EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants are heading back to the University at Albany for training camp for at least another year.

The Giants and the university also announced on Tuesday that the new deal includes a two-year option to train in New York's capital through 2012.

There has been little doubt that the Giants would return to Albany this year, but the two sides wanted to wait until an agreement was signed before announcing it. Camp will open on Aug. 1.

The Giants have trained at the university, about 150 miles north of the Meadowlands, since 1996. This will be their 15th season in Albany, their longest period at one site in the team's training camp history.

The Giants have officially announced that they will return to the University at Albany for their 2010 training camp.

The Giants have trained on the UAlbany campus, just 2 1/2 hours north of the New Meadowlands Stadium, since 1996. In the 14 years that the Giants have trained at UAlbany, the preseason camp has averaged more than 33,000 fans per summer. One of the fields used is now known as Mara-Tisch Field, and was dedicated on Aug. 16, 2007 in honor of the team's former owners Wellington Mara and Robert Tisch.

The agreement includes a two-year option to have the Giants train on the UAlbany campus through 2012, which happens to be the last year of head coach Tom Coughlin’s contract. Coughlin has long since been in favor of getting the team together at a remote location for summer camp, believing it builds unity. Although the campus doesn’t offer an indoor field in the event of inclement weather, apparently that wasn’t a factor for the head coach.

“I can’t say enough about the cooperation we receive from the university and its staff,” said Coughlin. “The spirit of a common purpose and objective allows our team to get the work done that is necessary for us to compete at the highest level at the outset of the season. Our coaches and players appreciate the opportunity the University at Albany affords us to be the best we can be.”

By agreeing to return to Albany for a 14th summer, the Giants have now surpassed the longest period spent at one site for training camp., which was Pace University in Pleasantville, NY (13 summers, 1975-87).

The Giants previously worked out at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey prior to their arrival on the UAlbany campus.

The players will report on July 31 and will commence with a single practice on August 1 (Sunday) at 3:15, which is a variation from the past when the team would start out with two double-session workouts in the first two days.

The three-week camp will conclude August 20 and will feature five evening practices, the first of which is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 5, at 6:05 p.m.
