  1. If he never plays a down, he's got no complaints. He walked away with his signing bonus, and his medical expenses paid. He walked away--does that even happen without the Giants covering his medical bills?

It would be a fantastic story if he made it all the way back, but as it is, it's a pretty good tale.

This. I was rooting for him to make it back to the field. Just a damn shame...you still gotta feel bad for the guy despite what he does have going for him.

  2. STs is going to be key, and Barden has shown nothing there either. I just don't see how he'll suit up over Hixon, Jernigan or Randel come week 1.

keep in mind Randle hasn't shown anything on ST either...at the NFL level anyhow...but you're right in that the 5th and 6th WR will be largely involved in ST.

Another consideration is how many you can carry on the roster vs. how many you can suit up on Sunday. Not so sure that number is the same.

  3. Obviously. We have at least 10 WR's in camp with at least 4 that are pre-ordained to make the team and that leaves 6 WR's fighting for maybe 1 spot on the team (the best of the bunch for special teams - ala, Tyree) and maybe 1 spot on the practice squad.

That's a great, great problem to have.

I love competition for training camp too. Nicks/Cruz/Randle/Hixon/Barden/Jernigan I have to believe are definites. I find it difficult to carry many more than 6 at the position.

RB is going to be the same. I don't see carrying any more than 4 tops..thinking it'd be 3 if it weren't for Bradshaw's feet. Bradshaw/Wilson/Scott/Ware...leaves Brown out

  4. I am really hoping for Chad Jones. The article was poorly written and I don't put much stock in it as a result.

Jones injury nearly cost him his leg and quite a few reports stated that he'd never walk again. Doesn't get much more serious than that. The fact that he's walking/running again is miraculous in and of itself and I really think all would/should be impressed with just that. Jones has about a year or two left on his deal and if he doesn't get back to being fully healthy and able to clear the medical hurdles...than I think we move on. Hats off to the Giants though for keeping him on the roster and giving him the opportunity.

  5. They also added Brandon Collins to the WR competition this past weekend.

Scout.com had him down as a 6th or 7th round pick. He's been in trouble with the law and was kicked off the Texas Longhorns' team, but has some good numbers. 40 times were 4.37 (low) / 4.40 (high)....5'11", 187lbs.

Great to have a ton of competition at a spot that is already stocked.

Practice squad/camp fodder...I don't see him making the cut. His off the field issues did not seem to be minor by any means. It's not like he got caught with pot just once and can blame it on experimentation/youth/peer pressure. He had big time legal issues from what I read.

  6. I think Hixon enters camp as #3 with Barden at #4. That's entering camp. I don't doubt for a second that Randall and Jernigan will get their shots.

    Nicks - Cruz - Hixon - Barden - Jernigan - Randall

The rook will have to earn his way up the depth chart. I don't think Randall will have a problem passing Jernigan and even Barden by the first couple games. Hixon/Randall WR competition may depend upon the KR/PR competition.

  7. Yeah, there's no way they are taking those cap hits. And there's no reason to given that he's a good player and we don't have anyone proven that can play his position.

Not this offseason...but I think there's potential for a contract restructure next year....especially if Sash or Jones prove to be more than backup players.

  8. It's just not that simple.

Antrel Rolle Defensive Back 3/5/2010: Signed a five-year, $37 million contract. The deal contains $15 million guaranteed, including a $5 million signing bonus and Rolle's first two years' base salaries. Rolle also is eligible for annual $250,000 workout bonuses. Another $100,000 is available yearly in Pro Bowl incentives. 2011: $1.25 million (+ $4 million "signing" bonus), 2012: $6.75 million, 2013-2014: $7 million, 2015: Free Agent

I don't think he's getting $9 million... but either way, you cut him, with 3 seasons left on that contract, you still take a cap hit, plus he's a good player. I think people are spoiled right now, they can't remember CC Brown or something. There's a bias against defensive backs in general, I believe, where people more easily remember the bad plays than the good ones, which are many times benign plays like an incomplete pass.

It's like when I was in the Army, working on radios... you don't ever get credit when things are running as they should, but you get a shit storm when there's problems. It's just how it works.

But Rolle is a good player, overpaid, yes. But he's also a pretty important piece to that defense.

No doubt that Rolle is a valuable piece to the defense, but if Sash or Jones can take his place...it makes him expendable should he be unwilling to rework his deal.

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-giants/antrel-rolle/

Cutting pre-June 1st = take a 7.05 million hit this year, but save 6.75 million base this year = net loss this season of 300K

Cutting after June 1st = take a 2.35 million hit this year, but save 6.75 million base this year = 4.4 savings this year...but also take a 4.7 million hit next year

Cutting pre-June 1st next offseason = 9.1 million hit this year, take a 4.7 million hit next year, save his 7 million salary next year creating a 2.3 million savings next year

Cutting post-June 1st next offseason = 9.1 million hit this year, take a 2.35 million hit next year, save his 7 million salary next year creating a 4.65 million savings next year...but also taking a hit of 2.35 the following year.

I'm not projecting this any further.

  9. Holy shit. There's huge pressue on TT to play well this year with a $6 million roster bonus due next year. If Prince pans out I don't know how Reese could justify keeping him at that price.

Do roster bonuses get prorated for salary cap purposes, or is that only for signing bonuses? If that $6 mil gets prorated over the remaining 3 years of his deal, I think that $2 mil per isn't too bad to stomach.

Furthermore, if Sash continues to develop or if Chad Jones shows he's ready to take on a bigger role...it gives the Giants some leverage in restructuring Rolle's contract, given he's among the higher paid players on our team. If we restructure Rolle's deal, it'll provide much needed flexibility cap-wise.

  10. then they better make this trade pretty damn soon, 3-4 Terrell Suggs and 4-3 DE Osi Umenyiora are two totally different positions.

I know and I'm only reiterating what I read. I think Osi would have an adjustment to make and not quite sure he could do it. I don't know if one of their current DEs would be able to take Suggs spot, allowing Osi to take the DE's. But fitting Osi into their system would be their problem. If Baltimore is truly interested, which I've seen nothing substantiated I might add, then I would hope the Giants would pull the trigger for a 2nd rounder or a 3rd rounder/player deal.

  11. looking at this from the Ravens perspective, how does this trade make any more sense for them?? Osi does not play Terrell Suggs position.

And they JUST drafted Courtney Upshaw.

    Retarded article.

Courtney Upshaw is a rookie who hasn't proven anything yet, but would get playing time regardless.

Suggs was primarily a rush the QB guy regardless of his position, which is pretty much what they'd ask Osi to do. Not sure if they'd stand Osi up though....but maybe.

  12. We have 3 options:

    1. Extension so he can retire a Giant - I really think that if this was going to happen, it would've happened already. A few things: Osi looks at his value as it would be to ANY team leaguewide whereas the Giants look at his value to the GIANTS. Whereas Osi sees himself as a dominant DE (he can be), the Giants view him as the 3rd best DE on the Giants (he is). So, the difference in perceived value, the history to date of not getting an extension done, plus the drafting of JPP/extending of Kiwi...all lead me to believe this isn't the way the Giants will go.

    2. Let him walk after 2012 season - the benefits here are simple. We get his production for this season and we get a 2014 compensatory pick. The bad, that compensatory pick could be buoyed by other gains/losses next offseason. It'd be a tail end of the 4th round AT BEST return for letting him walk. His production this season would be the bigger of the two benefits by far for keeping him this season. One has to take into account his injuries and the his distractions, that I'm sure won't cease until the end of the season or until he signs elsewhere. While the Giants have good leaders and a seemingly solid locker room, I don't know that allowing this to continue and fester will be such a great idea.

    3. Trade him now. The benefits - we get a draft pick in 2013 as opposed to 2014. The draft pick would also be in an earlier round. We'd also eliminate any potential distraction and we wouldn't set any sort of precedent for paying the player who bitches publicly about their deal. The cons, our benefit would be delayed AND we'd lose out on his production this season.

I think at the end of the day, we should trade him IF the price is right. The obvious question is how much, in terms of draft picks, his expected production this season is worth. The article I read this morning mentioned that the price last year was a 1st rounder. The price this year should be no less than a 2nd. I'd actually prefer a 3rd + player option. The player we'd pick up would be a DE from the team we'd trade Osi to. With Tuck and JPP drawing double coverages, the DE we'd pick up need not be even as good as Osi was and still would be successful.

If we still had Tolly, I'd trade without requesting a player in return.

  13. I won't buy a jersey for a player until (1) they're retired and (2) they're known primarily for the contributions to the Giants.

Have Bavaro and LT authentics at home. Would like an Eli jersey at some point. Maybe a Pierre-Paul jersey...but again, not until they hang up the cleats and retire as Giants.

  14. Demeco Ryans really didn't do a whole lot last year, maybe he's better in a 4-3 and just didn't adapt to the 3-4 well, I don't know. But don't forget, they only had Mario Williams for 5 games last season. They were 3-2 with him, 7-4 without him. They are high on Brooks Reed, who did well at times for them as a rookie, and have Connor Barwin who had a great season last year, and getting back Brian Cushing. Plus year 2 of JJ Watt, I think they are ok in that front seven provided they keep these guys healthy. And don't forget they drafted Whitney Mercilus to step in as an edge rusher as well, and I think he's a player.

I really don't think they'll drop off dramatically by any means and still think they'll take the division, but they may have some readjusting to do that could cause an issue or two here or there that could end up costing them a game or two or even a playoff game maybe. Don't know.

  15. Houston - losing Mario Williams and Demeco Ryans will hurt them I think more than they might realize now. Still, they're the class of that division.

Baltimore - still has the hand up in their division. As old as their defense is getting, Steelers defense has gotten older. Baltimore still leads the Steelers, but depending upon how their offseason comings/goings work out...will determine that division. Watch out for Cincinatti too at some point. They've seemingly gotten some true players there that once they start to gel, they could be very good for a long time.

  16. Yeah, it's no question that Vilma was going to get the worst of it, but I didn't think he'd get a full season. I figured on him getting the 8 games and lessening degrees of suspension down the line.

As for the other players, if they're known to have taken part in it, I can't say why they wouldn't be charged just the same. Sure, the ringleaders will get the harshest penalty but those following the ringleader should at least get something

  17. Now this guy.... I can't understand why he didn't get drafted. Over 6' tall, 100+ catches in college, plus NFL-level gym numbers? Seems like an obvious mid round pick, not somebody that is short or slow and would therefore get disregarded by NFL scouts. Makes me think there's something we're missing here...

    Exactly
