Mets, Phillies return to action after Tuesday's marathon

Philadelphia (23-21) at NY Mets (27-17) 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - After playing the longest game in the major leagues this season, the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies need to recharge their batteries when they meet Wednesday.

Carlos Beltran gave the Mets a 9-8 triumph - their third win in four games - with a solo homer in the 16th inning on Tuesday. The contest lasted 5 hours, 22 minutes.

Cliff Floyd and David Wright belted a solo shots and Jose Reyes tied the score in the eighth with a two-run blast against Philadelphia reliever Ryan Franklin in New York's fifth extra-inning game this month.

Andy Soler (NR) makes his major league debut for the Mets. The 26-year-old Cuban defector was 3-0 with a 1.51 ERA this season before being recalled from Class AA Binghamton on Tuesday.

Rookie Cole Hamels (0-0, 3.18 ERA) gets the call for the Phillies in his third start of the season. The lefthander has pitched well in his two prior appearances, allowing just four runs and six hits in 11 1/3 innings without getting a decision.

David Bell hit a three-run homer and Chase Utley collected three hits for the Phillies, who have dropped six of their last seven.

Leslie Gudel just reported that Hamels will be headed to the DL. It will be retroactive from May 19. He will scheduled to come off June 3. He will miss his next scheduled start but shouldn't miss beyond that.
