    Shockey: 'I live life hard'

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Four seasons in the NFL haven't changed Jeremy Shockey.

The three-time Pro Bowl tight end is still playing hard, partying hard, dying to win a championship, and saying things that will raise the eyebrows of the New York Giants and coach Tom Coughlin.

In a wide-ranging 20-minute session with reporters on Sunday that was mostly positive about the Giants' chances this season, Shockey criticized his own lack of patience, noted that the team's current offense limits him and that Coughlin can sometimes - to put it politely - be annoyingly stubborn.

While candid, the comments were mild compared to those made before his second season in 2003, when the flamboyant player angered late owner Wellington Mara by making a derogatory comment about Dallas coach Bill Parcells - the man who led the Giants to two Super Bowls - and discussing his sexual fantasies in a magazine piece.

"I play hard," the 25-year-old Shockey said during a break at the Giants' training camp at the University at Albany. "In life, I live life hard. I play hard on the football field. That's just my mentality."

If Shockey made anything clear, it was that his desire to win is exceeded only by the frustration when the Giants don't. He can no longer leave the field with a smile after dropping a pass.

"It's all about winning, it's not always about talking to you guys," Shockey said. "I know you get mad at me sometimes when I'm not talking to you. I want to win. I won a championship at every level I have been, high school, college and I definitely want to win one at this level."

Despite catching 65 passes for 891 yards and seven touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl berth and helping the Giants (11-5) win the NFC East title, there were times last season where Shockey was frustrated.

It manifested itself by him flapping his arms, shaking his head or giving some other sign to indicate that Eli Manning didn't get him the ball.

Shockey never intended to show up the now third-year quarterback, adding many times his frustration resulted from being double- and triple-teamed.

"In high school I used to try to bite my tongue off and lip off and bleed everywhere," Shockey said. "Now I know it's going to be another play, but it's hard when you know you can make a play and you don't get the opportunity."

Shockey, who had 74 catches as a rookie under then-coach Jim Fassel, said Coughlin's offensive system doesn't give him the same flexibility.

"Jim set me down and said, 'We are going to make this easy for you,"' Shockey said. "You don't run the routes like they are in the book, you can do what you see."'

Coughlin's offense doesn't give Shockey any options, he said, adding that there have been some changes this season.

"We are almost there, we put new things in this year," Shockey said. "It's an easy adjustment when you have a head coach who really wants to win, but he can be an ass sometimes. But that's what your head coach can be. That's what you need."

Coughlin was not available to the media Sunday.

Shockey was quick to point out his own faults, saying he can get faster, catch the ball better, run more precise routes, block better and be more patient.

"That is probably my biggest downfall as far as the game," Shockey said of his patience. "I want to get started off quick and get the fans into it quick."

Competitive almost to excess and somewhat bizarre at times - he showed up for lunch on Saturday wearing a bathrobe - Shockey sympathized with receiver Plaxico Burress for being visibly angry after not making a catch in the Giants' 23-0 playoff loss to Carolina.

"Everybody makes a big deal about him, why he acts the way he acts," Shockey said. "He's a competitor. Would you rather him walk off or leave something or come back with an AK-47? People act like that."

One thing that Shockey won't change is the way he plays. He goes all out all the time and it has left him with nagging injuries all season. His left hand had a red welt Sunday, and the Giants haven't had any hitting drills yet.

It's the same off the field, where he says that controversy makes him play better.

"Everyone knows I drink here and everyone knows I go out and party but I take good care of my body," said Shockey, adding he doesn't drink to excess. "I take vitamins every day. I get acupuncture, massages, tons of things to keep body healthy.

"If I go out and drink one night, I guarantee the next day I am getting heavily replenished with water and massages," he added. "I respect my body tremendously."

Shockey, who signed a five-year, $31 million contract extension last year, would like to play 10 years. The league's highest-paid tight end also wants to leave without limping. He will quit when he sees his talents diminishing and he won't stay around just to set a record.

"I don't think you can tell how long a person can play," he said. "Maybe I'll get finer with age as wine."

    link

sounds like he has grown up on the field and is living his life to the fullest ........... well untill he helps to get Tiki a ring this year then it will be full

  4. T.O. draws big cheers at Cowboys practice

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) - An hour north of Hollywood, Terrell Owens did his best Saturday to force a dramatic debut to his first training camp with the Dallas Cowboys.

He started out by being fashionably late, making sure he was the last one out of the locker room. Once he finally headed out to the practice field, his face carried an all-business look better suited for a playoff game.

Two hours later, with a mundane session coming to a close, Owens gave the fans what they came to see. Using his size and speed, he ran past cornerback Aaron Glenn, snatched a long pass and raced into the end zone, throwing the ball down in celebration.

A chant of "T.O." started immediately and grew louder at the urging of another newcomer, kicker Mike Vanderjagt. Then Owens made his way back to midfield waving his arms to keep the cheer going.

If there was still any doubt whether Cowboys fans would embrace Owens, it ended right there. As long as he catches passes and scores touchdowns, they'll love him as much as anyone who has ever worn a star on his helmet - regardless of what he once did to the star logo on their home field.

"They're excited for me to be here and I'm equally excited for me to be here," Owens said. "I got it every day in Philadelphia, fans chanting my name each and every day, so I expect that."

Problem is, many people are expecting a lot of other things happened in Philadelphia, such as the confrontations with teammates and coaches that led to an ugly departure. Bracing for them might a better way of describing it.

But Owens, his new teammates and coach Bill Parcells all insist he comes to Dallas with a clean slate. Sure, they know the baggage he carries - "You'd have to be living in a closet to not know some of the things," Parcells said - but they're vowing to judge him only on what they see.

And so far, they like what they've seen.

"He's so physical, so fast," raved quarterback Drew Bledsoe, whose relationship with Owens will be scrutinized as much as Owens-Parcells. "The thing that's probably most impressive is what he does after he catches the ball. He turns up the field like he's trying to score every time he touches it. That's paid off huge for him. He's led the league in yardage after catch, and hopefully that will be the case this year."

It might be too early to start talking about statistical goals since it remains to be seen how Parcells will use Owens. It has often been said that he shouldn't expect to catch 100 passes, but the truth is he's only hit that mark once in his career.

Owens said his only statistical goals are to have "a lot" of receptions and touchdowns. He later said fantasy football team owners should pick him because "if you want touchdowns, if you want somebody to be up there at the top of the leaderboard, then I guess I'm your man."

He seemed to be going for a laugh with those lines. With a more serious tone, he talked about wanting to fit in.

"Bill kind of strives on that running game. I'm behind that 100 percent," he said. "We're going to feed off each other. Some games, the running game is going to be where it needs to be and sometimes the passing is not. And sometimes it's going to be vice-a-versa."

Owens had a brief chat with Parcells, then another with Bledsoe during the first workout. Everyone was full of smiles.

Asked about the conversation with Parcells, Owens said the coach told him, "We're going to have some fun."

Owens knows he's not going to always have such pleasant exchanges with his new coach. That seems to be OK with him.

"I know Bill's the kind of guy that's going to test guys, so to speak," Owens said. "I'm kind of like a couple steps ahead of him in that department. If he gets onto me, I know it's for the good of the team. So I welcome that. ... As long as I'm doing my job, we'll have no problems."

    None?

"Not at all," he said. "I think everybody's speculating, they're kind of waiting for that to happen. So you guys keep waiting."

Parcells insists he's not thinking about when or if Owens will have another tantrum.

"We're going to treat him with respect and see what happens," Parcells said. "Coach him. Correct him. Try to put him in positions to make plays. OK? Make him part of the team. Make him part of the offense. That's what we're going to try to do. ... If it works, it works. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work."

  10. Roethlisberger told he was close to dying

    5780422_36_1.jpg

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said Wednesday night that he was told he was "seconds, maybe a minute away from dying" immediately after his motorcycle accident last month.

Roethlisberger, in his first interview since the June 12 accident, said that he doesn't remember much about the accident when he rammed his motorcycle into a car that was making a left turn in front of him on a Pittsburgh street. He did, however, remember what he was told by people at the scene.

"They told me that I was literally seconds, maybe a minute away from dying because I slit a vein or artery in my mouth or my throat and it was draining blood right into my stomach and luckily the paramedic noticed it and stopped it or else I would have had too much blood in my stomach," he said in Los Angeles where he was for the taping of the ESPY Awards.

"I remember very few things about the accident," Roethlisberger said. "I remember one car turning in front of me, I don't remember the car that hit me, but I remember that first car turning in front of me and the next thing I remember is being in the ambulance and asking, 'Is this really happening?'

"I said, 'Tell me this is just a bad dream,' and he said, 'No, everything is going to be OK,' and he asked me, 'Is there anyone you want me to call?' ... I just gave him two numbers and I don't remember anything until I woke up from surgery."

Roethlisberger underwent seven hours of surgery to repair a broken jaw and other facial bones. Tests showed no brain injuries, although he had a mild concussion. He also lost two teeth and chipped several others.

Roethlisberger was cited for not wearing a helmet when the accident happened.

"That day I wasn't, I forgot it. I literally forgot it," he said. "You know there are times that, people that have been making a big deal for the last couple years about me riding first of all, and then me riding without a helmet, but it's one of those things that I ride with a helmet also. I do a little bit of both. If you don't wear a seat belt every time you ride in the car should I label you as a person who doesn't wear a seat belt? And unfortunately I happened to not have it on that day because I forgot it in the basement."

Roethlisberger said he didn't know if he would ride a motorcycle again.

"I don't know. I am not even thinking about that right now," he said. "To me, right now, like I said when I first started thinking about things, I started thinking about my family. Now that I am doing better and I feel good, now all I am thinking about is football and that is what is on my mind right now. I am getting healthy and I am getting better every day so all I am thinking about is football. I am not thinking about anything else."

Roethlisberger is scheduled to play in a celebrity golf tournament this weekend in Lake Tahoe, Nev.

Including the postseason, the Steelers are 27-4 with Roethlisberger at quarterback. They advanced to the AFC championship game in both his seasons as a starter, winning the Super Bowl in January.

The Steelers won the ESPY for best team and Roethlisberger joined his teammates and coach Bill Cowher onstage to accept the award. It was his first public appearance since the accident.

Roethlisberger didn't appear backstage to talk to reporters.

"I have no concerns about Ben," Cowher said backstage. "He's going to have to get hit a couple times to see if he's all the way back. Hopefully, he can be a great inspiration to a lot of people about looking at life a little more cautiously

  11. I know one is vastly different than the other, Ovechkin scored on bad ice, falling down & with 2 guys draped all over him...... the other kid did it in an OHL skills competition with good ice & no defensemen in his way but the damn thing is just straight up sick.

didn't they do a move like that on the mighty ducks movie?

  12. I'm thinking as long as there's only a few of us participating, we can submit as many as you want. Provided we don't surpass the 25 limit for the poll.

how about a link to the polling place? so's we can vote? I will be participating as soon as I get time.

  13. How the hell did he pull that off anyway, I was working and listening to it on the radio when i could. How the fuck did he manage that shit?

well I wonder where the debri came from after he was put down a lap :brooding: seems to alway be debri when he has a bad day . I wonder if he was missing something from inside the cockpit of that car when he rolled in to the pits after the yellow was trown
