Glavine set to face Pujols, Cardinals

New York (23-14) at St. Louis (24-14), Tuesday, 8:10 p.m. ET

The first-place teams in the NL East and Central divisions open a three-game series, with the Mets trying to rebound after losing five of their last seven games.

The Mets have Tom Glavine pitching in the first game against the Cardinals on Tuesday, and they will be wary of Albert Pujols.

"He's having a monster year so far. He's killing the ball," manager Willie Randolph said. "He's something special. He's one of those guys like Barry Bonds. You have to know when he's coming up. He's a phenomonal player."

Randolph said he would treat Pujols the same way he treats Bonds.

"You have to be, obviously, very conscious of where he is and makes sure he doesn't hurt you," he said. "You don't want anybody, any big boy, to hurt you in a certain spot.

"It depends on where we are in the lineup and where we are in the game, [but] I'll treat him the same way I treat Barry Bonds. But I don't think you are going to go into the game feeling like you are going to walk him every time you see his face."

Cliff Floyd, batting .197 with three home runs and 14 RBIs, was rested the final two games of the weekend series with Milwaukee. He is expected to be starting in left field for the Cardinals series.

Pitching matchup

NY: LHP Tom Glavine (5-2, 2.19 ERA)

He is 17-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 34 career starts against the Cardinals.

MIL: RHP Jeff Suppan (4-2, 4.58 ERA)

After starting 0-2, Suppan has won his last four starts. He has a 2.39 ERA in those four victories.

Player to watch

Pujols is 9-for-17 in his career against Glavine, but all of his hits have been singles.
