  1.

Yeah it would be a no brainier, I mean the guy can win games without the greatest QB of this generation, and he would basically come in and draft his own players.

Would be interesting to see how he gets along with Gettleman though.

Gettleman is shown the door or rotated to another position. If the idiot Raiders can give Gruden a 10 year contract then you give Belichick an infinity contract including all the souls he needs to consume. The Patriots are all Belichick and a small percent Brady. Never forget the the Patriots went 11-5 with Cassell.

  2. Was he a healthy scratch again this week? I was looking for him, although I only half watch the games now, and didn't see him (on the field or sidelines). If he's still a healthy scratch with a new coach and all these injuries his career is done.

  3. Yeah watch this shit head team win out this season now and end up 6-10 with something like the 10th pick....

I'm sure I'm in the minority on hoping this happens. If this scenario plays out it shows that the issue really was McAdoo going insane and this team isn't a dumpster fire. This would keep Eli for next year and still potentially get a good QB to mentor. If the dumpster fire explodes these last 4 games it just shows that there is nothing to salvage. I'd rather my team not be the Browns.

Hey John Mara, here’s the 10-step plan on how to fix the Giants
    Gary Myers
    10-12 minutes

John Mara looks like he’s aged one year for each of the Giants' 10 losses this season.

“We’ve had an embarrassing season,” he said Monday. “I think most people who know me know how painful that is to me and know how committed I am in trying to put a winning team back on the field. I know our fans are suffering but I’m suffering more. I guarantee it.”

After firing GM Jerry Reese on Monday morning at 10:30 and then firing coach Ben McAdoo, it’s up to Mara to rebuild the organization quickly.

He has enlisted former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi to assist him in the GM process. Accorsi has been a GM consultant for several teams the last few years and Mara holds him in high regard and will lean on him.

Giants Top 5 GM Candidates: How will Ernie Accorsi impact search?

The new GM then will have input into the hiring of the new coach, but Mara and Steve Tisch will have final say. The roster will have to be fixed with smart free-agent signings and the highest and most important draft decision since they acquired Eli Manning on draft day in 2004 for Philip Rivers and a bunch of draft picks.

The Giants were 11-5 last year and made the playoffs. They are 2-10 this year, just fired their coach in-season for the first time since 1976 and if they finish 2-14 it will be their worst record since 1966. They are looking for a new coach and new GM in the same year for the first time since 1979, when George Young was the compromise general manager choice brokered by Pete Rozelle to end a dispute between Wellington and Tim Mara. Young hired Ray Perkins, who hired Bill Parcells.

It brought the Giants out of the dark ages. Beginning with their first championship in 1986, only the Patriots have won more than Big Blue’s four Super Bowls in the last 31 years.

Was last season an aberration? Is this season an aberration?

Giants Top 5 Coaching Candidates: Who should replace Ben McAdoo?

How should Mara fix this mess?

Here’s the Daily News’ 10-point plan:

    1. HIRE DAVE GETTLEMAN AS GM

Gettleman, 66, was in the middle of a strong run as Panthers GM before he was abruptly fired in July. Sources say he is interested in the Giants job.

When Accorsi was Giants GM, he hired Gettleman in 1998 as an assistant in pro personnel, then promoted him to pro personnel director. He was instrumental in the signings of Plaxico Burress and Antonio Pierce. Gettleman stayed until 2012 and was beloved in the Giants organization and by Mara. Accorsi recommended him to Carolina’s Jerry Richardson, who hired him as GM in 2013 and he helped put together the Panthers team that was 15-1 in 2015 but lost to the Broncos in the Super Bowl.

By enabling Reese's and McAdoo’s blunders, John Mara looks worse

Interestingly, Accorsi recommended Jerry Reese over Gettleman when he retired as Giants GM after the 2006 season and Reese did help build two Super Bowl champions. Sources say Mara will not be inclined to take a chance on an up-and-comer like Green Bay’s Eliot Wolf, the son of Hall of Famer Ron Wolf. He wants an experienced executive who can deal with what is now considered an explosive situation. Gettleman has the toughness and experience to handle New York.

What about Chris Mara? John’s younger brother is an excellent personnel guy and is more than qualified. His last name precludes him from getting the job. How could John ever fire him like he just did with Reese? I also don’t think the Tisch family would go for Chris as GM, anyway.

Gettleman was fired by Richardson on July 17 on the eve of training camp. The timing and circumstances were bizarre. Apparently, he upset folks in Carolina when he ran off Panthers legends Steve Smith and DeAngelo Williams and lifted the franchise tag from Josh Norman and there was concern that upcoming negotiations with Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis could get nasty.

Initially, I thought Falcons assistant GM Scott Pioli would be high on the Giants’ list and would be an excellent hire, but that is not going to happen.

I think Gettleman is the guy.

Once a Giant. Always a Giant.

    2. HIRE JOSH MCDANIELS AS COACH

He lasted only 28 games, same as McAdoo, in his first shot in Denver. He was just a kid in 2009 when he got that job after eight years on Bill Belichick’s staff in New England and bombed. But he returned to finishing school in New England and Tom Brady swears by him as his offensive coordinator. He’s worked for Belichick on all five Super Bowl title teams.

McDaniels, just like Belichick, will do better the second time around. It’s a passing league and the Giants are going to be transitioning soon to a young QB, so hiring the best available offensive assistant as head coach will be essential. Gettleman doesn’t have any ties to McDaniels, but they have Super Bowl rings and can learn to work together. Belichick still is very fond of the Giants despite losing to them twice in the Super Bowl and would likely endorse McDaniels taking the job.

    3. CONVINCE ELI TO STAY

If Davis Webb gets meaningful snaps in December games and his play convinces the Giants not to draft a quarterback with what is now the second pick in April, he won’t be ready to start until 2019. If the Giants draft Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold, I remember Accorsi telling Tom Coughlin in 2004 not to even play Manning at all. He believed rookie QBs should sit.

Manning will be 37 next month. He loves the Giants and found out in the last week how much Giants fans love him back. Kerry Collins refused to be Manning’s babysitter in 2004 and was cut. The Giants then signed former Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner, who embraced the opportunity to restore his market value after the Rams released him. He was benched by Coughlin after a 5-4 start.

The issue is whether Manning will want to stay here and mentor Webb or Darnold/Rosen and be Derek Jeter playing his entire career here or perhaps go to Jacksonville or Denver and be the unquestioned starter for a couple of years. Ultimately, it will depend on the vibe he gets from the new regime.

    4. HOPE SAM DARNOLD TRIES AN ELI/ELWAY POWERPLAY

Right now, the draft order is: Browns, Giants, 49ers.

After trading away the draft slots the last two years that enabled the Eagles to draft Carson Wentz and the Texans to draft Deshaun Watson, the winless Browns are going to have to draft a QB. DeShone Kizer is not the answer.

Darnold has until the Jan. 18 deadline to declare for the ’18 draft. My sources believe he’s a better prospect than Josh Rosen. He has a better NFL body and Rosen is injured often. Rosen is more accurate. They both have strong arms.

Any QB would rather come to the Giants than the Browns. If the Browns want Darnold over Rosen, they can hope he will threaten the Browns that he will sit out the year rather than play for Cleveland. The Giants can throw in a second-round pick to flip spots. The Browns can’t take a chance drafting Darnold and endure all the bad publicity if he refuses to play for them.

    5. SIGN ODELL BECKHAM LONG-TERM

For now, enforce the $8.4 million fifth year option, but rip it up once he shows in mini-camp that he is fully recovered from his broken ankle. Then just pray he grows up. McDaniels didn’t back down when Brady was screaming at him Sunday. That’s the kind of attitude the Giants are going to need from their new coach to deal with OBJ. When he’s healthy, Beckham can’t be covered.

    6. SIGN PATRIOTS LT NATE SOLDER

Reese whiffed by coming back with the same five starters from a bad offensive line. That by itself was a fireable offense. He didn’t pursue Cincy veteran left tackle Andrew Whitworth, who solidified the Rams’ line. The Giants are expected to have about $30 million in cap space going into free agency. That gives them the room to entice Solder to join McDaniels. Belichick’s replaceable parts approach will prevent him from engaging in a bidding war.

    7. SHUFFLE THE OFFENSIVE LINE

I would move Ereck Flowers to right tackle, re-sign Justin Pugh and keep him at left guard, draft Ohio State guard-center Billy Price at the top of the second round — right around the same spot they drafted Chris Snee in 2004 — and re-sign G-C Brett Jones. Solder will anchor the line at left tackle.

    8. IF WEBB IS THE GUY, DRAFT SAQUON BARKLEY

Now that it appears Manning will start Sunday at Dallas, interim coach Steve Spagnuolo needs to get Webb on the field. Forget about Geno Smith. Everybody has seen enough. Can you imagine if Webb lights it up the last couple weeks, allowing the Giants to draft Barkley, the Penn State running back. The NFL has devalued backs in this pass-happy era, but Zeke Elliott and Le’Veon Bell are the definition of impact players.

myerscol5s-5-web.jpg Saquon Barkley could become the Giants’ franchise running back. (Abby Drey/TNS)
    9. RELEASE WR BRANDON MARSHALL

He is due to make $5 million in 2018. He’s not a $5 million player anymore. Back in March, I suggested the Giants sign him soon after the Jets cut him. But when the season started, he looked slow and old and disinterested almost from the first snap in Dallas, even though Beckham didn’t play in the game.

    10. LOWER TICKET PRICES BY 4%

Consider it a holiday gift to Big Blue Nation. After the Giants made the playoffs in 2017, they raised ticket prices by an average of 4%. As a sign of good faith after what may only be a two-win season, slash 4% off the 2018 invoices.

  5.

I feel Odell going down does not mean the team loses all the time. They need to step up, no fucking excuses. One wide receiver down does not excuse shit. The o-line was awful and these receivers, because they are not Odell should not be giving up...they are getting paid as #2s and #3s.

Well...the vast majority of the team is on IR now; the most in the NFL again. What can't be excused is the 0-4 start with the majority of the starters. The offense has been broken for a while now. If I am Spagnuolo I'd re-instate Eli and let him run whatever system he feels comfortable with and ride or die with him. Spagnuolo is in an impossible situation so may as well have some fun.

  6. Because most punters are pansies with noodle arms. Can kick a mile and maybe even run...but can't do a damn thing with their upper body. Like a marathon runner who can take on 26 miles but can't do more than 20 pushups.

Weatherford was the reserve QB so he certainly could have done it.

  7. I like the way Mara is shocked that Eli pulled himself. This team is a dumpster fire. The real unanswered question is; why wasn't Eli pulled during the Redskins game for Geno? If he's the QB that would have been a good time when the O was a disaster and Eli was struggling. Again everything from the Eli benching to the suspensions has shown a complete lack of control by McAdoo. Sure come in and practice...and by the way your suspended. How long? I don't know...until my feelz calm down.

  8. This proves the ineptness of the coaching. They have had all year to work Webb up to the # 2 during practice. Sunday Eli is penciled in to go as the #2 under Geno. Webb isn't even going to dress, Webb will be a healthy scratch as he has been all year. All of a sudden Webb will be ready after this game to star? Geno is going no where with the Giants

Which is why nobody should be defending this move. This entire organisation is clueless, as Herc has pointed out, and unfortunately it's top to bottom. Webb will be lucky if he's ready to start in the last game which will not be enough for a proper evaluation. Also Smith has played 3 times (1 start and then torn his ACL) in 2 years and now he's going to expected to show what here? I'll re-iterate it again; THIS TEAM HAS NO PLAN AND THIS IS PURE PANIC MOVE.

  9. Even if a new coach comes in, I think that new coach would benefit from having tape on Webb. New coach may decide to go with Webb and draft someone else with the top pick. Either way, it gives the new coach additional information in order to make a good choice. If the team simply allows Webb to be pushed out the door because they decide to draft a new guy...it just makes things worse I think.

There is only one problem though...Webb hasn't been taking reps in practice or dressing on game day. The real outrage is that the brain trusts game plan seems to be having Smith as QB1 going forward. If it wasn't then why was Smith QB2 when Webb should have been QB2 and taking reps in practice and dressing on game day? Smith should have been cut 5 games ago to make time for Webb. There is no plan here.

The Homer in me hopes that these guys actually have a plan and that Smith is a better QB than Eli and proves us all wrong but the realist in me knows better. There has been no cohesion or vision since day one with this team. This is a clear panic mode reaction to the Redskins game and they are throwing shit against the wall praying it will stick. It won't.

  10. Like I said earlier, it needs to be about Webb, not Geno. We know what we have in Geno. Webb is the unknown. Given Webb hasn't even dressed yet this year, I think the Giants are behind a week. Meaning, they should have dressed and given practice reps to Webb starting a week or two ago...likely during the bye...so that when this time came, he could be ready to be evaluated in a real game.

Geno is a backup. End of story.

If they play their cards right, I think Eli could still be the starter next year. Evaluate Webb...if he's the future QB, let Eli play next year, Webb back him up and dress on Sundays. Let Geno walk. If Webb is not the guy, draft a QB at #2 or 3 overall, let Eli mentor him for a year, and then transition to the new QB for 2019.

I don't think they necessarily did Eli too terribly wrong here...I think the major fuckup is that they're going to Geno and not Webb. Had they gotten Webb practice snaps starting with the bye, he'd be ready to go in now, at least for evaluation purposes.

By now in the season you're actually assuming this team has a plan and is functional? :P

  11. He benched himself:

Eli is class all the way through. He's dead on on; why start him for one series or play just to be pulled for another guy? Either he's your guy or he's not. This is going to blow up McAdoo's face big time. Smith is garbage.

  12. I will give him that it's a tough position to play but all the red flags in college are still an issue. He is grabby when a WR jukes him, can't turn his head when in a good position to make a play and clearly can't take criticism. Unfortunately it's not looking good and the D has seemed better since his benching.

  13. If they keep Reese, I won't watch again next season either.

The only positive from the wreckage of this season is the opportunity to pass the torch from one franchise QB to another.

If Mara thinks the guy who turned the Giants into a joke is the guy who should be picking Eli's successor, Mara should sell the franchise.

You guys think the season has hit rock bottom??? No way.

December 10th - the Cowboys are going to come into the Meadowlands and kick our asses, in front of a 75%-80% Cowboy fanbase.

December 17th - the Eagles are going to come into the Meadowlands and kick our asses, in front of a 75%-80% Eagle fanbase.

December 31st - The Redkskins are going to come in the Meadowlands and kick our asses, in front of a 75%-80% Redskin fanbase.

The worst is yet to come. If Reese survives all of that, than outside of blowing a load on Mara's couch, I don't know what would be needed for Reese to get fired.

Well buckle up because only the OC is getting fired this year. The Giants were 11-5 last year and if boat dudes (shower thought...OBJ hasn't had a win since) could catch had a very real shot at beating the Packers. With the major injuries this year I can all but guarantee the coaching staff is going to get a mulligan on this season. If that happens firing Reese would be counter productive. If you fire Reese you fire everyone.

  14. Yeah, I just don't understand how giving Spags control of the whole team will (1) help the offense or (2) help the defense. And if it's not going to help, then why do it? I think waiting for available coaches, lack of doing anything positive, and lastly, risking some sort of spark thereby hurting draft position all play into it...whether ownership would admit to it or not.

I don't think they really want to win at this point, but would never say anything that could even be construed as such. If they fire McAdoo and the team wins two games...all the sudden they might be outside the top 5...forcing a potential trade-up scenario come draft day should they want one of the QBs. We're currently 3rd in draft order...might jump to 2nd should we lose to KC (San Fran is on bye this week). San Fran is also considering starting Garoppolo and San Fran's schedule is far easier down the stretch than ours. So it's possible they win a 2nd game.

If the Giants plans are to win the draft then having McAdoo as coach is a good scenario. Installing Spagnuolo as HC is a no risk endeavour. Win the rest of the games and have a good dilemma or win the draft as before and nuke from orbit. This team has absolutely quit and is the worst team in the NFL. Keeping McAdoo around is asinine at this point. Also to be clear my original post is not to have Spagnuolo as HC next year by default although if they were going to hire internally as they did last year for HC McAdoo over Spagnuolo was a head scratcher.

  15. There is and his name is Spagnuolo. If you think he's just as bad then there is no risk as the Giants will tank anyway. The huge upside is if management pulls the trigger now and the Giants return to the NFL then you have a nice choice to make instead of being desperate. What management will probably do is fire McAdoo with like 2 games left and promote Spagnuolo and then the Giants will somehow manage to win those 2 games. Now the decision is not so clear cut because it could be an aberration with such a small sample size or he could actually be a good coach. Pull the trigger now and get a good view of this mess because this team is currently the worst team in the NFL.
