    Baseball Musings for Wednesday

    Wednesday, March 01, 2006

On paper, the Mets are the clear favorites to win the National League.

    Wait.

    Did you hear that?

That was the sound of every Mets fan in the world simultaneously going, "Sssssshhhh!"

No Mets fan wants to hear that the Mets are favored to do anything. The natural state of the Mets fan is misery and pessimism. The history of the Mets franchise is one of crushing mediocrity and disappointment punctuated by occasional, surprising success. Even their greatest team was supposed to follow the glory of 1986 with more glory and ... didn't.

So, when somebody says the additions of Carlos Delgado and Billy Wagner to an already promising roster in a weak division make the Mets the favorites, the Mets fan thinks:

Jim Fregosi, Pat Zachry, Doug Flynn, Terry Pendleton, Mike Scioscia, Orel Hershiser, Juan Samuel, Bobby Bonilla, Vince Coleman, Kenny Rogers, Armando Benitez, Luis Sojo, Mo Vaughn, Roberto Alomar ...

We don't want to say the Mets' expectations are too high, because they're not. They do look very good. And being favored in the National League is like being favored to win a beauty pageant in which all of the other contestants are wild boars.

But history tells Mets fans to fear expectations like these.

When you're a Mets fan, you have to see it first.

    well said

  2. :TU:

watch out man... a certain someone might come in here and get all pissed off because they see the words "Yankees Suck" .... oh yeah, and b.t.w., I'm looking forward to every Yankee fan on this MB to look for excuses why we're going to do better this year then them... Even if we won the World Series they'll come back with some stupid ass comment... lol

  3. Odds are you'd fix RB elsewhere but if it turns out you do sign no one else, then you are stuck with Dominic Rhodes, who actually is a former 1000 yard rusher when James was down for that year or two.

Jamal Lewis, or possibly another bad ass RB... trust me, alot of RB's want to join the Colts...James would be dumb to leave...who knows you guys might even get S. Alexander if he leaves

  4. What did $104,770,139 get the Mets last year?

    83-79 .512 4th place.

the same thing your over paid got... no World Series win... and the last time we were in the series your cheap ass team beamed 2 balls at our star players head...

  5. What a dumb comment....a division title means the team was good the entire season. Gives us fans something to watch, something to talk about every day at work. Would you rather your team be in last place and have no shot at the division? I'd rather see my team atleast make the playoffs and have some hope of winning it all. Ofcourse we all hate when our team loses in the playoffs, but there's only one winner at the end of the year and I'd like to say my team atleast had a chance.

I agree to an extent, but remember the Marlins haven't won anywhere near the amount of Division championships as the Braves, but they won the World Series more than they have in the past 20 years... it's all about who wins the big games...

  6. lol too late i got banned from the boards for trying to recruit people to other message boards. the mods over there suck. glad i'm out of there if they are gonna kick a guy with 18,000+ posts out of there for trying to recruit other people to different boards then that board sucks. o and what sucks even more is they deleted my posts so barely anyone read them. :TD:

if you want to apply your post from there to here, just post you old count here... http://www.sportswrath.com/index.php?showtopic=190

  7. personally as a colts fan i would really like to see them re-sign him. I heard there was a 50-50 chance they will re-sign him. Is it going to be worth it in the long run i dont know.

trust me... Harrison and Manning will talk to him and see if he'll take a cut in his pay like Peyton, just so they can make their attempt for the Super Bowl

  8. bunch of UCONN fans on the cowboys message board (dont know why) but i can get them. i'm like the leader on the dallas boards.

cool..not just that, but when football season comes around if you bring enough Cowboy fans to then I'll see if Nemesis wants to make a forum just for the Cowboys like the Giants and the Jets have in the NFL section... plus it would be very intresting when we play each other... if you can recruit w/o getting yourself in trouble with their Mods., that would be awesome bro...

  9. From what I've read, Willie isn't committed to any line up and wants to see how it goes in Spring Training. As much as I hated on him last year, I'm trying to be more open minded and not be negative (thinking he is committed to Lo Duca @ 2nd).

I'd rather have this order at this moment:

    Reyes

    Beltran

    Wright

    Delgado

    Floyd

    Diaz/Nady

    2B

    Lo Duca

    Pitcher

  10. I think Matsui is going to start the season but I do want Anderson Hernandez on the final 25 man roster going into the season for pinch hitting, and possibly to motivate Kaz even more.

I agree, and if he plays crappy then bench him a week or two and see how Anderson Hernandez can do as a starter

  11. PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Pedro Martinez said yesterday he hasn't ruled out pitching for the Dominican Republic in the first round of next month's World Baseball Classic. But the Mets star admitted he doesn't realistically think he has enough time to get ready for the opening round which, for the Dominicans, is scheduled to begin March 7.

Martinez has yet to throw off a mound as he tries to overcome the right foot and toe discomfort that has plagued him since the 2004 season. He said he hopes to throw off the "slope of the mound" this weekend.

Newsday reported yesterday that Martinez was definitely out of the first round, but the pitcher said that's a little premature.

"What I said was I don't think I have enough time (to get ready for the opening round)," he said. "Write it the right way, so we don't have any misunderstandings. I'm not ruling it out. I don't think I'll have enough time to get in shape to pitch at that level.

"When is the first game? The 7th? Look how far we are and I haven't even gotten on the mound. You guys make a judgment from there. I'm not ruling it out."

In a conference call with reporters, Gene Orza, the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players' Association, said he thought it was still possible that Martinez would pitch in the tournament at some point.

"But I think it's, at best, 50-50 right now," Orza said.

Martinez, who referred to himself as "one of the biggest names in my country," said he feels no pressure from the Dominican people to participate in the tournament.

"I'd love to be there for my people," he said. "My people know, they understand, that my heart is with my team, with them. They're not going to want me to be hurt and look back (with regret) because where they have me, it's a pretty high standard.

"They don't expect me to do anything but what I've done -- compete at the best level, at the top of my ability. If I'm not going to be like that, well, I'm pretty sure they will understand."

Kaz Matsui turned a few heads during batting practice when he ripped the first pitch thrown to him by Billy Wagner for a line single to left. The next pitch was an extra-base hit that bounced against the fence in right. Matsui also homered off the Mets new closer during a later round.

"It was just the first at-bat of spring training," said the second baseman. "But to be able to hit that well off of a fast pitcher is always encouraging."

Wagner said Matsui didn't treat him any worse than most hitters do during spring training.

"I'm horrible (in spring training)," he said. "I try to get it all out of the way down here."

Matsui and Bret Boone worked with the infield starters yesterday. But manager Willie Randolph said not to read much into that.

"We didn't sit down and pay much attention to who was in what groups," he said. "Obviously, most of the veterans are going to be in one group. That's the way it is in most camps."

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said the team would likely make an announcement about its plans for a new stadium early next month.... Cliff Floyd got to take his first live batting practice of the spring against sidearm lefty Mike Venafro. "It (stunk)," said the left-handed hitting outfielder. "But what the hell? It's good to see what those lefties look like. I (stunk) vs. lefties last year anyway."

    Wow.

I don't know if I'm happy for Matsui or scared about Wagner's performance

Johnny Damon said that no other manager he has played for had ever set his sights as high as Joe Torre did on the first day of spring.

    :TU:

I hope Damon gets hurt in the first game, and that night chokes on his own tongue while sleeping... talk shit in your fag ass Yankee section... trust me I'll be in the Yankees section after the Mets have a better record than you over-priced fags

  13. Way to stand up for your team :(

lol... were just talking shit... b.t.w. this just in.... Red Sox vs Mets in the World Series for 2006... that's my prediction, and just to go a bit forward... The Mets win in the 6th game...final score 5-4 in the 11th Inning because of a home-run by Delgado

  14. Julian Peterson

Well I would like to get him, he can play the Weak Side, Strong Side, Middle, in a 3-4 or 4-3, and he has even played DE and SS on some plays.

what do you think? Yes he will cost lots of money, but is he worth it?

I'm a little bit more worried in the Safety/Corner depatment...but IF he was affordable, why not...
