Man that turf was literally just concrete with a carpet on top.

For sure bro... it ended so many careers.  Harry Carson would comment about all of the time and most of the 80s/90s Giants would talk about from time to time.  I once went on that field in the late 80s to meet up with my brother in law who was a member of a Drum and Bugle Corp... the Skyliners from the City who used to perform with the rest of the DCS Drum and Bugle Corps at Giants Stadium and other big football stadiums.  You are so right.  It was a concrete bottom with a thin... one inch over lining that was supposedly bouncy... and was not... covered by the green turf.  It was like playing tackle on concrete.  Mud, and forgiving grass found at the Polo Grounds is what you should be playing on.  The greedy rapacious owners wanted mostly clean uniforms and long striding TD's that were more common on artificial turf.  I loved the experiments with grass in the late 90s and early 2000s.  The way football should be played.  I bet the players appreciated it as well.
