Guest Floyd The Barber Posted April 6, 2006 Share Posted April 6, 2006 have you seen any giants game in the past year? yes i have...with that said, it really doesnt matter who lines up at TE or #2 and #3 WR bc Eli couldnt hit the broad side of a barn anyway in 2005 when it mattered...as long as we have a healthy upright Tiki, and our O-Line remains in tack my plan would work...you can put window dressings at WR and TE for 2006...it wouldnt matter... this plan is designed to restore the defense back in Giants football...the way the franchise was built and the way our franchise was intended to be...accordingly we "have" the QB of the future already...everything else will fall into place as we move along... If you remember the 2002 season I believe, many would say we had a great chance to make the Superbowl until the debachle against the 49ers. The special teams fiasco that ensued seemed to trigger a tailspin into darkness for a while, but we were definitely expected to do better than we did. I agree, our team right now is very talented where we have youth, and I expect a very bright future for this unit. But we certainly have the talent on hand that is needed to go farther than we have. Tell me you didn't think our team played well enough at times last year to win a superbowl? For a good portion of the season, we had the #1 scoring offense. The players are in place. As far as dominating defense, there was a stretch of something like 3 games this past season where our defense didn't give up a touchdown. That's pretty damn dominating. I agree, they need to be more consistent, but the talent is once again there. Our special teams were a bright spot all year, except the Vikings game and Jay Feel's game changing misses against Seattle and Dallas. David Tyree is possibly the best non-kicking special teams player in the league, and we have several young players that have a nose for delivering the blow on coverage. Willie Ponder was leading NFC candidate for Pro Bowl kick return specialist until he fumbled against the Vikings and dissapeared for the rest of the season. Let my try to further clarify my question: There is an obvious parity in the league right now, and it seems like the team that has that certain intangible to get it over the hump (ala the New England Patriots of the past few years) is the one that is going to seperate itself from the others. What are the intangibles that makes up a championship winning team? Is it team unity (no T.O. type attitudes)? Ability to stay healthy? Something else? The bulk of my answer has already been stated regarding the injuries last season. I still don't know that we beat Carolina with a fully healthy team but we damn sure don't allow Deshaun Foster to run on us the way he did. Compared with how he did against other teams in the playoffs you could make an argument that we did an OK job containing Steve Smith. We didn't put nearly enough pressure on Delhomme and that simply a case where the Panthers O-Line won the battle that day. Yes there were times last season where I felt this team could make a deep playoff run. I never felt they were better than the best teams in the AFC. However, once Pierce went down, we struggled to stop the run. Teams that can't stop the run simply don't win many playoff games. I'd say all the intangibles you mentioned above make up a Championship team, although New England has proven you don't HAVE to stay healthy. Building our O around undrafted Rookies is just plain stupid....Toomer hasn't been a #1 WR in a good 3 years...In 04 he didn't even have 1 TD...last time he had more then 70 catches was 2002...He is old slow and cant catch...Why do you think the FO was trying to bring in Meshawn Taylor / Carter #2 and #3 ....OK I can see Taylor (It seems like they fixed the botched surgery from Collage..) Martin Posted April 6, 2006 Share Posted April 6, 2006 In the recent years of the Giant franchise, we've had a whole lot of potential. But that's it - just potential. It's really seemed to me that despite our teams sometimes overacheiving and recently overbearing talents, something just isn't there. What do you think it is - the one thing that completes a football team? i would have to say a few things that make this work and the giants have been making strides to obtaining them. What is missing is a stingy Defense . One with balance. the giants are moving in that direction ! Another item is leadership Especially on defense we have lacked this quality. As much as Strayhan is a great player he lacked the ability to lead his Defense as a group but as a Solo act he is a great player. THe Giants with the acuisition of Pierce are getting closer and with Sam Adams at CB I think we are one LB away from getting the attitude it takes to play that championship D. We have lacked attitude and the leaders on D for a long time. The Giants have a more disiplined coach and coaching staff and that why the team is improving especially on Special Teams. THe last item that was mentioned is quality backup players because with stronger faster players the rise in injury will not go away so having players that can step in and make plays and still have the team compete is a huge area for getting to deep in the playoffs. If the Giants put together that stingy balanced D and keep putting together more quality backups you dont have to score a tremendous amount of points to win. I see a more competitive NFC East but I see the Giants ready to face the challenge and do what it takes to win. THis is a very good football team in the making. If we get a strong DT to replace clancy and draft 2 excellent LB's the Giants will be a much stronger team than last year. Well I think you can count 2 votes asking you to take the high road already. In hindsight I should say that while firstnten ended up bearing the brunt of my soapbox lecture it certainly wasn't intended to single him out. If you're among the many that constantly feel the need to respond to obvious baiting tactics then it's targeted at you too.
