The New York Giants might have a replacement for safety Stevie Brown, who is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Kenny Phillips, a 41-game starter for the Giants from 2008-12, was released by the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, a source told about the move confirms to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The transaction was first reported by ProFootballTalk.

A Pro-Bowl caliber safety early in his career, Phillips has lost a few steps due to chronic knee injuries. He missed the Eagles' past two preseason games with a quadriceps issue.

With no money guaranteed on an incentive-laden one-year contract, the Eagles opted to cut ties. It's a telling move considering the struggles of safeties Pat Chung, Nate Allen and rookie Earl Wolff in preseason action.

The Giants did attempt to re-sign Phillips before the start of free agency. The money wasn't right, likely because the team had Brown ready to take over, and Phillips wanted to gauge his market value.

The major hurdle to a reunion is Phillips' ability to pass a physical.

Should we bring him in for a physical?

He knows the system and Brown is done for the year.

Knew this question was getting asked and the answer is no

I don't necessarily disagree with you... the dude spent more time on the bench than a grandma waiting for the bus... do you have anyone in mind better?

I think him going to the Eagles left a bad taste in the mouth of Giants management...

Plus the fucker cant get healthy, let alone stay healthy. Rosters still need to be further cut before the season, I am sure there will be a serviceable safety to come available. One who might actually stay on the field for a couple weeks in a row... and practice too..

If he's healthy - pick him up for league minimum and see what he's got left in the tank. When he was with us and healthy, he was a stud. We should at least look into it.

He got released because he's never healthy.. he warmed the bench for them and earned $150K doing it. The cut him to save the remaining of his $2M contract.
