  1. His potential earnings in a year is 5 million--and that includes having to make the Probowl. His base is 3.5.

Barret Green was making ~2 million?

It's not going to be too hard to be an upgrade over Green--just stay on the field. And even if he isn't an upgrade over Griesen, which I think he is, we're not going to have to sit there and deal with a long contract before fixing the problem.

Quite frankly, this defense doesn't really need him to be LT. We just need him to stay on the field, and play at a level he's played at before, which has been better than Griesen.

But of course, if he can play at a level close to LT, I don't think I'd be upset. ;)

  2. The contract is great...but do we still have enough money to sign possibly Brentson Buckner and all of our draft picks?

I'd still like to have one more veteran DT.

But, if were "done" with free agency we did very well.

Aren't we trying to resign O'Hara? I could of sworn I read that somewhere...

  3. well here's a better example, larry johnson. he was a good talent and the cheifs got him for a bargain, late in the first. they looked foolish initially, but it's looking like a pretty good idea now, no?

i'm not saying this would pay off immediately, tiki barber probably does have atleast one year left in him. we're just not solid enough at the running back position to not consider drafting a backup.

OK, with Levar signing, I won't disagree as vehemently as I have. I'd still prefer a trade down, but wouldn't mind keeping Williams.

Gotta be flexible with new circumstances.

  4. "We needed a big, power player to add to our defense and LaVar Arrington is that," said general manager Ernie Accorsi. "He has a presence about him and he makes us a better football team. The agreement we came to is a fair deal for the player and a fair deal for the organization.

"We came to an agreement that achieves what everybody wants: the player being rewarded for performance. Which is exactly what LaVar and the Giants wanted."

An incentive-based contract is a good thing. At least if he earns the cap hit, we smile handing over the check.

I'm not going to argue about Larry Johnson's ability, obviously he's talented. He's also running behind one of the best offensive lines in the league. Where Johnson's ability stops, and the O-line's ability starts, I have no idea--but KC did do a good job transitioning from Priest Holmes by getting a guy capable of taking advantage of their line.

---Warning: even more off-topic than our discussion has already been ;) ---

I would, given the choice, have a great O-line than a great RB. Why? An average RB, or RB tandem, will look good behind a great O-line. You need an exceptional RB to look good behind a mediocre/bad O-line. If Luke "Twitchy" Petitgout could learn to start when everyone else does, we have a good line.

    -------------------------------------

If Barber were to (god forbid!) go down, would it hurt our running game? Of course, he's one of the best in the game right now, that's why he's 40% of our offense, and that's why he gets his money. But while there would be a significant dropoff, I don't think our running game would become useless. It will still get the job done, but not to such a spectacular degree. This is where you and I disagree.

Unfortunately, as things stand today, we are in pretty bad shape when it comes to our defense. We still don't have a starter or a backup for WLB, unless we start talking about Emmons, and I don't think too many people here want that. We've done pretty well with a DT rotation, but now we're down two DTs. We have a CB that may or may not see the field again. And we have 6 picks.

Maybe Duckett and Seawright are good enough in rotation, and we just need a backup. Maybe Arrington does sign, and plays at a level that helps. Maybe our secondary is set as it currently stands. Maybe not.

But we're also drafting late in each round, so there's no garrentee that a player in these positions is going to be available, or that he's going to pan out. So I don't feel comfortable drafting just one player in these positions, particularly as things stand now.

So, this is why, in this particular draft, in this particular scenario, I would trade down for more picks. Particularly if we could do so by keeping in the first round, and getting a second.

  6. Speaking of St. Louis:

To be precise, the Rams found their guy 2 years ago in Steven Jackson & Faulk's production had been on steady decline since 2002. Let's not forget that Mashall is going into his 14'th season, he's played alot of football & had a great career.... in his prime there wasn't a defensive player on the field that could touch him one-on-one.

Was it 2 years ago? I guess it was, but Jackson really started coming around this year--or at least enough for me to notice.

I hope my post didn't read like I was disparaging Faulk--he had a great career. I was disagreeing that the Rams had a plan in place to replace him. And clearly he was well into his decline before the Ram's drafting of Jackson bore fruit.

  7. He's also white ;)

Shockey at times can act like a thug but it's not that frequent, at least not as much as Plax.

What the hell does his ethnicity have to do with being a thug or not? Is this a joke I stumbled into?

Plax acts like a thug? He's moody, he can be a Prima Donna, but he doesn't strike me as a thug.

Do you guys have a different definition than the rest of us?

  8. well i dont know but I'm just under the impression they have something up their sleeves, you know? They know the LB situation is bad but when you think about it, with Pierce in the middle I think the LB corps forms around him and you need guys that are speedy and athletic, like Torbor can be, to roam the outside...I like that idea...two speedier LBs to accompany Pierce....and that LB should come to us in the draft.

To clear things up, I dont think the linebacker position is all that bad.

I hope you're right. But right now I see two holes at WLB, and two holes at DT. That's pretty daunting going into the draft. Maybe we get a stud in the first round, maybe not. I'm sure with Pierce in there, a good rookie would be OK. But if that stud goes down, then what?

Emmons on the weak side isn't exactly thrilling me.

  9. To say that where you are selected in the draft predicates how good of a player you will be is rediculous, if that was the only qualification for being a good player then none of the above listed should have ever touched a football & guys like Blair Thomas & Akili Smith should have had Hall of Fame careers.

Some people are unwilling to let players develop, interested in the immediate gain & not the long term, overall picture. We've seen this in the past with players like Ed McCaffrey, players that we were too quick to judge.... then look at what happens. Later in their careers they come back & burn our ass, I just hope that Jurevicius doesn't do that to us again when we face Seattle this year.

You hit it on the head.

And just thinking about Ed McCaffrey makes me weep. I liked him as a Giant, and he would have had a longer career if he stayed with us (his career-ending injury happened against us).

  10. well i guess we can't rule out blackburn to be a stud linebacker than... oh yeah, we can be 90% sure he wont be.

jacobs didnt spell tiki because that's not what he is suited for, the chances of him being a starting runningback in this league are slim to none. the same could be said about ward. we have almost zero depth at runningback. if (god forbid) something happens to tiki barber, we're screwed. it's just silly to pass up on such a great talent when our only starting runningback is over 30 years old. he's done fantastic but you only have to look back at history to know he will slow down soon. look at marshall faulk, preist holmes, emmit smith. injuries happen, and more likely to the older guys. the rams and cheifs had backup plans, the cowboys waited and they sucked for 4 years in a row while they waited for emmit to leave.

There's a difference between a 4th rounder and a UDFA, but then again, what round was Pierce drafted in? As far as Blackburn is concerned, I agree with you--his injury pretty much took that out of the equation.

But to say a guy isn't any good because he's a 4th-rounder in a RB-heavy draft, and has one of the best RBs in the league starting and getting the bulk of the playing time, that's a bit harsh. I'm not necessarily saying that Jacobs is our star running back in the future, I merely said we don't know what we have yet.

You are the only poster I recall seeing this year that believes we have zero depth at RB. That's not an attack, but a truthful observation. With the possible exception of Defensive End, RB is probably the least of our worries this year. And considering that Barber is reaching his peak production, or just peaked last season, I'm not too worried about the position for another year or two.

The Rams had a backup plan? They drafted their guy last year...when was the last time Faulk was a factor?

  11. uhh, he's a 4th round pick. 6'4'' 265. does he really deserve the benefit of the doubt? i just dont expect him to be a starter, and apparently neither does coach coughlin. he was never used in place of tiki barber, strictly on goal line and short situations. there's no reason to believe he is starting material, if he was, he probably would have been picked a lot sooner than he was last year.

There were also a TON of RBs in the draft last year, and 4th rounders picked a couple of positions before him played, and did ok. Fortunately, he didn't HAVE to play in Tiki's place, we had Ward to do that, and only to spell him.

In the role he was given, which was desperately needed, he did well.

  12. According to the draft trade chart they would have to give up their second rounder.

3 picks in the first two rounds can fill some holes...or trade one with a later pick to move up. Ward and Jacobs haven't really been used enough to evaluate them, and maybe Williams is better than both, but I'd rather get more in tune with bigger needs.

  13. ummm, I guess I should agree with you because this signing (at vets min) is incredibly stupid.

I'm just venting, and you just caught in the steam. I just don't have a clue what the front office is doing this F/A, and I'm getting more concerned that they don't, either.

The only thing I can think of is that they are secure with Torbor, and are going to ditch Emmons for cap reasons.
