Nate Collins

I was reading various articles around the net and came up with an interesting page called, "2010 All Un-Drafted Free Agents Defensive Team".

11 players were chosen and second on the list is Nate Collins who has signed with the Giants. Here's what it says:

"
DT- Nate Collins, Nevada/New York
Giants

One of the most underrated Defensive Tackles in the nation, Collins was second in the NCAA , as a Defensive Tackle, in tackles overall to Ndamukong Suh. Collins was a good Defensive Tackle in both the pass and the run. The only things teams do not like about him is his smaller frame and shorter height".

Who knows...could end up being something special...you just never know.

Being short you think some team would have taken a chance on him being a nose tackle in a 3-4 system....a six footer is the prototypical height for a good NT...he can submarine the Center or Guard and then leverage him out of the way. Nice signing.

Before everyone buys into him like the next coming of Jonas Seawright...Nate has started 3 games at the college level before his senior year. His tackles were mostly at backup. There is a reason why he is a street free agent, he's a college backup. Too small of a nose tackle, might be big enough to be DT and fast enough to be a linebacker.

He was second in tackles as a back-up?

Five teams went after his services and he chose the Giants who ponied up 25 grand so he would show up for their training camp. A lot of teams liked him and thought they could pick him up as an undrafted free agent. Not many undrafted players have teams fighting over them like he did.

Anyway....yeah, as an underclassman, he was a backup. But as a senior he was a starter. If he was a couple inches taller, he'd have been drafted....even though, 6'2", 280lbs isn't that small (IMO), except I guess, at the tackle position. Because of his size, he wasn't invited to the combine which also accounts for not being drafted.

Anyway, he's more of a "footballer" than a pretty boy who could model with his shirt off for Muscle Digest or GQ. He's super aggressive and has a nose for the ball, which accounts for his large number of tackles. The book on him says that he "finds the guy with the ball and crushes him". Also, because of his smaller size, he gives offensive linemen fits as he has a reputation of finding a way to slip through the cracks and getting to the quarterback accounting for 6 sacks last season....which is right up there with the top numbe of sacks for a defensive tackle. To put that in perspective, First round pick Gerald McCoy (3rd pick overall) had 4 sacks, first round pick Dan Williams (3rd DT taken in the draft) had 2 sacks, etc. In short, he's probably the polar opposite of Linval Joseph who is a space eater and a friggin boulder in the middle of the line. Joseph will plug up the line and hold it and might end up with one career sack in his lifetime, where as Collins is less interested in standing up the line and prefers to go after whoever has the ball.

Regardless, time will tell if he can cut it in the NFL. The scouts say that he's one of those guys who doesn't wow you with combine-like numbers, but is a real "football player" and has tremendous heart and an uncanny nose for the ball. It wouldn't be the first time an undrafted free agent became a stellar player in the NFL. Cut the guy some slack and let's just see what happens with him. I remember wondering what the hell we were doing with the smallest guy in footbal, Dave Meggett on the team before he won me over as one of his biggest fans....well, until he kept getting arrested for sex crimes.

Agreed.....as an undrafted free agent, it's basically playing with house money.
