fringe
Well, after watching The Freak throw another gem, I was all ready to campaign for Lincecum. However I checked Webb's stats and they are pretty impressive as well. Right now, it's too close to call. I guess if Webb gets 20 wins, they will give it to him. I think all 3 guys deserve it. Herc
1)lincecum 2) volquez 3) webb i dont place a huge emphasis on wins though, unfortunately the media does--so webb will win it

fringe
The ball flies out of Chase Field so maybe Webb has done the best job so far. But, he has won one already, right?- for some reason he doesn't seem like a multiple Cy guy.

LorfTVP
You gotta go with Tiny Tim. He's leading the league in ERA, which always helps, along with having about 50 more strikeouts than both Webb and Volquez who are more sinkerball types. If not for the W-L record, Santana would be right in this argument as well. Lincecum, Santana and Webb all lead the NL with 21 Quality Starts apiece. Volquez has 18. I dunno, it's strikeouts versus wins pretty much...for now.
fringe
strikeouts, while chicks may dig them, are overrated. i would not discount sinker ball pitchers. they throw less pitches and are able to get out of trouble. also, they tend to be around at the end of games and at the end of seasons. i would love to see lincecum ilower his pitch count and throw less strikeouts. LorfTVP
That's a valid point except Lincecum has only pitched 7 fewer innings than Webb. So, despite their varying styles, they've started the same number of games, pitched the same number of innings, etc.

Holy shit, best I ever saw live (meaning watching the game live on tv, not in person) was Mussina striking out the first 6 when he played for the 0's. How many people have struck out the first 9 batters of a game? Not many I bet.
Virginia Giant
Oddly enough, while searching for the answer, i found this. "Michael Francis Welch was a four-time 30-game winner who once struck out the first nine batters he faced, a record that remains untouched." Thats from si.com in an article from 2004. The kicker, Mr. Welch played for the New York Giants 19th player down on the list.

feefifoefum
A few weeks ago, I thought people were nuts for throwing Sabathia's name in the mix. Now I'm thinking, to hell with the Cy Young Award, this guy deserves to be mentioned as an NL MVP candidate. What he has done for the Brewers is amazing, especially pitching his last 3 games all on 3 days rest, and pitching well! No way the Brewers get in without him, and that is a true MVP. I know there's no chance in hell he'll win either award, but he should get some kind of recognition for what he's done. My vote goes to Lincecum. I like his delivery, so that's why I'm choosing him. If the Mets bullpen wasn't the Mets bullpen, I think Santana had as good a chance as anyone. The guy hadn't lost since June 28th, and I think he lead the league in ERA. 2 or 3 more wins, and he's right there.

(btw, his first choice for next year is the giants). you can make a case for Lidge too for Cy. Really, any of the 4 they pick is deserving and you can't argue. LorfTVP
I definitely think Sabathia deserves MVP consideration but I don't like him swooping in and trying to win the Cy Young in half a season. True, he was incredibly dominant, going 11-2 with 7 CG, 3 shutouts, with a 1.65 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, a .222 BAA, and 128 Ks in 130.2 innings. But the real matchup comes between Tim Lincecum, Brandon Webb, and Johan Santana. All three come from non-playoff teams, which is a point for C.C., but still, I don't like him in this discussion. The numbers are remarkably identical. In CG, IP, etc. Basically, Webb is +4, 6 in Wins but is -0.80 or so in ERA. Meanwhile, Santana and Lincecum both have a much better ERA but a few less wins. In between those two, the only difference is about sixty strikeouts. I dunno, it's gonna be a tough one.
