Martinez makes fifth attempt for sixth victory

NY Mets (28-18) at Florida (14-31) 7:35 pm EDT

MIAMI (Ticker) - The difference between April and May has been like night and day for Pedro Martinez.

A three-time Cy Young Award winner, Martinez tries for the fifth time to record his sixth victory of the season Friday when the New York Mets open a three-game weekend series against the Florida Marlins.

Martinez (5-0, 2.82 ERA) picked up all his victories in April with a 2.94 ERA for the month. Since then, he has failed to get a decision in his four outings in May, despite a 2.67 ERA during that stretch.

Ranked third in the major leagues with 70 strikeouts, Martinez allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings Saturday against the New York Yankees in the "Subway Series."

Jose Reyes belted a three-run homer and Cliff Floyd and Xavier Nady had two hits each for the Mets, who had their three-game winning streak ended with Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Marlins counter with Josh Johnson (3-2, 2.62), who is 2-0 with a 1.99 ERA in his four outings this month. He did not get a decision Saturday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after surrendering two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 frames.

Joe Borchard hit a three-run homer and rookie Dan Uggla added an RBI triple as Florida completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs with Wednesday's 9-3 win.
