  1. Well...looks like Reese and TC are focusing on the trench. Not too sexy, but will probably pay dividends. There was a lot of sexy picks on the board. I wanted Arthur Brown or Margus Hunt
  2. Cool watching a bunch of Eagles fans going nuts over their friend going to the Giants!
  3. I kind of wanted us to take a small school player like JJ Wilcox in the 3rd or Baccario Rambo for no other reason that the name "Rambo". I'm assuming the Gints will go DE/DT in the 2nd unless some surprise is sitting there like Arthur Brown or Minter or something. I wonder what they'd do if Menelik Watson was still on the board. Regardless, I suspect two defensive players tonight with the first one to address the line.
  4. Power is for guards to push or hold the line...tackles need to be more nimble and able to shuffle quickly staying in front of the defensive back doing everything in his power to get around you. I saw Pugh play often over the past couple of years at Syracuse and he's a bull who faced a lot of ranked teams and stuffed their defensive ends as a left tackle - the tougher of the two tackle positions. Pugh is an excellent player and will be a tackle.
  5. I agree...he's being slotted for RT and center is probably the last thing on their minds. He's played left tackle at Syracuse for years. Sure he can play guard too, but the way he shuffles and mirrors defensive backs makes him a good tackle. My bet is he'll be starting over Diehl by week 8. Might spell Snee now and then until then, but as soon as TC sees he's better than Diehl on the outside, Diehl will become the backup. But center??? no way.
  6. I share your affinity towards looking at everything through the mathematical prism of life...especially statistics. But the value board is based on descending value assuming players can be given an accurate mathematical number that likewise descends on a straight line slope (and there's nothing straight about it). In this draft in particular, there were clearly about 15 total studs in the group, and then the next tier of about 50 really, really good players. Giving up a no.22 pick for a no.35 and a no.40 is a steal....basically accepting a 2 for 1 raping if you are one trading up - Vaseline-free cornholing comes to mind here. The 50th best player in the draft (cannot express enough how subjective that is) is just as valuable as the 30th best player. Stocking up on 2nd and 3rd round picks is the way to go this year....unless you happen to have one of the top ten picks and your heart is set on a particular player that other teams want as well.
  7. One of the problems getting so many first round picks is that it will automatically command a large portion of the salary cap. The history of first round "can't miss" busts are legion. And it sucks even more when they get half the team's available money. Not to mention, it always pisses off the old guys that have carried the team on their backs to watch kids come in making 5 times more than they do. Breeds discontent. I don't know...maybe it'll work out well for the Vikes, but because of the NFL's mandated salary requirements and restrictions, it's always nice to find a number of good old fashioned lunch pail steady players later in the draft that don't require a king's ransom to keep them on the team.
  8. Almost as bad was the Vikings pretty much giving away every pick they had (2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th) in the rest of the draft to New England to move up a dozen spots. Pisses me off. Year after year, the Patriots have more picks than they can use and almost always have figured out a way to get someone else's pick for an extra first rounder. This was a great year to trade down for anyone who got the offer. The Vikings offering their 2,3,4 picks was basically bending over and asking a stranger to ass rape them...then Belicek says, "throw in another pick and I promise to rape you even harder".... and the vikes go, "okay"....duhhh.
  9. Holy crap...who is calling the shots for Dallas? How can they take a guy who will very likely still be on the board in the 3rd round? They passed up a lot of gems to get a guy they could've easily gotten in the next round and probably the one after that. I hope they keep it up!
  10. Pretty much...but if they are ball hawks and get a lot of pickoffs, they'll get a lot of credit. But I understand where you're coming from. The better the CB, the less the WR gets thrown to.
  11. What a bummer to be an offensive lineman. It's the only position on the team in which the better you are, the more anonymous you are. In every other position, the better you are, the more attention you get and the more accolades are heaped upon your head by fans and talking heads. If an offensive lineman gets attention, it's because he failed. If he does his job right, a QB or a RB gets attention for a good run or a good throw. I feel sorry for Pugh for the reaction last night in the Giants section. They were all hoping for a sexy pick...one that will not be anonymous, but will be on the back page of the tabloids every Monday morning receiving heaps of praise for running for 200 yards or throwing for 300 yards. I don't think I've ever seen an offensive lineman's picture on the back page of the Daily News or NY Post. Regardless...the more I get used to our pick, the happier I am that we were able to get him. Pugh will be an unsung hero in the trenches for the next 10 years as the glory rains down on Eli, Wilson, and whoever.
  12. Exactly. The very next pick was the Bears who grabbed Kyle Long (perfect body - character issues - can't handle the tackle position) which was the consolation prize of the top tier offensive linemen. And as far as trading goes...you got to have a trading partner and if the phone doesn't ring, not much you can do. My hunch is that the Giants really like Pugh a lot and knew there was no way to get him if he passed them by.
  13. First off...you are 100% right about us taking Joseph in 2003 because there was a run on DT's and he was the only one left on the board. He had the exact physical attributes one wants in a DT...but the book on him was that he played "uninspired", "didn't take practice seriously", "lazy", "not particularly bright", etc., etc. All the warning signs were there. The Giants thought that taking a guy who played without heart would suddenly see the light after we handed him millions.....duhhh. Secondly....Pugh is one of the hardest working, smartest, disciplined, cleanest, players in the draft. If his arms were 1 inch longer, he would be in the same conversations with Fisher and Joeckel - no doubt about it. And as far as "starting day one", there wasn't a single position on the Giants team in which a drafted player would have earned the starting position on day one....with the exception of possibly right tackle. Cut this guy some slack...he is a real baller and will give the Giants 100% all the time and he's a superb technician of a player who is smart (academic all star) and knows exactly what is needed on the offensive line from every position. Do you really think the fact that his fingers are a 1/2 inch shorter and arms 3/4 inch shorter than the "ideal" physical specimen is a good judge of the man's heart, athleticism, character, mental tenacity, and football capabilities? This isn't a beauty contest where physical measurements are the only thing that matters and it's not a fantasy football team where flash is all that matters. How many offensive linemen do you know who saved a QB because his fingers were long and narrow? OT Tony Mandarich was the second pick overall for the Packers a few years back and he had "long arms" and had a great showing in a bowl game. But he was a total bust. Robert Gallery was the second pick overall and was the "best OT to come out of college in the last 25 years" and had "long arms". But he cost the Raiders millions and the guy never panned out to be anything other than a decent OG, because he couldn't hack being an OT in the NFL. I trust our scouts know a whole lot more than the average fan who has to rely on websites and the opinions of other fans.
  14. Wouldn't that be a hoot if he was still on the board when the Giants pick again! Ya never know. I think there'll be a big run for offensive players in the second round since the first round was all about defense or offensive line. Should be some really solid defensive players left on the board and even T'eo could still be there. He needs to stop pouting when the cameras are on him though.
  15. As a Syracuse die-hard fan...I really like Pugh. My thought was that there was no way he'd become a Giant because he'd fall to the bottom of the first or top of the second. I knew he was a very good player, but the magazines and websites had him behind several other guys at that position because they had the prototypical build. Pugh's arm length is supposedly "short", otherwise he'd be top tier simply because he is probably the best technician among the OT's in this draft. We've seen it over and over when a player doesn't have the correct "physical body", he gets downgraded. The list of superstar players with the wrong body type is long and the reason it's long is because there is no way to measure a player's "heart". This guy is going to great in blue. Here's a shot of his "short" arms that supposedly kept him from being "elite" LOL: One of the coolest things about him is that he's a homegrown Philadelphia boy from a family of Eagle fans. Coughlin told him to tell his family to get ready to burn their Eagle jerseys and start planning to purchase Giants jerseys. LMAO.
  16. If ever there was a doubt about the difference between Mayock and Kiper...it showed last night. Mayock hit the nail on the head over and over and has an intimate knowledge of teams and what they need and should be going for. No one on the planet thought the Giants would take Pugh...except of course, Mayock who called it. Kiper reads all the magazines (made up of journalists who build their knowledge by reading competitor's write-ups - a big circular wanking club) and websites from fans looking for flash and builds his database the way a fan builds his fantasy team. Mayock understands what it takes to build a football team and isn't sidetracked by fantasy fluff or reading the latest magazine. Mayock is kind of an arrogant asshole (as is Kiper), but at least he seems to really know his stuff making him a lot easier to take.
  17. If Minter and/or Arthur Brown are still on the board, I don't see how we pass one of them up. There hasn't been a run on linebackers yet, but I suspect there will be early on. However, hard to believe no running backs have been taken off the board in the first round and very few teams went after offense (apart from offensive line) in the first. I suspect there will be a run on offensive players in the second (especially WR's and RB's) which could leave some really good defensive players there for the taking. I'm enamored with the DE Hunt. The more I read, the more I'm impressed. 6'8" and ran a 4.53 and strong as an ox - that's almost WR speed. He has a knack for blocking kicks like I've never seen. He'd be a project because he's new to the game, but has extraordinary talent and is a gifted athlete. The guy is a freakin animal. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1724952/margus-hunt Regardless...hope we go defense in the second - LB or DE
  18. Having arms that are an inch or two longer doesn't help if you don't have the foot movement to keep in front of the defense. It simply makes one start grabbing and getting called for holding. Whenever I see an OT get beat, it's rarely because a guy's arm length is an inch shorter than it could be. As far as I'm concerned, offensive lineman need to be SMART football players and know how to stay low and move laterally when necessary or push back for a run play. Arm length is more important for a DE who is reaching for a QB.
  19. Yeah...I knew we wouldn't pull the trigger although He's going to be really good. After Cincy's team blows up again, we'll be able to pick him up for a 4th or 5th round pick down the road. Then he'll blossom into a star for us!
  20. I've been taking a long look at DE Margus Hunt. What a monster. Another German guy. Set all kinds of world records in Junior Olympics for shot put and discus throw. Competed at an Olympic level in the hammer throw. Took up football at SMU. 6'8" / 275 freaky strong, freaky fast for his size From Wiki (via Dallas News): "For nearly 10 years, Bruce Feldman, a writer for CBSSports.com, has annually compiled what he calls a "Freak List" of the 10 college football players he considers the most freakish athletes. In 2012, Hunt was on top of his list. According to Feldman, Hunt "sounds like a PlayStation football creation" — despite his 82-inch (2.1 m) wingspan, he is able to bench press 225 pounds (102 kg) 35 times, and has also cleaned 384 pounds (174 kg) and snatched 345 pounds (156 kg). Hunt also boasts a 36-inch (91 cm) vertical jump. Wollman predicted that Hunt would have 45 repetitions and a 4.6-second 40-yard dash at the 2013 NFL combine. Hunt did, in fact, run a 4.60-second 40-yard dash and did 38 bench press repetitions while posting a vertical leap of 34.5-inch (88 cm) at the 2013 combine". Would love to pick this guy up tomorrow. Bookend him with JPP.
  21. Well....he's definitely fills a need here and he's so disciplined a player that he'll see plenty of reps this year. Youth is good on that line that's getting long in the tooth and fragile. Not a sexy pick, but a smart one. Build the trenches.
  22. Seems like every year the Cowboys or the Eagles are picking just before us and pick a player high on our radar. Forget that...Dallas just traded down.
