Mets seek eighth straight win over Diamondbacks

Arizona (29-21) at NY Mets (31-19) 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - It has been nearly a year since the New York Mets suffered their last loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Mets seek their eighth straight win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night in the second contest of a three-game series at Shea Stadium.

New York's last defeat to Arizona was last May 31, when Brad Halsey combined with two relievers on a six-hitter in a 7-0 win at Shea. The Mets outscored Arizona, 47-9, in their final six games of the season series and opened this series with an 8-7 victory on Monday.

New York improved to 15-6 in one-run games as David Wright singled in Jose Reyes with one out in the ninth inning. Paul Lo Duca, who is hitting .308 (20-for-65) during a 13-game hitting streak, had four hits while Cliff Floyd and Jose Valentin homered for New York.

The Mets have won seven of their last 10 games and hand the ball to Alay Soler (0-0, 3.00 ERA) for his second major league start. The 26-year-old Cuban defector made his debut Wednesday vs. Philadelphia and settled down after a rough first inning to allow three runs and five hits in six frames.

Arizona's last two defeats have come in heartbreaking fashion. A day after blowing a ninth-inning lead in Cincinnati, the Diamondbacks squandered a 7-6 edge and wasted two home runs by Eric Byrnes.

Despite the last two losses, Arizona has won 10 of its last 14 games and will start Miguel Batista (4-2, 4.60). He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts, including an 8-7 win vs. Pittsburgh on Wednesday in which he allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings.
