Today Umenyiora met with reports and after about five “No comments’ in a row about whether he was given any guarantees or if his conversations with Coughlin and general manager Jerry Reese were productive, Umenyiora finally opened up about a lot of things, including why he decided to participate in the offseason program, what his future hold, his impressions ofnew defensive coordiantor Perry Fewell and more.

On why he’s chosen to not say anything further specifically about his situation: “I think for the most part I can’t sit over here and give you the mundane answers. If you ask me a question, I’m going to say exactly how I feel and I think saying how I feel is really a foolish thing publicly. It’s gotten me in a lot of trouble with the team and with the fans and I think it’s setting a bad example with my teammates. So instead of giving the pre-programmed robotic answers, or coming out and saying what I feel, I think it’s just better that I say nothing at all.”

On why he decided to participate in the offseason program: “Look at this facility; it’s a wonderful facility. Jerry Palmieri, our strength coach is an outstanding strength coach and I love working out with him. I have a couple of things to work on with Ronnie Barnes and the training staff, so I think the combination of all those things makes this no better place to be.

On whether he can do what he needs to do without being a problem: “I’ll never e a problem here. I just can’t see myself doing that. I have too much respect for the organization and I love my teammates and I feel like they deserve better than that and they deserve better than me just coming out and speaking out like that.

On if he hopes his participation shows the team’s management that he wants to be a member of the Giants: “I would hope so. I love this team and I love my teammate. I don’t’ want to be anywhere else.”

On the threats he made to retire if he didn’t get his starting job back: “I’ve said a lot of things in my life.”

On if he was guaranteed anything: “I’m not even guaranteed my next breath, so I can’t sit here and say I’ve been guaranteed anything. Obviously I had a conversation with Jerry (Reese) and Coach Coughlin, but the things we talked about will remain private.”

His impressions of new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell: “He’s a really cool guy -- very energetic. I like him a lot. I think the scheme he’s trying to run will best suit the players that we have here, so I’m looking forward to that. I think it’s a good scheme.

On what that scheme is: “It’s a lot different than what we’ve played, in the past, especially on first and second downs. The front seems like it’s going to be good. He doesn’t drop the defensive ends into coverage.”

On whether he thinks his talents will be a good fit for Fewell’s scheme: “I think for the most part, yes. I went back and watched the 2009 Buffalo defense and how their defensive ends played. They get a little wider and get up the field. I think that’s what I’ll be able to excel at.”

On whether he was truly 100 percent last year coming back from knee surgery: “I thought I was 100 percent last year, but to be honest with you, maybe until about a month ago when I was outside doing some of my pass rush drills, I was like, ‘Now I’m really 100%’ because my legs felt much stronger than they did last year. Mentally you can pretty much tell yourself a lot of things and last year I think I was telling myself that I was 100 percent when in actuality I don’t think I was.”

On what went wrong for the defense last year: “I saw a lot of things with the entire defense that went wrong, I just can’t look at some of the things I did specifically wrong. To be completely honest, I saw the same things last year that I saw before last year. I think for the most part even though I played pretty well against the run, I’m a pass rusher; that’s what I do best, and that’s what I’ve always done best. So last year I think as the defense didn’t play well at all, I saw some of the weaknesses I do have against the run were exposed and people saw that. I don’t think I played that much worse than I did last year, but obviously there are a whole bunch of things I need to get better at.”

On how he can improve: “Just be more physical. Sometimes offensive linemen might give you a look and make it look like it’s a pass playing on your speed and make you go up the field when it’s really a run and they give you a draw set and come out at you and then it’s a pass. I have to study more film and know what the offensive lineman is trying to do and then try to execute my responsibility.

On his expectations for 2010: “I think it’s going to be a very, very good season. I think the Giants are going to have a tremendous season and we’re going to return where we need to be and me personally, I’m going to have an outstanding season.”

On the team’s mindset: “Last year we should have played a whole lot better and the way everything ended was just ridiculous. We’re very disappointed with how we played last year. We disappointed our fans and ourselves, and I think we should be motivated. We’ve done enough talking. It’s time to start playing.”

Good man, great to see.

I'm lovin' him already!

That is the most honest answer anyone has ever given...especially the part about pre-programmed robotic answers.
