With Domenik Hixon lost for the 2010 season long before it began, the Giants have been looking for contingency plans in the punt return game. Today, they added another.

The team was awarded Chris Davis off waivers from the Bengals, who had signed him in March. The former fourth-round pick of the Titans in 2007 missed last season after suffering a hamstring injury in the preseason and was recently let go by Cincinnati.

Davis averaged 9.5 yards per punt return as a rookie with a long return of 39 yards. But in 2008, he had only two returns in five games played. Davis has an average of 26 yards per return on six career kick returns.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese admitted during minicamp he was more concerned about the team's punt returns than kick returns after the loss of Hixon to a torn knee ligament. Davis will join a group of potential punt returners that includes Aaron Ross, Sinorice Moss, Mario Manningham and rookie Chad Jones.

The addition of Davis, along with the signing of a pair of draft picks in guard Mitch Petrus (fifth round) and punter Matt Dodge (seventh round), puts the Giants back at the 80-man roster limit.

Aaron Ross should not be returning kicks.. not even in practice. Last thing we need to do is loose him to some BS hamstring injury again.

I agree. Nor Manningham, probably our 3rd best WR...and with no Hixon, if Manningham gets hurt, that means Moss is climbing the depth charts and might actually see the field...

Sinorice Moss just sucks at kick returns. Chad Jones might be a good option, especially if that's the only way we get him on the field because safety is suddenly one of our strongest positions

What sweet, sweet words to read.

Maybe we could get RW back just to safe-catch every punt again?

he'll have to beat out thomas.

That is true... Thomas did have a pretty good season last year. I think it is going to be a pretty close battle in camp and I would bet they end up splitting time depending on match ups... then we have to pray the two of them and Webster stay healthy.

The New York Giants announced that they waived wide receiver/kick returner Chris Davis on Monday.

Davis failed his physical and so the Giants will continue their search for a replacement for Domenik Hixon. The Giants were awarded Davis off waivers after he was let go by the Bengals last Wednesday. Davis did not play last season due to a hamstring injury suffered during the preseason while he was with the Titans.

Unless the Giants acquire another returner, they will look at Mario Manningham, Sinorice Moss and Aaron Ross as potential replacements for Hixon, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury.
