported that the NFL did not have knowledge of this before yesterday. So...if the NFL did ask the Saints if there was anything further, and if the NFL didn't have prior knowledge, I think it's safe to assume that the Saints lied again, directly to Goodell. Sure, there's some speculation there, but it's certainly not a far leap.

The legal ramifications, from a state and federal perspective, are moot as the statute of limitations has passed...assuming the thing was in fact disconnected when they said it was. But, I'm hearing there's a civil side of this too, where every individual that was recorded, or where the Saints had the ability to record them, could potentially file a civil suit...could be real ugly for a real long time if you think about all the players, all the coaches, and all the staff in general that Loomis may have eavesdropped upon without their knowledge. One has to think that the NFL doesn't want 1,000 lawsuits lined up against the Saints.

  10. Went to the draft day party years ago at the old stadium. Met O'Hara in person as he was just walking around the concourse, probably to/from a workout. Stood in line too, to shake hands with Harry Carson. Got autographs from Gibril Wilson, Shiancoe, Tyree, Suebert...toured the locker room/press box/walked on the field

Had an absolute blast, and would love to do that again at the new stadium. However, I don't the Giants putting on such a big show like that now that the draft is split over 3 days instead of two. When it was just Saturday/Sunday...they could plan a day's worth of stuff on Saturday. Now, I suppose they could still do a day's worth of stuff leading up to the first round on Thursday, but that's still a Thursday.

I'd consider changing it to rounds 1-2 on Saturday, 3-5 on Sunday, and 6-7 on Monday night.

  11. There's a lot that I agree with in your mock but history says that the top pass rushers in this draft will go before the 13th pick. And no Mercilus in the first I think is improbable. For me Mercilus, after Melvin Ingram and maybe Coples (who could probably play in either system), is the best 3-4 pass rusher in this draft.

Nice job. I'm also surprised you still have Kendall Wright going in the first round, though.

And if Perry is still there for us we should be very happy. I think that's a pipe dream, though.

I'll be honest, I was blowing off the later part of my Friday at work and rushed the last 5 or 6 picks so I could leave the office. Having gone through and actually mocking the first round, I did come to realize that the draft is rather deep at DLine players. Whether it be the pass rushing DEs or the stout, run stuffing with some penetration DTs...there are a bunch of them. Add to that, the fact that the top 8 teams have players falling to them in spots where they're desparately needed...and I think some of the DEs or DTs will end up falling, despite they're first round grades. For my mock, it happened to be Mercilus. Could be Perry...could be Jones...etc.

As for Kendall Wright to the Patriots...again, I think trading out of that pick into the second so someone could grab Tannehill is the way the Patriots should go. I really do. But having to mock someone there, and giving them a DE a few spots earlier...and the 1st round DBs gone...I suppose I could see LB depth too with Lavonte David for them...but I think that Welker needs help beyond what they have on the roster currently.

We'll see though...I'm just excited to see what players we end up getting. Always nice to welcome new Giants.

  12. Like I said Perry would be the best DE available next year, if he went back to USC, so I wouldn't mind. Overall, this is a good job.

Thanks...instead of learning for a year at USC...he learns for a year behind Tuck, Osi, JPP...I'm okay with that.

  13. Since I commented on most others, I thought it be only fair to take the criticism on mine...

    1. Colts - QB, Luck -- well hell, if I got this one wrong at this point, with the news that came out this week that he WILL be the pick...well, you'd just have to stop reading here.

    2. Redskins - QB, Griffen III -- they traded a lot to get to this spot for a reason and RGIII did not visit the Colts for a reason.

    3. Vikings - OT, Kalil -- some of their biggest pieces on the team rely on blocking...Ponder, Peterson, and even Harvin. Have to believe later rounds will be filled with defense and a WR.

    4. Browns - RB, Richardson -- I think they'd love an OT and would shit a golden brick if the Vikings didn't take Kalil. Keeping McCoy upright will go a long way for his development. But so too, will the ability to run the ball.

    5. Buccaneers - CB, Claiborne -- Ronde Barber is old, Aqib Talib is working his way towards suspension or jail time or both. They need some help in the secondary.

    6. Rams - WR, Blackmon -- They'll be in need of a backup RB in this draft, but there's value later for that. Some secondary help would be nice as well, but giving Bradford a weapon will not only help Bradford, but will take some pressure off Stephen Jackson and the running game as well.

    7. Jaguars - DT, Cox -- they lost a starting DT this offseason, Cox is the highest ranked DT in the draft. A DE could easily be the pick here as well, but bottom line, the DLine needs help and the Jags don't have the ability to draft for BPA at this point...they need a DT.

    8. Dolphins - WR, Floyd -- this team has created holes this offseason rather than filled the holes they already had. Replacing Marshall with Floyd will help. I have pushed, and argued as recently as earlier today, that they should go QB. However, regardless of their draft, I fully expect them to pick higher than 8th next year, which should give them a shot at some of the top QBs in next year's draft, which seemingly, are higher ranked than Tannehill.

    9. Panthers - DT, Poe -- they need help on the DLine pretty much across the board. I give them Poe here simply because he's a bit shorter and stouter than Brockers. I think the 6'6 Brockers is too tall and could lose leverage against the OG and C of the league. I like the fact that Poe more than doubled Brockers' reps at 225 lbs.

    10. Bills - OT, Reiff -- they're ecstatic the 2nd highest OT falls to them without really any question. I think the Dolphins could have considered Reiff, but Miami has bigger fish to fry. Defense was upgraded in a big way via free agency. Secondary upgrades will be needed in later rounds of the draft.

    11. Chiefs - DT, Brockers -- they need help in the front 7 on defense. Brockers and Keuchly are both close here for the Chiefs with the edge going to Brockers.

    12. Seahawks - LB, Keuchly -- they would have been happy with whomever the Chiefs didn't pick between Brockers and Keuchly, but are happier that it's Keuchly given the glaring need for them.

    13. Cardinals - DE, Coples -- has played inside and outside on the DLine and gives the Cardinals some serious depth with Docket and Calais

    14. Cowboys - S, Barron -- they need secondary help, big time, in an ever-passing-friendly league. It's really no secret.

    15. Eagles - DE, Ingram -- the Eagles have depth across the DLine already. But, with Barron and Keuchly both off the board, the Eagles take the best player available. Ideally, if this is who they're left with, I believe they'd try to trade down

    16. Jets - OG, DeCastro -- they're looking to start running the ball more frequently, a plan that got them to two consecutive AFC championships before last year. Running the ball takes pressure off Sanchez/Tebow. A WR here wouldn't be a bad idea either, but they're to be had in later rounds.

    17. Bengals - CB, Gilmore -- they add to Jones, Hall, and Clements. They'd address DLine here if there weren't still some serious talent there and they didn't have a pick coming up at 21.

    18. Chargers - CB, Kirkpatrick -- Chargers improve on the waning talents of Jammer and Cason, and adds to an improving Weddle

    19. Bears - OT, Glenn -- The Bears OLine is inconsistent and needs to have a steady, solid player. Glenn gives that to them at a variety of positions given Glenn's ability to play OG or OT. A revamped OLine will keep Cutler clean to throw to Marshall while clearing holes for Bush and Forte.

    20. Titans - LB, Hightower -- while he may open the season as a backup, he'll push the starters for the starting position. This could give the Titans one of the more formidable LB cores. I could envision Kendall Wright, the Baylor WR going here as well, but I lean towards Hightower.

    21. Bengals - DE, Jones -- they address their DLine at this point with one of the more athletic DEs in the draft.

    22. Browns - OT, Martin -- they don't get Kalil early, but they do follow it up with a solid 1st round prospect in Martin. Blocking for Richardson and keeping McCoy clean will go a long way for that offense.

    23. Lions - CB, Jenkins -- they've lost Eric Wright in the offseason in an area where they were already struggling. While they'd love a solid RB, getting one here would be a huge reach. A complement to Calvin Johnson would be the sexy pick given Hill and Wright are on the board, but the holes are all through the secondary and Johnson does pretty well with those that are already there.

    24. Steelers - DT, Worthy -- there are depth issues across the DLine in Pittsburgh that could be covered by shifting some current guys around, but that leaves them awfully thin in the case of injury.

    25. Broncos - WR, Hill -- Peyton gets a new toy. I really thought about Tannehill here, despite Peyton's signing. I believe the Broncos should learn from the Colts in that life after Peyton isn't always easy, but a backup QB to develop over 3 years could be had later.

    26. Texans - LB, McClellin -- With Williams and Ryans both gone, depth should be addressed. McClellin is no slouch and could push for playing time.

    27. Patriots - DE, Upshaw -- Patriots have lost two super bowls to the Giants, primarily due to their pass rush. Patriots get a little pass rush of their own.

    28. Packers - DE, Branch -- Packers upgrade a position that was not as good as it should have been. Overall defense was decent, but the DE position was lacking at times.

    29. Ravens - S, Smith -- Ed Reed isn't getting any younger. Their defense is getting rather old in general and it's high time to inflect a little youth.

    30. 49ers - TE, Fleener -- the more I've heard this suggested, the more I like it. Their defense played really well last year. The one issue agreed upon is their passing offense. Fleener only adds to the creativity there.

    31. Patriots - WR, Wright -- I like DB and RB here more than WR, so much so that I think they'd trade back out of this pick, possibly to a team looking for Tannehill. But, given it's a mock and I have to go with who's available, I think they attempt to complement Welker. Wright is a good target and provides Brady with another weapon.

    32. Giants - DE, Perry -- can't have too many pass rushers...lol. He's best player available, gives us flexibility on the Osi front (and possibly the Kiwi front next year). It could even allow us to trade Osi.
