Martinez needs to preserve Mets' bullpen after marathon loss

NY Mets (11-5) at San Diego (7-9) 10:05 pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Pedro Martinez's turn in the rotation could not come at a better time for the New York Mets.

Having dropped three of their last four games, including a marathon setback to the San Diego Padres on Friday, the Mets need Martinez to come up big when the teams continue their four-game series on Saturday.

San Diego outlasted New York, 2-1, on Friday as Brian Giles delivered the game-winning double in the 14th inning. The Mets used seven pitchers in the contest, but at least they have their three-time Cy Young Award winner to fall back on in this one.

Martinez (3-0, 3.66 ERA) yielded three runs in 6 2/3 innings Monday in a 4-3 triumph against Atlanta. The righthander has not won four straight decisions since the summer of 2004, when he won six straight for the Boston Red Sox.

The Padres will give the nod to Chris Young (2-0, 2.95), who has won his last two starts in impressive fashion. The 6-10 righthander surrendered just two runs and five hits in seven innings Monday in a 5-2 win against Colorado.

Young, who never has faced the Mets, has allowed only 10 hits in 18 1/3 innings this season.

It's clear that Pedro respects Piazza so much he laid one in there for Mike to crush.

No other way to explain how a so badly shot player hits a ball 470 feet.

Seeing Mike hit .200 and get run on worse than ever is sad.

Pedro is dealing 10 k's
