Giants looking at a new kick returner

Who Is Will Blackmon…?

By John Fennelly on Oct 28, 2010, 7:06 pm

…and why should we think he’s an improvement over Darius Reynaud…?

Because anyone would be an improvement, that’s why. Darius Reynaud leads the league with 22 punt returns. He is averaging 5.9 yards per return.

That does not lead the league, by the way. Of all the punt returners in the NFL with 12 or more attempts, Reynaud is by far the least productive.

When the Vikings threw Reynaud in the Sage Rosefels deal, most Giant fans felt like they got a steal. They got robbed, instead….

Blackmon, a former Green Bay Packer who was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week twice, promises to be a better option at this point. He was once one of the league’s more successful returners until a torn ACL sidetracked his career last season.

From Total Packers.com….

Blackmon tore his ACL early in the 2009 season, and his knee was balky throughout training camp, but he’s been working out since the Packers released him.

Despite averaging 23.4 yards per return, the Packers weren’t happy with their opening-day kickoff returner, Jordy Nelson, because he’s fumbled twice. Nelson was replaced with Pat Lee, who is averaging an uninspiring 19.8 yards per return.

Blackmon has career averages of 21.1 on kickoff returns and 11.0 on punt returns. He’s returned three punts for touchdowns in his career.

If Blackmon can help get the return game back on track, that would be one thing teams will have to fear about these Giants……..

Yah, Minnesota is laughing at us for taking Sage and Reynaud off their hands for our draft picks. What a retarded trade. Bomar was just fine as IRON MAN ELI's backup...Dodge was alright at holding for field goals, and we could have used someone else at PR for a few weeks then brought in Blackmon when he was healthy, anyway. There was no need to trade picks for Sage Rosenfels and Darius Reynaud.

the vikings aren't laughing at anyone. they probably need rosenfeld this week. and dodge has enough problems just with punting.

From what I read, Kiwi was pretty high on Blackmon from their playing days at Boston College. Also, Blackmon is a defensive back, and so there is some added depth there too.

A nice pickup....can't be any worse than Reynaud.

Was referring to our ST coverage.

Man, you are spot on. The weakest link in this team is ST. they can't cover, can't tackle, can't protect, and look like shit. No return man is going to look good playing behind this special team.

But we have great players on ST....so I put the onus squarely on the ST coach. Tom Quinn needs to be replaced ASAP.

Here's an article from last year (and this year is worse if that was even possible) that deals with the subject at hand and hits the nail on the head. It's Firing Time
