Jets Extend Kendall; Waive Mawae

The New York Jets announced today the extension of G/C Pete Kendall’s contract and the release of C Kevin Mawae. The announcements were made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

“We are pleased to extend the contract for Pete,” said Tannenbaum. “In 2005 he displayed the versatility that we knew he possessed when he signed with the Jets in 2004. His leadership skills and high level of play provide us flexibility along the interior of the offensive line.”

“I have admired the way that Pete Kendall prepares and plays the game of football,” said Head Coach Eric Mangini. “He’s a smart player, tough, competitive, hard-working, selfless and football is important to him.”

Kendall, 32, signed with the Jets as a free agent in August, 2004 and has started all 32 regular season games with the Jets the past two seasons as well as both of the Jets’ postseason games following the 2004 season. The 6-5, 280-pound Boston College product and 1996 first round draft choice of the Seattle Seahawks has played in 145 regular season career games and started 143 of the contests, splitting time throughout his career between guard and center. In 2005 he stepped in midway through the season and assumed the starting center position after C Kevin Mawae was forced to the bench with an arm injury.

Mawae, 35, recently completed his eighth season with the Jets and his 12th in the NFL, following his selection in the second round of the 1994 NFL by the Seattle Seahawks. Mawae joined the Jets in March of 1998 as an unrestricted free agent after his first four seasons with the Seahawks, and has played in 180 career regular season games, making 177 starts, and started all seven postseason games he has appeared in, all with the Jets. Mawae was a six-time Pro Bowl selection (1999-2004) while playing for the Jets.

“Kevin was a tremendous player for the Jets and we are appreciative of his contributions both on-and-off the field for the organization,” said Tannenbaum. “We wish him the best of luck as he starts a new chapter in his career.”

Jets and Pennington Mutually Agree to a Restructured Contract

The New York Jets and quarterback Chad Pennington announced today that the two sides have reached an agreement to restructure Pennington’s contract. Per team policy, details of both the financial and length of the agreement are undisclosed. The announcement was made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Jets Extend Kendall; Waive Mawae

“Our intention all along was to have Chad remain with the Jets and we never wavered from that,” said Tannenbaum. “Chad is a courageous and talented leader. Throughout this process, he put the interests of the team ahead of his own, enabling us to reach an agreement on terms beneficial to both parties. Chad has worked very hard to return from the surgery he underwent in October and has shown the same determination in rehab as he exhibits on the field. He understands the challenges associated with coming back from his injury, but is committed to do what it takes to succeed.”

“I said when I took over the head coaching job that I respected and admired Chad as a person and a competitor,” said Head Coach Eric Mangini. “Through words and deeds, Chad has stated how important it is for him to remain with the Jets. He is a smart, tough, competitive, hard-working football player and has demonstrated he is willing to make sacrifices for the betterment of the team. We are constantly looking for players who place the accomplishments of the Jets ahead of individual goals, and Chad is an excellent example.”

“Heading into the off-season, I knew that re-working elements of my contract was a possibility,” said Pennington. “That’s the business-side of the industry and that’s what the off-season is for. It was nothing personal, and I understand that. Moving forward, I am anxious to return to the playing field and feel very positive about where we are in the process. I am excited to play for Coach Mangini and realize the Jets are going to do what the organization needs to do to get this team better at every position. Likewise, I’m going to do what I need to do to get better because if I get better, this organization will get better. Since I was drafted by the Jets my singular goal has been to help get this team to the championship level.”

Pennington, who has started 37-of-44 regular season career games, has thrown 1,174 career passes, completing 767 of them, for 8,621 yards with 55 touchdowns and 30 interceptions for a career passer rating of 92.1. Pennington owns the highest career passer rating in franchise history, the highest completion percentage (65.3), has thrown for the fifth-most passing yardage, attempted the sixth-most passes, and owns the best touchdown-to-interception ratio (1.83-to-one) in team annals. He has compiled a record of 21-16 as the Jets’ starting quarterback (.568 winning percentage), which is the highest-winning percentage ever among starting quarterbacks in team history, and owns a 2-2 record in the postseason.

Pennington, 29, concluded his sixth season as a professional in 2005. The native of Knoxville, TN and graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, WV was obtained by the Jets in the 2000 NFL Draft with the 18th selection overall. After seeing limited playing time in both his rookie (2000) and second seasons (2001) in the NFL, Pennington took over the starting signal-caller duties earlier in the 2002 season and guided the Jets to their second-ever AFC East title and the postseason on 399 attempts on 275 completions for 3,120 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions for a passer rating 104.2, the highest passer rating in the NFL that season. His 2003 season got off to a difficult start when he suffered a fracture-dislocation of his left wrist during a preseason game against the New York Giants that sidelined him for the first six games of the season, before returning and leading the Jets in passing (297 attempts-189 completions-2,139 yards-13 touchdowns-12 interceptions).

In 2004 Pennington started the first eight games of the season and helped the Jets jump out to their best start (5-0) in franchise history before suffering a shoulder injury that forced him to the sidelines for the next three contests. He then returned and guided to the Jets to the playoffs on 370 attempts - 242 completions - 2,673 yards – 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions for a passer rating of 91.0.

The 2005 season ended after three games for Pennington, as he suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder that both he and the team determined the best-case scenario would be for an extended rehabilitation process to occur following a surgical procedure. He started the first three games and attempted 83 passes, completing 49 of them for 530 yards and two touchdowns to three interceptions.

In postseason games Pennington has tied the franchise record for most wins by a starting quarterback (two) through his first four starts, and has attempted 138 career passes with 84 completions for 866 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions for a passer rating of 84.4.

Just wondering Exit who do you want the Jets to draft

D'Brickshaw Fergueson i think makes the most sense for them but they also have other big needs

or would you trade??

I'd trade down; if not possible, I'd like Ferguson.

Real Question;

You stated earlyer that you wanted to trade down, now that you have 2 picks in the first are you still interested in doing so Or would you pick players...and who

If we could somehow trade down from 4 to around 16 or so, and get either a 2nd or 3rd round pick, or 3rd and 4th, etc. that'd be nice. If we don't, I'd like to see a #4 and #29 for #2, and if we have to, I'd throw in a 4th round pick (Herm) to get Leinart. Saints would still probably want more, though. At #4, I'd like Leinart, but that isn't happening. We can't use Ferguson, and I don't like Cutler or Young. I can't see us drafting another DE in the first round, but if we have to, I'd like Williams at #4, and if not, Kiuwanka at #29 if he's there. My #1 want, though, is Nick Mangold at #29. We can't get him with our #35 because the Saints will grab him before we get the chance. I could also see Tangini (Tannenbaum + Mangini) maybe taking Hawk at #4 to compliment Vilma on the inside (3-4 this year). Also at #29 Haloti Ngata would be nice, but he'd probably be gone by then. We don't have a true NT on the roster; Robertson is better suited at 3T (where he sucks anyway) and although Von Oelhoffen was an NT earlier in his career, I don't think he is suited for it anymore. Unless they trust Pouha (what a waste of a pick), they're going to have a makeshift NT.

Woh, You really thought about everything  .....I take it that you feal as though there is no chance to move up and grab Bush? maybe 2 first and a second and maybe more? Also you might be able to get Leinart at 3 (Saints got Brees, How screwed up would it be if the Saints take Leinart...It would be like SD all over again :P ) and wouldnt have to give up so much maybe just #4 & #29 and keep your 4th....Young and Cutler scare me too...Young reminds me more of a Aron Brooks then DMac.....I dont know about Cutler...Kinda on the fence with him...Strong accurate passer but is he a Big fish in a little pond...Vanderbilt isn't playing top teams

I don't want Bush, and the Jets haven't shown much interest. He is a LOT like Brian Westbrook, who is very unimpressive. I can't see Bush being an every down back, either. I doubt the Titans would trade with us because they have a dire need at QB, too; I'm sure they'd rather have the pick between the 3 (or 2, if Saints trade down) rather than us. The Saints wouldn't take Leinart, but they would very easily trade down because of their holes, especially on the defensive side.

Meanwhile, in Jets news:

Jets sign FB Micheal Warren (UDFA)

Also, screwing around with the NewYorkJets.com news site, I came across the fact that they re-signed Chris Baker. They just didn't write the article yet.
