  1. I think your suggestion to John Mara that Bill Parcells become the Giant GM next season will happen, as the Giants get their first true GM since George Young's departure.

Yeah, could you do that? Because I like my GM to think out of the box about personnel and make decisions like starting Scott Brunner over Phil Simms.

  2. Without the trade, we would have had the DE (who was considered the 2nd-best DE in the draft according to ProFootball Weekly, btw), a low-ranked 2 rounder (probably not Moss), 1 3rd, 1 4th, a 5th and 7th.

We traded down, got Mathias, Moss, Wilkenson, a DT and OT, a safety, and a cornerback.

We are going to be losing a HOF defensive end in the next few years. We are almost assured that there will be a drop-off in production from that position. Having two very good DE prospects compete a year or two before it actually happens will prepare the eventual successor, and make sure the drop-off isn't too steep. I keep making the same point, but I'm glad that they have the foresight to recognize this.

Based on Coughlin's post-draft interview, he seems to be very stoked about the progress both Duckett and Seawright are making, and isn't as nervous about the DT position as we seem to be. But we did draft a DT as well, and the first two UDFAs we signed were DTs.

Considering that he also mentioned Emmons going to weakside(?) this year with LA on the strongside, I'm not even going to hazard a guess on what they are doing. But I don't think they are using the same rules most of us fans are.

  3. So what would you grade our draft?

I would say easily a B, probably better. The concepts behind the picks were solid, and from what I've seen of rankings, we got them consistently at lower picks than they were supposed to go.

  4. i'm so glad marcus vick didnt get drafted, this dumbass cowboys fan i had a conversation with suggested the cowboys take him in the second round.

Him and TO in the same lockerroom--I'd love to see it. It would be better than reality TV, and Dallas taking him in the second would have been heaven-sent for us.

  5. All though I hate him it's time to throw big dollars at Parcells to replace our incompetent GM next year. His choices are out of a text book on how to build a winning team.

That's true. He has built a winning team in Dallas. Not a playoff contender, but a winning team.

His team has faded towards the end of the year for two straight seasons.

  6. There! Now the draft is both smooth and level.

You guys need to relax. This draft is not about starters for this year. It's about depth and starters in future years. Even if these guys don't blow us away in preseason, it's not going to be the point. All we really need them to do this year is be adequate backups. For the first time in who knows how long, we don't need them to be starters this year. Think about it--you should be pretty happy about that. In a few more years, our backups might just get us compensatory picks. You never know.

As for our first round choice: we are going to lose a Hall of Famer in a couple of years with Strahan. That is one major hole for the defense to fill. Do you really want to put all the eggs in the Justin Tuck basket, or do you want to pick between two seasoned, strong players?

  7. Even at his relatively young age, he's been a Giants fan and sports fan long enough to know to not jump to conclusions and to not get too overworked by something like a draft pick or football game. Life goes on ... he'll ultimately learn to live by those words...

Sometimes having immediate access to information is, at best, a mixed blessing. No time to digest, and no perspective.

I try to remember that if the Giants do something wrong, I won't be billed. If they do something right, I'm not receiving a check.

  8. No way would Cromartie beat out Webster this year. Cromartie hasn't played since 2004 and started 1 game in college. The only CB on our roster that he'd beat out as a rookie is maybe Frank Walker.

That is what has had me confused with Cromartie--as good an athelete as this guy supposedly is, he has relatively little on-field experience. It's going to be a couple of years before he starts making an impact, if he ever does. The team that took him in the first round took a big risk, in my opinion.

  9. but we arent improving the DE situation either...

    I think we have.

You now have two very talented young guys who get to watch a future hall of famer and another Pro-Bowler in action. In two or so years, Tuck and Kiwi are going to battle it out for Strahan's starting position. At that point, you have either a starter-caliber backup, or you can trade him for one or two picks. You've now maintained the position as a position of strength, and have extra draft picks.

  10. 1) Moore is moving back to DE. He has not played a single meaningful down in his career and he was a sixthrounder so I dont think we can expect anything from him.

I think we'll have to see with Eric. He was injured very early in training camp last year, and TC and co. thought enough of him not to cut him. He had no shot at the field during the playoff run, especially since Osi and Strahan stayed healthy all year, and Tuck turned out so well.

That they even tried to convert him tells you that there's something about him that the staff likes.

  11. He hits VERY hard. I think he'll be lot of fun to watch. (once he finally gets onto the field).

Don't know anything about the man. I don't pretend to know much about the college game, and simply hope Reese and co. did a good job scouting.

    I was quoting somebody.

  12. The plot thickens:

    1) When last we heard of Eric Moore, he was learning to be an OLB. Has that now been deemed successful and that is why we need Mathias? Or is this simply a matter of replacing a 6th-rounder with a first rounder?

    2) What is the fate of Willie Ponder? Or more importantly, what is the fate of that WR spot? Ponder has made the team strictly for his kick return skills, which no one else seemed to have at the time. Well, now every third player we've picked up has some degree of return skills, and Morton has been able to handle both duties. Ponder hasn't been on the field as a WR in how many years, and although he made the ProBowl as a returner, he didn't dress for half the games. Do we go with 6 or 5 WRs this year? If it's 5, does Moore stick; and does the WR corp look like Plax, Toomer, Moss, Tyree, and choice of Carter/Taylor?

    3) Our linebackers. Who is going where? We seem to have Wilkerson and Short who can back up middle and outside positions and Emmons, Torbor, Arrington, and Blackburn. Is Blackburn out due to his neck, or is Emmons out because of his cap hit?

These and other questions to be answered by the end of August.

  13. Plax,

Wrote this on another thread. Pretty much my opinion on this. I don't think he's really a first rounder, and I doubt he's around for our second round pick.

I don't think I'd even bother drafting WR this year. From everything I've read, we aren't going to find some sensation this year, especially at our draft position. We have the same WR corps as last year, so it's not like we're desperately filling holes (although re-signing Carter might fall into that category). Toomer showed he can still make some great plays last year, hopefully Taylor finally has a healthy season, and Tyree isn't going anywhere. That leaves Carter's spot, and Ponder (low man on the totem pole). Sign a slew of UDFAs, and see if they can beat those two. Ponder is a one-trick pony, so if we can get someone who can return and (god forbid!) run routes and catch the ball occasionally, we've upgraded about as well as can be done with this class. Why waste a pick on someone with whom we really won't be satisfied?

Eric Moore was drafted as a defensive end. I don't know how he'd do on the inside. They already were trying him as a LB.

  14. :furious: Acutally...With Lavar the Giants can Lose...

signing Lavar is giving everyone a false sense of security...its as if everyone is saying, OK, all of our LB issues are solved...we signed Short, and signed Arrington...we need not address this position any further...

this kind of thinking will criple our defense in the "likely" event this guy goes down with injury during some point of 2006...

we should not alter our draft priorities at all !!! it doesnt matter who we signed...

    we need 2 LB's and 2 DT's from this draft !!!

I don't know about "likely event," but I do agree with you on picking another LB or two.

I've kind of warmed up to Short as a backup, as he plays two positions, and I'm not too convinced about our backup MLB, especially after the injury he received. I'd still like to go with Carpenter, not to necessarily play this year, but to groom. He has played both SLB and WLB in his career, so he has some versatility, something Torbor doesn't.

If Torbor beats Emmons, and unless there's a paycut in Carlos' future, I don't see him here by the season opener. So there would still be room for another backup LB.

I'd rather see an OT on the first day, and an additional DT on the second, assuming a worthwhile one is still available.
