  1. What basis do you have to evaluate that Jacobs can block? He hasn't been asked to perform in that role for us. Heck, we don't even know if he can pick up a blitzing linebacker yet. His blocking skills are still very much in question. Now, does he have the frame that would make for a good blocker? Absolutely. However his upright running style is not at all conducive to good blocking. The best fullbacks use leveerage to their advantage. They get low as they approach their target and drive through them. Jacobs doesn't get low on anybody. Based on that tidbit alone I'd likely say he's a horrible blocker but since we haven't seen it on display the jury is still out.

Also, H-Backs tend to be heavily used in the receiving game. Jacobs has little experience in this capacity. With as many good targets this team has the last thing I want to see is us throwing to Jacobs. Remember how horrific it was watching balls bounce off Dayne's shoulderpads into the opposition's hands? Well we've got plenty of targets that can catch so there's no sense testing Jacobs.

Why not use Jacobs as the kicker? He seems as well suited to that role as he is to fullback/h-back.

  2. I'd take Rod Wright of Texas over Wroten or Dvoracek. He's big. He's strong. He makes plays sideline to sideline and he anchors well against the run. He's the 4th best Tackle in the draft IMHO. The talent is there but he needs some coaching to get it out of him. If he plays to his full potential he'll be a force at the next level.

Another way of looking at it is Watson, Wright, Dvoracek and Wroten all have risks associated with them. In Wroten and Dvoracek's case it's off field stuff. In Watson and Wright's case it's motivation and particularly in Gabe's case, conditioning. If we're going to roll the dice on any of these guys I'd prefer to get the guys with much higher upside. Wright and Watson, if they fulfill their potential will be far superior to Wroten and Dvoracek.

  3. because chances are good that he could be there when we select in the third...so it would be foolish to draft him a whole round early.....not to mention he does not have overbearing talent. He is a work horse who never quits and goes 100%, but he does not have eye popping speed, size or strength. Hell, you got him going in the third in your mock. Seems you think second would be a little to high for him, as well. Don't get your panties in a twist...

Well said. Dvoracek isn't really a great athlete. However he's a fierce competitor. He works hard and is the type of player coaches love to have. However when compared to other DT in the draft he doesn't measure up on overall athletic ability. Guys like that are a dime a dozen once you get past the third round. Given that, why take him in round 2? Understand, I like Dvoracek as a player. He reminds me of the Eagles Sam Rayburn ... tough, blue collar workaholic, but 2nd round is too early for him.

CB Daniel Manning is not first day quality. He's a big risk. Anything sooner than round 4 would be a major reach.

  4. Lol.. it's not that, I just hate when people say they don't like him cause of his size... if Carter could catch the ball or Taylor could stay healthy then we wouldn't need a 3rd... and anyways how come Tyree never gets consideration for our 3rd WR?? Is there a reason for that? I like Moss because he's quick and versatile, but we do need someone to step up in the 3rd reciever department

Size is a legitimate concern when discussing receiving talent. These guys have to take hits from safeties and linebackers that sometimes outweigh them by 50 pounds. FWIW, Steve Smith wasn't a first rounder either.

Tyree doesn't have well developed receiving skills. He'll likely never be more than a special teamer for us.

I still don't get where people say we need better play from the 3rd receiver. That position is the 5th option in our passing attack. It's like saying the only thing holding us back from being the top offense in the league is better receiving numbers from our fullback. We have much greater concerns thatn 3rd wideout.

  5. People like Moss because despite his size, he's got great speed, and great hands, and he could be used in a variety of ways. I certainly wouldn't be dissapointed if we used our 1st round pick on Moss.

The thing you have to keep in mind, is that besides DT, the Giants are fairly deep at just about every other position right now, and just because we have 6+ WR's on the roster, doesn't mean they can't look to upgrade, or take the best available player. We also have 4 OT's on our roster, 6 CB's(not including Peterson), 4 running backs, 4 DE's, a crop full of safeties and LB's, it's all relative. And for the most part, Burress and Tyree are the only 2 players who are virtually garanteed a roster spot.

I'm not really in favor of selecting a WR with the first pick or any other pick, but if it happens to be Moss, I'd be pretty happy.

Assessing depth takes more than simply counting the number of players on the roster listed at each position. If Petitgout goes down in week 1 do you really want Whitfield as the starting Left Tackle for the remainder of the season? Whereas if Toomer is injured Carter and Taylor likely get more playing time. You tell me which is a worse scenario.

I still wouldn't say we're deep at LB either.

  6. I'd give it a B-

The Defense gets an A but the Offense gets about a C

Our biggest needs imo after the season ended are as foloows:

    1. Safety

    2. CB

    3. OLB

    4. WR

    5. DT

We have a great, underrated player in Will Demps at Safety, and we revamped our cornerbacks. But, we don't have a '#1' guy. Sam Madison is good but he his aging and slowing down. I pray that Will Pete can get better because has the skills to be one of the best Cb's in the league if healthy.

Everyone seemed so concerned with linebacker's, which i think is stupid. They played great the whole season until the ijuries piled up. And that same onslaught is very unlikely to happen two years in a row. But, Brandon Short is great depth. And, although, LA could turn into a stud here, he really was not needed.

I gave the offense a C because we have done nothing at all to upgrade it. We don't have a #2 qb, the second most important position and did not improve our 3rd WR status at all. Also, i don't like O'hara gettin an extension, if it does finalize. He is undersized and is average. The only thing i like about him is 0 fumbled snaps with Eli.

Hopefully in the Draft we can adress these needs most:

    1. DT Trade up to 10-15 range. our 1st, 4th, and torbor/blackburn

    2. OT, this is luke's last year, hopefully, he'd better pull it together and fast.

    3. CB maybe zemaitis later?

    4. OLB need to improve strong side

    5. WR Need a speedster who can catch

    6. Rb don't know if there could be anything late, let BJ develop

    7. QB sign Jay Fiedler

This is our superbowl year and maybe the beginning of a dynasty with key players locked up :worshippy: :flex:

    Thoguhts?/Discuss

No way in hell was Safety our biggest need this offseason. I can see if you want to make a case for cornerback since most correctly assumed that Will Allen would not be re-signed and Peterson likely wasn't returning from injury. But if it wasn't corner it was outside linebacker. Our LB unit last year basically consisted of one guy doing the work of three. We saw how bad things got when he went out. LB HAD to be addressed. By saying it wasn't a priority you're basically saying that we would've been fine with Green, Pierce and Emmons as starters this year. If you believe that then I'm really not sure what Giants team you were watching last year.

I can't believe there are people who still think upgrading our third receiver slot is a major part of our success this upcoming season. We have not ONE, not TWO, not THREE but FOUR Receiving options we look to before we even think about throwing to our #3 wideout. Our offense did just fine last season without a playmaker at the #3 wideout spot. I don't see how improving that postion makes a significant difference to our productivity.

Will Demps was a nice addition but he's got a ways to go before anybody can call him "great".

I'll at least agree that we need to bolster DT but at the end of the season this wasn't a major need as we still had Clancy on the team and the FO was actively trying to re-sign him.

Left Tackle depth was and still is a need.

  7. Sports Illustrated needs to show some sack.

It's pretty easy to call guys who aren't even slated to be drafted in the first round "overrated". That's f'n lame. That's like me saying Roscoe Parrish, Brandon Jacobs, Heywood Jablowme and some guy you've never heard of were overrated going into last years draft. Seriously, what's the purpose of labelling second tier and lower players "overrated". How the hell can they even be overrated when they're not really even "rated"?

Peter King must've been behind this.

  8. If I could interrupt the juvenile name calling for a minute and return to the topic at hand.

Moss would be a horrible selection at 25. Heck, he might even be there when we pick in the second and I don't think I'd want him then. First of all, there is no way our #1 pick should be spent on a receiver. Secondly, Moss likely only contributes on Special Teams this season and we don't have a glaring need for him there. Third, he's a diminutive guy who may not hold up to the pounding an NFL wideout takes. Before you bring up Steve Smith or Santana Moss for an argument remember there are a lot more "smurfs" who didn't measure up, than those that did.

Move Eric Moore to the middle? Do you even know what the guy looks like? You can argue that Moore isn't even big enough to play Defensive End on this team and you want to move him inside and play Tackle? That might be the most ridiculous statement I've heard this offseason, and lets face it, there have been a lot to choose from.

  9. The value chart doesn't change year to year. The difficulty in orchestrating a trade with next years picks in it is teams don't know their position and thus have no way of assigning proper value. It's part of the reason why we'd have a difficult time getting somebody to take our first rounder this year for their first rounder next year. At 25, the other team is taking a hit on value this year.

  10. Claude Wroten is up to there talents...but Wroten has some big character issues, so that may be a concern.

And I wouldnt take Watson if he was there in the 3rd round.... he lacks motive

I'm not high on Gabe Watson either but if he's there in the 2nd we HAVE to take him. 3rd round? Somebody went biking without their helmet.

  11. I'm happy with Winston or Ryans first at 25. I think Winston is a greater need position but I think Ryans might be the better player and is a perfect fit for the Giants.

Also, I think you should allow Tye Hill as a choice. I don't think it's a longshot to say the guy will be on the board when we pick. (I'd still advocate Winston or Ryans).

I count 12 players that absolutely, no way in hell will be available when we choose.

I count another 6 that are longshots. Tye Hill isn't in either group.

You can't really put "Defensive Tackle" as one option when the remaining options are all players. It flaws the poll.

  12. Of all the teams in the league, they decide to listen to the Ravens thoughts on character?

This is the same team who's mouthpiece is an accomplice in a murder.

The same team who's running back brokers coke deals in his spare time?

Spare me the Ravens thoughts on morality and character.

  13. Logically, trading up is stupid, while trading down (especially in a deep draft class) is shrewd. Logically...

Agreed, the Arrington signing has given us a LOT of options. Trading back may not be a bad thing this year. Especially if we decide DT is the way to go.

  14. Winston had 1 bad game his senior season, and that was against Florida State, which unfortunately for him was one of the first games of the year. Missing an entire season and then having to come back versus the Seminoles is no joke. Had he played poorly the remainder of the season I may have held it against him. Instead he got better every game and handled some quality pass rushers (Daryl Tapp among others). Winston's the real deal.

Besides, how can you advocate drafting Cromartie but nix Winston due to injury concerns?
