Maine, Mets look to take two-game set

Washington (8-18) at NY Mets (17-8) 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - John Maine makes his New York Mets debut as they aim to sweep the second game in their brief two-game set against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

The Mets acquired Maine (NA) from Baltimore in the offseason trade for Kris Benson. Pitching for the Class AAA Norfolk Tides, he gained his first win on Wednesday, allowing just one run and five hits in seven innings.

The 25-year-old righthander had a record of 1-3 with a 2.63 ERA in four starts in AAA this season and is 2-4 with a 6.60 ERA in 11 games - nine starts - in the majors.

The Mets pulled out a 2-1 win on Monday as Endy Chavez scored the winning run on a throwing error by Washington reliever Gary Majewski in the bottom of the ninth.

The Nationals will counter with rookie Michael O'Connor (0-1, 0.00), who will be making his second career start. The lefthander made his major league debut on Thursday in St. Louis, giving up three unearned runs in five frames.

Washington batters stuck out eight times on Monday with sluggers Nick Johnson and Alfonso Soriano going down twice each. It also left 10 runners on base.

I realize he was pitched around, but since they moved wright into the 4 hole he lost his stroke. They need to do something so he can get it back.

well with Carlos bach he is now back in the 5 hole.

Wright is not a cleanup hitter He is a number 3 or 5 hitter. Lo Duca just hits for contact so well he needs to be behind Reyes. While Beltran was hurt putting Wright at cleanup was a mistake, he should have gone into the third spot.

Why 3 runs?

1-1 Duke hit a bomb.

I just brought up a random number for that.

From the parts I watched tonight, Maine didn't look so bad. Maybe Rick P can make up for Zambrano by turning this guy around.
