Personally, I like Collins and Flowers more than Scherff, but Scherff is probably about as safe a pick as there is. Not sexy, just a solid trench guy.

I have watched him play for 3 years.....what doesn't show up in any of these scouting reports are his intangibles. ....the fucker is a very good athlete.

Couple of examples.

Last game of season against Nebraska...Iowa is down 3 points with 5 seconds to go and on their own 40......they do one of those Chaos plays plays were everyone laterals etc, etc.....last guy to have the ball....30 yards down field....with a one handed catch...on the side line....who then tippy toes another 7 yards before getting knocked out of bounds.......Scherff.

Non Conference game against Ball State...the game he hurt his knee....he did it on an interception ....the Iowa QB at the time apparently had an overwhelming sense of fairness and used to at least once a game spot the other team a pick 6.....on this one...Scherff ran the guy down ...a DB....30 yards and got him at the goal line...he got hurt when our QB came in late on the tackle....even then....with a procedure...he didnt miss a game and actually came back into the ball state game.

The other thing...is the kid is fucking nasty....has a mean streak....will not back down......he has had issues with smaller speed rushers on occassion.....but that is about the only hole in his game.

Nice to hear the opinion of someone who has actually watched and followed him. All I have to go on is what I read. He sounds like the all American white, corn-fed, farm boy from Iowa. Reminds me of a kid from the school up the road from me. Huge kid. Lived on a dairy farm. Couldn't afford weights so he would back up to a cow, grab it's legs, and lift if up and down while doing deep knee bends. After getting shit on a time or two, he started lifting the front end of tractors or the back end of small cars. Kid was tough as nails and no one with an ounce of sense messed with him.

Glad to hear Scherff has a nasty streak because everything written about him is that he's top notch, but you don't hear the word "mean" or "nasty". When operating in the trenches, one of the most important thing is that first slap-punch side the head to declare your dominance over the defensive lineman. And today's d-linemen are getting meaner and stronger all the time.

Regardless, there isn't a publication going that doesn't have him listed as the top lineman in the draft. But who knows what goes on behind closed doors with Reese and the coaches.

I'm rooting for canola-fed farm boy Brett Jones.

LOL - I had to do some research on Canola to understand the Canadian connection.

I too am rooting for this kid. He's kind of an unknown commodity that has flown under the radar in all the chatting around the different boards. If he turns out to be a hidden gem and a stud lineman, it will make me very happy.

In my opinion (for what it's worth), our real issue last year was injuries. Everyone has injuries, but for the second year in a row, the Giants led all teams in injuries. And we had no real depth. Heck, we were signing kids left and right from other teams' practice squad and using them for starters.

I like that we have picked up a few vets in free agency as I think they are being groomed for depth...and man do we need depth. I hope like crazy we have a healthy Schwartz all year and hope that Jones turns out to be good enough to push Jerry out of the starting job. And that would make me happy.

I don't know much about Marshall Newhouse that we picked up in free agency, but McAdoo worked with him at Green Bay and I suspect he knows more about his abilities than reporters copying notes from other reporters. I hope he can be a solid backup.

I think the Giants are going OL unless Cooper is there at #9. And while I wouldn't mind Scherff at all, the injuries worry me a bit. I really like Collins. I think the ideal scenario would be for the Giants to trade back a couple of spots and take Collins, while hopefully landing an additional 2nd Rounder, if they can find a dance partner.

idk why I have a feeling that this year the Giants will trade down to the mid teens.

He grew up about 60 miles from my inlaws' farm - Weyburn, Saskatchewan.

That's cool. Then he should have no problem playing in those freezing cold games we get in now and then.

From everything I've read, he's driven to prove he's NFL ready and most who have watched him think he is as well. I hope they are right.

C. Wagon probably knows more than I do, but from what i've seen on tape Scherff doesn't look mean and nasty. I see him lack the ability to drive guys into the ground, I don't see him latch on to a defender and drive him off the ball, he wins with an initial punch and then seems to give up. Like Gmen said in the other thread he goes to sleep at the end of most games. I also see a lot of lunging and grasping. I am not sold on Collins either. From what I hear Flowers is the Giants top lineman, but feel nine is too high for him. They view Scherff has an OT, meaning they won't pick him because they don't believe he would be good enough to replace Pugh. I feel defense is the way they go, if Cooper is gone. I believe Cooper is gone and Shelton will be the pick.

The way I'd look at it if I was in the front office is this:

1) Can we get a stud offensive lineman in the 2nd round?

2) Can we get a stud defensive player in the 2nd round?

If the answer to 1 is "yes" and the answer to 2 is "no"........then a no brainer, take a defensive player with the 9th overall pick.

If the answer to 1 is "no" and the answer to 2 is "yes"........again, a no brainer, take the best O-lineman

If the answer to 1 and 2 are both "yes"........trade down if possible and get an extra pick

If the answer to 1 and 2 are both "no".......take the BPA that is not a QB or RB

-------------------------------------

The draft is incredibly deep for WR and RB. All other positions are pretty skimpy this year of looking for proven studs. It's very important that we get at least 2 studs with our first 2 picks.

Is there is an offensive lineman worth the ninth overall pick? I think the answer to that is no and hearing the front office feels the same way. The need on the Oline isn't at tackle, it's at guard and i don't believe they would force a OT just to move Pugh. I've been against moving Pugh and never seen the point of filling a hole by opening another hole

I actually think if they took Scherff, they'd move him to guard and leave Pugh at RT. Scherff would be a backup tackle in the case that we had an injury or spelling a tackle to keep fresh legs on the line during high scoring games in which the o-line is on the field for long periods of time.
