  1. Found a link to this article at Vacchiano's blog.

A broadcast report maintains East Carolina's Skip Holtz is heading to Syracuse to become the new coach of the Orange football team.

The Post-Standard's Donnie Webb indicates The NFL Network is reporting

Skip Holtz will be named Syracuse University's football coach on Monday.

It comes on the heels of East Carolina's 27-24 win over Tulsa Saturday for its first conference championship in more than 30 years. The Pirates (9-4) will represent Conference USA in the Liberty Bowl on Friday, January 2.

Holtz was quoted after his team's victory Saturday that he is "not looking to leave East Carolina", and that "it would have to be a really special situation to get me out of here."

Donnie Webb also reports that Gross and Holtz are expected to be in New York Monday and Tuesday for the College Football Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. Holtz's father, former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz, is being inducted as is former Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson.

  2. wow...the dog actually finds this thread embarrassing...in the same way that you feel when you turn on "Saved by the Bell" embarrassing...so much to be thankful for...in a day and age where thousands are losing jobs, war is in full force in multiple nations, and many have since lost their homes to foreclosures...it nice to give thanks to a man who coaches an nfl team, makes player trades for an nfl team, or is the QB for an nfl team...bravo giant's fans...bravo...

The thread was started in the Giants section. Nothing wrong with Giants nation discussing what we're thankful for in regards to our team on Thanksgiving. Stop sipping the haterade man.

And to get back on topic, there's too much to be thankful for about this team. We aren't perfect, but it's classic Giants football. Who doesn't love seeing Earth, Wind and Fire and our o-line wear down a defense? Eli has cut down on the mistakes and our defense, who everyone thought was done after the losses of Stra and Osi basically said "FUCK THAT" and might be better than it was last year. John Carney, WOW is all I have to say. I loved the signing. He's now tied for the league lead in scoring.

Hopefully we can keep this up, some tough match-ups remaining and we haven't won anything yet but it's been fun watching this team so far this season. GO GIANTS!

  3. I would pass on trading for a closer because we can just sign one through free agency w/o having to give up any prospects and Jenks won't come cheaply.

86er, F-Mart isn't 19 anymore...he just turned 20 on October 10th :P . Seriously though he's doing pretty good in the winter leagues, at least at the plate from what I've read.

  4. I still don't like the idea of paying a closer 15 mill per but if it's true that he'll drop his asking price then that's a different story.

K-Rod is looking to pitch in the same town as A-Rod. The Mets will have a new closer next season, and Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez wants to be the guy who fills their most pressing need when free agency starts at midnight tonight. Fresh off a record-setting 62 saves for the Angels, the 26-year-old All-Star right- hander will vie with the Rockies' Brian Fuentes for the attention of general manager Omar Minaya as the Mets look to replace Billy Wagner, who will miss the entire 2009 season because of Tommy John surgery. Minaya is keeping his plans close to the vest, but a person familiar with the team's thinking said the Mets will pursue a closer right out of the gate in free agency, with starting pitching, corner outfield help, second base and possibly catcher lower on the list of priorities. K-Rod's agent told The Post yesterday that Rodriguez is excited about the Mets and considers them "a good fit" among the four teams supposedly hottest in pursuit of the strikeout artist. "K-Rod's pitched in high-pressure games, he's been in a pretty big market since he was 19 years old and thrives on it," said agent Paul Kinzer, who wouldn't name the other three clubs interested in his client. "New York and the Mets are very attractive to him."

    From metsblog.com

In a recent post to his blog for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark cites executives with two different teams as essentially saying, the Mets are ‘all in’ on Francisco Rodriguez, ‘regardless of what you have heard.’

In fact, the two executives predicted to Stark that Rodriguez will eventually drop his asking price to a three-year deal.

…this is basically what we have all been saying could happen…i’m glad to see the industry alluding to it as well…

…the more and more i think about it, and the more and more people i talk to about the specific players, the more and more i believe K-Rod should be this team’s next closer…a) he is an immediate, perfectly-prescribed pill for the massive hang-over from the end of last season…and b) of all the potential closers, short of Bobby Jenks, who would cost talent in trade, K-Rod is electric, high-energy, he loves the big game, has pitched in a major market, and appears to be a guy who thrives on pressure…and, as you know, he will be faced with tons of pressure the first time he steps to the mound at Citi Field…there will be no time to waste…

I would be happy with Fuentes as well. I also read that we might be interested in trading for Bobby Jenks but I just don't see that happening.

    Thoughts?

  5. Good news...

Webster back to practice for New York Giants

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger

    Friday November 14, 2008, 12:01 PM

CB Corey Webster (groin) was back at practice today with a wrap over his lower right thigh. He was bouncing around, sprinting and changing direction. Looked pretty good to me. I'd expect him to play on Sunday, which is good news for the Giants because Webster has been playing like a top corner all year long.

I'm not so sure about S James Butler (knee). He was just kind of standing around again, just like he was doing yesterday. He's been listed as being limited the past two days and I would expect that to be the case again today. On Sunday against the Ravens, I don't think he'll be out there.

RB Reuben Droughns (neck) and CB Kevin Dockery (back) were working fully, as was LB Jonathan Goff (concussion). Not sure if Goff will be ready on Sunday, but Droughns and Dockery will be.

And finally, LB Gerris Wilkinson (knee) was the only player on the bike and not practicing.

  6. In fact, Ggirl, personally, I can't count you as a true Giants fan for that reason. I believe being a true Giants' fan includes hating all things Philly. I know you don't care, just sayin'.

I don't know man, there's a lot of Giants fans who are Yankees fans that probably don't hate the Phillies. As Mets fans it's natural for us but not for all Giants fans IMO.

  7. Not really surprised by this.

Delgado to return to Mets in 2009 as team exercises option

NEW YORK -- Carlos Delgado's $12 million option for next year has been exercised by the New York Mets.

Following a terrible start, the 36-year-old first baseman hit .308 with 27 homers and 80 RBIs in 84 games from June 27 on. That left him with a final average of .271 with 38 homers and 115 RBIs.

New York had until Wednesday to exercise the option. If the Mets had declined, they would have owed him a $4 million buyout.

  8. For the record I'm not bitter whatsoever about the Phillies winning the WS. I made a thread congratulating them when they made the WS. I'm not jealous at all. It's not about them. A lot of teams in the MLB can't stand us, not just the Phillies.

And Ditto, maybe because I thought the guy made some good points, that's why.

  9. I was reading some Mets blogs today and came across this article and found it interesting. It's somewhat long so I'll just post part of it.

As the fans in Philadelphia celebrate their second-ever World Series championship, I am still pondering the words spoken by the now-retired, surefire Hall of Famer Pat Gillick's words a few days ago, when discussing how his team won the division the past two years. Everyone hates the New York Mets, he said, right? Haven't you heard? The New York Mets have conducted themselves so poorly as sportsmen that Gillick says it helped the Phillies immensely..

The Mets, he told SI.com, celebrate in an untoward way, “ ... it reaches the point where they're taunting the other the team. Everyone should have the opportunity to celebrate. But there's a fine line, and sometimes they tend to go over the line and taunt the other team.''

For anyone that watches the Mets on a daily basis, or listens to sports talk radio, this conflicts with the notion that many fans feel the Mets “lack passion.”

One of the more passionate Mets fans I know, Steve Keane of the well-read blog “The Eddie Kranepool Society”, posted just that on his blog after a Mets loss in September:

The Mets played today's game like there was no sense of urgency I know players are much different from fans as we take every pitch like it’s life or death but my God this Mets team should have come out fired up after losing Friday night instead they played like (bleep). There was no batting practice and no infield practice, so add that to no game yesterday (in fact the only player it seems who was at Shea yesterday was Billy Wags so they all had a full day off) Hard to believe but this team better play tonight like their hair is on fire.

So, which is it, is this team so passionate that their celebrations are a result of their over-exuberance? Or perhaps, is this just more typical anti-New York bias that infects the entire country?

I'm guessing the latter. Because, otherwise, I don't get it.

How many times have you heard potential free agents or players from other cities say how much they don't like New York? It's not a nice place for visiting players, nor is it a very welcoming place for passionless, underperforming millionaires. Even Hall of Fame players are not immune to our expectations. We've booed everybody; Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Duke Snider, even Johan Santana, for goodness sake.

  10. Not only do I think Steve Smith is the best wr on our team but I think he's the best wr EVER. Not only has he been our most reliable target so far but he ALSO has the ability to travel to Carolina on the same day and DOMINATE, even if the game is at the SAME TIME.

    JERRY RICE MY ASS!!!!!

*edit* I've been drinking tonight. I actually think our Steve Smith has the potential to be a black Wes Welker. He catches everything.

  11. The Packers reportedly offered a 3rd and they got turned down after Carl Peterson changed his mind and went up to a 2nd . Gonzo said he would of played for them as well and said he planned to play 3 more seasons. It's a shame for TG that they couldn't get this done.
