Reinforcements on the way to bolster giants defense
mastershake replied to mastershake's topic in New York Giants
Yes, but I expect we'll cut Zeitler, Tate, Solder, and a few others, which should get us $20-25mm in additional cap space. -

We are going to need a veteran interior lineman to play alongside Lemuiex and Gates (Hernandez is a bust). Zeitler's contract is way too big and he's not playing at a level that warrants a $14mm cap hit. Besides that, we probably only have cap space for two other big free agents, so any two out of WR, Edge, or CB works for me. These are the right priorities after OL in my view. We should make sure to re-sign Ryan if we can for under $8mm and Peppers (Peppers on his 5th year, $6mm option). Keep the veteran presence; it has made a difference. We'll also have to re-sign either Tomlinson or Williams if we can, otherwise DL will be a hole. Assuming our draft is #8-14 ish, I like CB Jaycee Horn out of South Carolina, Joe Horn's son. -

We'll see. The giants sometimes have a knack for turning 3rd string QBs into Joe Montana. Or at least, they can rack up yards against us, like Alex Smith did a few weeks ago, and we barely hung on in that game. -

Definitely. I'm just pointing out he seemed better in the box than playing deep. And since nickel/dime is employed something like 50%+ of the time, he definitely has a role. -
Reinforcements on the way to bolster giants defense
mastershake replied to mastershake's topic in New York Giants
From what I watched, I saw a guy who played well as a box safety or a nickel backer cover guy who could match up with TEs and RBs. I didn't see a guy who'd be proficient as a two deep or one deep safety who needed to go sideline to sideline or come up the field quick. He could be a versatile chess piece on the defense, but he'll likely need to be supplemented with two other safeties, though this seems common in today's NFL. Better against the run than in coverage. Better attacking than when asked to sit back. -
Reinforcements on the way to bolster giants defense

Everyone keeps talking up McKinney...I must be missing something when I watched Alabama games last year because I always thought he was kinda meh...showed up once in awhile, but he also disappeared for long stretches of the game and was sort of the play who racked up tackles AFTER the guy already caught the ball 5-10 yards down the field. -
How the hell is he and Ereck Flowers still in the league, lol. Granted, Flowers abilities might best be suited where Miami has him at G, where he can just maul people in the run game, and where you minimize his responsibilities with fast rushers off the edge in the pass game, and it looks like he's doing okay there.

Bradberry and Gano. Martinez, Lawrence and Williams have been good, but I don't think they're pro bowl level.

Plus like the mention of Gallman. Always liked him. He's a tough, decisive runner, plays bigger than his size. We need to feed him the ball more.

All charges against DeAndre Baker being dropped
mastershake replied to Mr. P's topic in New York Giants
Would he really want to come back here after the giants organization gave his accusers the benefit of the doubt, even if we offered him an okay deal? Surely there will be other suitors, right? -
Finally this team plays a complete game where they're not hanging on for dear life.

If we somehow end up with 2 successful starting OL in this draft out of the 3 draft picks, Getty might not look so bad after all. Problem is we don't have a capable starting OL right now.
-
Let's assume for a second that we aren't in a position to draft Trevor Lawrence...who really after that is left that you can really bank on rebuilding around? Here are the potential 1st round prospects: - Justin Fields, Ohio State - Trey Lance, ND State That's pretty much it. Would we really abandon DJ for one of these two? I'm not sure that's a good idea. One idea I'd be open to is if the Texans get Trevor Lawrence, trading a 3rd rounder or so for Deshaun Watson.

I'm not ready to give up on him. Not until we have a competent, capable starting offensive line. One that doesn't have the play calling running conservative/scared, and one that doesn't have a QB scrambling for his life half the time, plus one where we have a functioning, consistent running game. Now yes, if Lawrence is there and we are there, you take him. If not, forget it. There's no other "can't miss" QB's in this draft. Any other QB draft pick will be just as uncertain, just as much of a question mark as DJ.

Yesterday is definitely on Daniel Jones, and to a lesser extent the OL. We should have won that game.
-
Let's not forget that tonight, our OL faces Suh, JPP, Shaw Barrett, and Steve McClendon, not to mention Lavonte David and Devin White. It's the #6 defense in the league. The giants OL is going to get murdered tonight.

Go home Will Hernandez. You're drunk. Let's see what Shane Lemieux can do.
