EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Giants head coach Tom Coughlin today named Steve Spagnuolo the team's new defensive coordinator. Spagnuolo replaces Tim Lewis, who was dismissed on Jan. 11 after as the Giants' defensive coordinator for the past three years.
Spagnuolo comes to the Giants after eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, the last three as the club's linebackers coach. While he was in that role, middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter was selected to two Pro Bowl berths. In 2005, Trotter was voted to the game after leading the Eagles with 169 tackles, including 13 for a loss. That season, Philadelphia led the NFL with 60 tackles for a loss, including 25 by the linebackers.
Former Eagles linebackers coach Steve Spagnuolo has been named the Giants defensive coordinator.
Spagnuolo was the only coach to work under highly-respected defensive coordinator Jim Johnson during his entire tenure in Philadelphia. During six of his eight seasons with the Eagles, Spagnuolo coached a player who earned Pro Bowl honors.
After two seasons of improvement, the Giants’ defense took a step back in 2006. The unit was ranked 25th in overall defense in 2006, allowing an average of 342.4 yards a game. That was a 15 yards-per-game increase over the 2005 figure. The Giants ranked 14th against the run (114.4 yards a game, an 11-yard increase over the previous season) and 28th vs. the pass (228.1 yards a game, a modest four-yard increase).
The Giants allowed 362 points, a 48-point increase over their 2005 total. The team’s point total had declined significantly in each of the previous two seasons.
Spagnuolo (pronounced SPAG-no-low) helped coach an Eagles defense that is traditionally one of the NFL’s best. This season, Philadelphia ranked 15th in the NFL, allowing 328.1 yards a game. The Eagles were 26th against the run (136.4) but ninth versus the pass (191.7). Philadelphia allowed 328 points, tying the Eagles with Atlanta for 15th in the league.
Spagnuolo originally joined the Eagles coaching staff in 1999 as a defensive assistant/quality control coach working specifically with the team's safeties. Two years later, he was promoted to defensive backs coach, where he spent three seasons tutoring Pro Bowlers Brian Dawkins, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent and Michael Lewis. In those three seasons, the Eagles pass defense ranked in the NFL's top 10 in three key statistical categories: third-down defense, touchdown passes allowed and net yards per pass attempt.
Prior to joining the Eagles, Spagnuolo, 47, spent 15 seasons in the collegiate coaching ranks and two years in NFL Europe.
He spent the 1998 season as the defensive coordinator of NFL Europe's Frankfurt Galaxy, who finished second in the league in total defense en route to a World Bowl appearance. Four of the six linebackers and nine of the 11 defensive starters he tutored went on to play in the NFL. Spagnuolo also served as the defensive line and special teams coach of the Barcelona Dragons in 1992.
A native of Grafton, Mass. Spagnuolo has served as a defensive coordinator on the college level with Connecticut and Maine. In addition, he served as assistant coach at Massachusetts, Lafayette, Rutgers and Bowling Green.
Prior to his stint at Maine, Spagnuolo spent four months as a scout for the San Diego Chargers under then-general manager Bobby Beathard. His first NFL experience came in 1983 as an intern with the Washington Redskins under then-assistant general manager Charlie Casserly.
Spagnuolo was born on Dec. 21, 1959 in Whitinsville, Mass. He attended Grafton High School and earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Springfield (Mass.) College and a master's degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts. He is married (Maria).

He kinda looks like a younger R. Lee Ermey in that picture.
Spag-nuo-lo. I'm going with phonetic pronunciation.
What concerns me is he has that "Stoopid is as Soopid does" look on his face

They are a lot alike a British captain of a heavey cruiser in WWII (disclaimer: this never happened):
Chief Engineer Barclay: Sir, we are dead in the water with no hope of regaining maneuvering power in less than a day
Captain F.U. Stiff Upper: Very good Barclay...carry on.
Chief Navigator Leftenant Stiles: Sir, we are trapped in the most dense field of mines I have ever encountered....
Captain F. U. Stiff Upper: Very good Stiles...no worries... we will find a way out.
Officer of the Day Jameson: Torpedoes....SIR! At least 6...repeat at least 6 wakes in the water...
Commander Pike: Sir it has to be a wolf pack....
Captain F.U. Stiff Upper: Now I have had enough of this defeatism as I can stand for one morning....dismissed gentlemen. (the Captain turns to the annunciator and speaks). Donnelson (the Captain's steward) where is that Earl of Grey, hmmmm?
{The cameras shift to a full panoramic view of the HMS Giant's Folly as she literally evaporates into a cloud of metal, steam, and all things British....
Substitute Giants' Folly for Giants Front Office and you have a nice little window into their mindset.
Hey......I like Earl Grey

I feel like this team is abandoing GIANTS football that is a good defense and an average offense... They want to become the colts not be able to play defesne but have a very good offense
I hate this i think we need to address the defesne more then anything else right now
The main concern should be the defense and eye up a vet wr in FA and a quick shifty back later in the draft, but focus on defense more then anything else right now.
Are you forgetting that they signed something like 7 or 8 free agents last year all defence....Not one offensive free agent. Oh and they also used there first round pick on D...The starting O was the same as last year...The D was completly rebuilt
-
After watching Asante Samuel cover the Colts WR's he would make us a very good D...He really impressed me yesterday

Are you people on crack?
"Players didn't dance in the 80's" Yes they did! Just keep acting like you have never seen the whole team "dancing" after a TD. They all so high stepped all the way down the field...they all so spiked the ball in other players faces.
Here are just 2 examples for you
Billy "white shoes" Johnson
Super bowl shuffle
Yeah Giants Teams didn't celabrate...I want you to keep thinking that as you see players sneak up behind there coach with Gatorade bucket...Yeah thats right, the Giants invented the ultimate celebration
And get off of Shockeys dick...He is the best player on the team and he his a record setting TE....Second fastes TE to 300 catches. Faster then TG...faster then Todd Heap...faster then Gates...Stop your bitching

I did not know he was black? They can hire them?

"The question of why Gilbride's guidance didn't work from day 1 still remains and now Gilbride can't be counted on as a full time solution, since he'll be busy we the rest of the offense."
Okay, that kinda scares me, is Gildbride going to be our OC for the year?
Yeah I kinda agree
-
If you can put together a group of 11 guys to defend a refrigerator against an Onslaught from Rosie O'Donnell and Roseann Bar , then hell yeah . You get my vote
The great defenses of the 80's couldn't stop that onslaught

Everyone wants to have 20 ESPN highlights these days on offense....instead of solid ball control offense for 3.5 - 5 yards for most downs that actually wins championships. Because guess what...when your offense is on the field and is moving positively for a score ...it means the other team does not have the ball. I know it is rocket science...thats why NASA just called me to help them design a replacement for the Space Shuttle.
Stupid ESPN highlight play calling coach
-
Oh no, I don't mean that he needs the ball all the time. I meant that we sit there and ignore him in the first half and then when we're down by 30 all of the sudden we try to get him involved.
Yeah well that falls on Huffy and his retarded calls.....God I hate him Lets hope Gill will be a little better

The Giatns do not need any offensive players in the first round. Bottom line. they need to draft a hard hitting LB and a CB.
RAy Brown(UF) looked mint against OSU and I like that kid Abbate from Wake Forest at LB. Or Siler and Everett from UF at LB. The Giatns need sure tacklers at LB< and all three of those options are tackling machines.
Thats great and all but are any of those guys even first round talent? This is a very sub-par LB year. We dont need to be taking LB's just because we need LB's. We should be taking the best prospect out there... WR / CB / S .....
And dont say "we dont need another WR" Did you see what happened when toomer went down?

ESPNEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Jerry Reese says it was fitting the New York Giants tapped him for their general manager's job on the holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr.
"Not to sound cliched, but I really feel like it's my time to carry the torch," Reese said Tuesday as the team formally introduced him a day after he was picked. He is the third black general manager in NFL history.
"Many people went before me who suffered through this process and now it's my time. I'm looking forward to this challenge. It's my time to keep this dream alive. It's very important to me and I don't take it lightly."
Reese, who has been with the Giants since 1994 in various capacities and was the team's director of player of personnel the last four years, succeeds Ernie Accorsi, who is retiring after nine seasons with the team.
Reese said his career with the Giants almost ended before it began. He had risen in the coaching ranks at Tennessee-Martin, his alma mater, and had his eye on the head coaching position when he was approached by Giants scout Jeremiah Davis, who had also coached at the school.
"He called and said, 'We need a scout in the Southeast,"' Reese said. "I said, 'No way, I'm not going.' But he said, 'Please give us a chance.' And, long story short, here I am."
Accorsi, coach Tom Coughlin and Giants co-owner John Mara all praised Reese's skill at evaluating talent and his no-nonsense approach on draft day as qualities that made him the right pick.
Coughlin got his introduction to Reese during his first draft with the Giants in 2004, the year New York traded with San Diego to acquire quarterback Eli Manning.
"I was very impressed with way Jerry ran the draft," Coughlin said. "The efficiency, the leadership and the way the room was organized. You can waste an awful lot of time on things that aren't critical, and Jerry never let that happen."
The Giants' fortunes are tied to Manning's progress, and the quarterback appeared to regress at times this season. Reese simultaneously defended Manning against a growing chorus of detractors while acknowledging the Giants will do "everything possible" to help his development, including hiring a new quarterbacks coach.
"Eli's progress right now is not where we want it to be, obviously," Reese said. "He's played for two full seasons as a starter, so he's really not that far behind. I think it's overexaggerated. Look at the quarterbacks that are playing now in the playoffs, are those guys that much better? I don't think so. He's our franchise and I hope he'll be here for a long time."
Reese's promotion is one of a series of moves in an overall shake-up of the staff. Coughlin's contract was extended for a year, but defensive coordinator Tim Lewis was released and former offensive coordinator John Hufnagel was replaced for the last game of the regular season and the playoff game by quarterbacks coach Kevin Gilbride.
The only other black general managers in the NFL are Baltimore's Ozzie Newsome and Houston's Rick Smith. There are several black men who have considerable say in front offices, notably Rod Graves of Arizona, whose title is senior vice president-football operations. Ray Anderson was vice president of the Atlanta Falcons for the last four years before moving to the NFL in August as senior vice president of football operations.

I would like a receiver such as Jeff Samardzija. He's a good possesson guy and its about time our offense got some hard to pronounce names.
Yeah I like him too...That whole "I want to play both sports" thing concerns me a little
-
Leading receiver, yes, however most of his catches were in the second half when we were already down and needed to make a comeback. How many times do we have to hear about how the Giants HAVE to get Shockey involved in the game earlier than they do? How many times must we say that the Giants have to get Shockey involved earlier than they do? During one of the last games of the regular season one of the announcers eluded to the fact that out of all the games that Shockey played, he averaged about 1 catch per first half. That's flat out retarded. And no, I wouldn't say the same thing about Plax, cause getting Shockey involved earlier would open Plax up. I have never seen a Giants offense with as many weapons as they have, so why the fuck are we mediocre? Cause we haven't been using any of them correctly.
Oh I agree they have no idea how to use him or any other of our weapons...Im just saying that whole " they dont get shockey the ball " thing is over played he is our leading receiver.
-
I just don't see him as the back that's leading us into the future. I think he can be a decent back but I feel like he doesn't hold on to the ball well and is out there just looking to hit people. I like backs that choose their holes wisely and cut back. Jacobs isnt going to be juking anyone nor is he breaking a 50+ yard run.
