Strategy: Signing or Trader for Eli's Replacement
mastershake replied to NeMesiS's topic in New York Giants
LOL...this defense is trash. We currently have no CB depth behind Jenkins, and Jenkins is up and down. No pass rush. Terrible against the run. Awful Safeties other than Landon Collins. who is a box safety only. The only capable starters on the defense currently are Vernon, Tomlinson, Hill, Ogeltree, Jenkins (a likely cap cut), Collins (free agent who will demand big money). So where are we finding 5-6 more starters on defense that can make an immediate impact, plus depth (on top of offensive issues we need to address)? Please don't say Sam Beal...please. -
Strategy: Signing or Trader for Eli's Replacement
mastershake replied to NeMesiS's topic in New York Giants
Whether or not you think Eli has another year left in him to me is irrelevant because this team is more than just a few FA moves or draft picks away from being a valid contender. For instance, the entire OL is still garbage as a whole. I hate to say it, but this team will not be in contention for anything next year. Blow it up and start the rebuild. I'd prefer a draft pick, but am open to Foles instead as part of that, though he'll have to be open to a transition year in 2019. -
Will he lead teams to 4-12 and 5-11 seasons too?

Sure...take a flyer in the 7th round, perhaps

Strategy: Signing or Trader for Eli's Replacement

I don't know if the future QB of this team is in free agency this year, but my feeling on the draft is: If in evaluating these guys, i.e. Haskins, Jones, Finley, or Lock, the giants feel they have a potential franchise QB, you take them there in the draft this year. You can't assume you'll be in a position to draft a potential franchise QB next year, and you also can't assume any of these 2020 prospects like Tua, Herbert, Frohm will still be considered top prospects by that time. Even if you assume we'll have a bad year, so will other teams looking for a QB. For instance, let's say we pass on a QB in the draft this year, go 5-11 drafting #6 again next year, and it turns out that Tua goes #1 to whatever other team is drafting there, turns out Herbert does not have a great year and is demoted to 2nd, Frohm doesn't work out as expected...we're left holding the bag with no-one. -
Why, cause he's Black? lol

Who is the Jamies Winston? Ryan Finley and Daniel Jones are said to be two of the smartest, accurate QB's to come out in awhile. Drew Lock might be more of the traits type of guy, like Winston.
-
When considering guys like Lock, Jones, Ryan Finley etc this year....keep in mind that Tua and Herbert aren't "sure things" either. You also have to consider that you can't assume you'll be in a draft position next year to pick a top QB, versus now where we are in a position.

And they dropped 36 on us without Zeke.

Put in Lauletta already.

That QB from Duke #17 looks awfully good....
mastershake replied to fringe's topic in New York Giants
Daniel Jones is intriguing, but I bet if his QB coach was not the mentor of Peyton Manning, we're talking about Daniel Jones as a 5th round pick, not 1st round pick. What a difference an association can make. -

The 2020 QB Draft Class is shaping up to be a great one, between Tua, Jake Frohm, Justin Herbert, and Dwayne Haskins if he goes back. The 2019 QB Draft Class, now that Herbert is going back for his senior season is just meh. Drew Lock, Will Grier, Daniel Jones, Ryan Finley. Still, if one of these guys is around in the 2nd or 3rd, I'd take them (we'd have to trade back into the 3rd round). Though superstition: Does anyone else see a potential problem with taking a big and tall 6'5, slightly mobile QB with all the tools, from Duke, wearing #17, to eventually takeover for your beloved franchise QB of the past decade plus? Where has this happened before? LOL -
Landon Collins out for shoulder surgery 4-6 months
mastershake replied to Tempest's topic in New York Giants
He's an upfield/box player in my assessment. He needs to always be on the attack. Can't cover. Even if he was moved to LB, his coverage would be suspect. -

Yeah, he's had two injuries now, which fortunately have happened toward the end of seasons. I'm not willing to put down $12mm per year on those fortunes though, to try him out at an inside LB position after the two injuries, particularly the shoulder. -

I was thinking that as well, but between his elbow injury last year and now his shoulder, I wonder about his durability. -

I can't see him going for more than $10-12mm per year. -

Ehh.... Landon needs to go to a 4-3 defense where he can be moved to a weakside LB position, and play underneath or blitz in sub-packages. He's an up-field player. He can't play in reverse. Having said that...we could always resign him as an attacking, upfield safety in sub-packages, but we'd still need to fill the backfield with a better cover safety, and I'm not sure we want to pay 6-$10mm per year (or whatever the lofty contract will be) for a sub-package player PLUS another safety because Landon can't cover. -

Ideally yes, if we can find a replacement. -

Well his free agent contract value just dropped in half. No more than $5-6mm per year. 4 years $25mm tops. -
The defense is a fucking joke.

Everyone in the stadium knew that ball was going to Cohen except for the giants.
-
Yeah Jamon Brown. Real keeper. LOL.

Lauletta time?

It can be either defending on the scheme, offensive set, and defensive play call. Sometimes during the game, a safety will have to line up in man coverage is the point, and they at least need to be able to cover a TE. You start pulling LB's off onto TEs, the offense will start running the ball down your throat.

A safety needs to at least be able to cover a TE. Thats the bare minimum. Landon cant do even that. Im not sure what happened to him. Maybe bulking up reduced his speed?
