Hope he becomes a great player for us.

EAST RUTHERFORD -- The Giants seventh and final selection in the 2014 NFL Draft came when they grabbed cornerback Bennett Jackson out of Notre Dame with the 187th-overall pick in the sixth round.

Jackson is a wide receiver-turned-defensive back who the Giants believe has big upside. He's also a New Jersey native.

Here's more on the Giants' sixth-round pick:

Name: Bennett Jackson

Position: Cornerback

College: Notre Dame

Height/Weight: 6-0, 195 pounds

Stats: Team captain (of course he is..LOL) started 13 games this past season for the Irish. Returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown against Purdue. Started all 13 games (despite a torn labrum) in 2012 as Notre Dame made it to the National Championship game. Began his career as a wide receiver/kick returner before transition to the defensive side of the ball. Also ran indoor track at Notre Dame.

Projected Fit: Moves into a crowded defensive backfield where competition should be fierce in training camp. A spot on the roster is far from guaranteed.

Strengths: Good size, speed combination with a potential big upside. Ran a 4.40 in the 40-yard dash after a disappointing time at the NFL Combine. Good hands being a former receiver. Quality character and good leader.

Weaknesses: Still raw as a cornerback in terms of technique and skills. Can use some refinement. Also can add muscle and strength.

Character Issues: None.

Experts' Breakdown:
• Projected to be a fourth or fifth-round pick by independent draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki.

Here's the scoop on him that I've been able to read up on.

At the combine, he ran a 4.51 due to a pulled hamstring a few days before. Projected to be a higher round pick, his draft stock fell because of that number alone.

However, a couple of weeks later at his pro day at Notre Dame, he was healthy again and this time ran a 4.40, which put him in elite status for a guy as large as him.

He has played safety and CB, but was drafted as a CB. He says he will go wherever the Giants want him to go, either CB or safety. Many of the analysts believe he would be a star if he's made a safety, and should be an excellent CB.

He's big, he's fast, and a hard tackler. He's also got soft hands and was a decent WR before Notre Dame turned him into a CB. He's also a special teams star and will be our new "Gunner", which we haven't really had since we lost David Tyree.

This kid could turn out to be a real steal if everything I've read about him is on. The only negative is that he's had some injuries, but as of now, he is 100%.
