Giants inquire about Vonta Leach, Pro Bowl fullback released by Ravens

The Giants have reached out to Vonta Leach, the Pro Bowl fullback released today by the Baltimore Ravens, according to a person with knowledge of the discussion who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak for Leach or the Giants.

Leach, who has a reputation as a punishing blocker and leader in the locker room, has also drawn interest from the Miami Dolphins and will visit with the team Wednesday morning, the person said.

Asked about Leach today in East Rutherford after the first practice of a three-day minicamp, Tom Coughlin, the Giants coach, said, "We're interested in everybody."

Henry Hynoski, the Giants' starting fullback, is recovering from surgery last month to repair the medial collateral ligament and a chip fracture to the lateral plateau in his left knee.

Coughlin said Hynoski has been rehabilitating daily at the Giants’ facility. Coughlin said he is hopeful Hynoski will be ready for the start of the regular season.

In the meantime, Bear Pascoe, a tight end, takes over as the Giants’ starting fullback. Pascoe, entering his fifth season out of Fresno State, is not unfamiliar with the responsibilities of playing fullback. In 2010, when starter Madison Hedgecock strained his hamstring, Pascoe stepped in as a stopgap.

Leach, 31, was set to make $3 million this season from the Ravens.

Leach’s agent, Ralph Vitolo, told Houston's KRIV-TV earlier today that Leach prefers to join the Houston Texans. Leach played for the Texans from 2007-10.

Staff writer Michael J. Fensom contributed to this report.

Leach is a good player and would be a temporary fix until Hynoski was back in full form. And we already have Pascoe filling in for the spot.

The trouble with bringing in older guys with a good resume, is that you have to cut a young guy to make room on the 53 man roster. Even if we got Leach on a one-year cheap, it might mean cutting one of our TE's like Clement....although, I think Clement makes the team as our new long snapper, replacing DeOssie because he can also play a valuable position without burning up a roster spot for the 30 seconds the player is on the field for a long snap.

Just reflecting on Tom Coughlin's comment that Clement has a long-snap like a rifle and along with Pope, has heaped praise on him - not only for being "Ballard-like" as a receiver, but a cut above as a blocker (having been a defensive lineman for his early career) and an excellent long snapper. They want to keep Clement, but they've got 3 TE's already imbedded in the system. I don't know how TC and Pope know he's a good long snapper if they haven't been trying him out there and seeing what he's got.
