I believe the 'Curse of the Metropolitans' hangs heavily over the Yankees and prevents the team from taking another title. It comes from the power of subconscious prayer from millions of Mets fans. ESPN did an article on how there are a ton of 'curses' on the bombers, they mentioned Shea Stadium in one and said how they wrecked the mound or something.
