  1. 25. Giants

    Chad Jackson, WR, Florida

John Clayton, ESPN.com senior NFL writer: The Giants don't need a linebacker after signing LaVar Arrington, so they could just take the best athlete available. They will be tempted by the speed at the cornerback position, but Jackson will give them speed at wide receiver, which is needed.

  2. I'm all for taking the BPA on the board, and if Chad Jackson or Santorio Holmes is available I think they should strongly be considered. That being said where does a WR fit on the roster? Right now we have:

    Plaxico Burress

    Amani Toomer

    Tim Carter

    Jamaar Taylor

    David Tyree

    Willie Ponder

I don't think we can realistically carry 7 WR's on the roster, and those guys all seem to be locked in for this year, Carter just got re-signed, Taylor is still young and we don't know what we have with him, Tyree and Ponder are musts for special teams. (Fab 4 please don't bother responding with the "cut Burress he whines and is in Miami posts" we know how you feel already thanks)

So who goes if we draft a WR?

  3. gateb, I think it's best that you ignore these self-proclaimed football experts. When they try to prove something to you, the best reply that you should give them is 'If you know so much, why aren't you running a team?' That ought to keep these people away.

By the way, gateb, you're a better poster then these self-proclaimed football expert can ever dream to become. These people are just trying to get a rise out of you. They think they know it all, but in reality, they are just making stuff up in fine grammatical structure, tricking you into believing it.

Don't fall into their trap, because last I checked, they aren't employed with any professional football organization.

They are simply an evolved version of trolls. They trick you into thinking, by their superior grammatical structure and fine debating skills, that they know football. In fact, they don't know anything.

Gateb, I wholeheartedly agree with you that Chad Pennington was a good QB, a fine talent, that injury destroyed -- Definitely not overrated. Don't let these poopies tell you any different.

    classic.

  4. Let's take Pennington's career year, 2003, and make a breakdown of his passing numbers.

During 2003, he threw 89 passes behind the line of scrimmage, and he completed 71 of them. (71/89, 80% completions)

From 1-10 yards, he threw 147 passes, and completed 115 of them. (78% completions)

From 11-20 yards, he threw 96 passes and completed 61 of them. (63% completions)

From 21-30 yards, he threw 31 passes and completed 9 of them. (29% completions)

From 31-40 yards, he threw 12 passes, completing 2 of them (17% completions)

He threw no passes beyond 41 yards.

Looking at Pennington's stats (he had a total of 399 passing attempts that year), he attempted 43 passes beyond 21 yards (or what most people would term a deep pass)(I am using the term loosely), so out of his total attempts about 10% were deep passes.

Now, comparing that to passers such as Tom Brady (generally known as a dink and dunk, west coast passer) and Drew Bledsoe (who is widely known to have an excellent deep ball), Pennington did not throw nearly as many deep passes. To back this up statistically, Brady attempted 62 passes beyond 21 yards, and this amounts to about 11% of his total attempts (527), while Bledsoe attempted 156 passes beyond 21 yards, and this accounted for a whopping 33% of his total attempts (471). Additionally, Bledsoe attempted 5 passes beyond 41 yards, while Pennington threw none. It is evident, that Pennington's passing profile clearly resembles Brady's (a west coast passer) as opposed to Bledsoe (a deep-passing game QB).

For kicks, I compared the completion percentages between Bledsoe and Pennington in passes from 21-40 yards. Bledsoe's completion percentage came out to 27% (11/41). Pennington's came out to 26% (11/43). Judging from the comparison to Bledsoe (to reiterate, he's widely considered an excellent deep passer), our boy Chad isn't that bad of a deep ball passer at all, and in truth, he really didn't attempt THAT many deep balls anyway.

*All stats are from 2003, to keep things consistent.

This is why you should be on the board on a consistent basis.

  5. Rookie WRs have made immediate impacts.

If Plax goes down, you do realize our WR core is Toomer, Carter, and Taylor right?

Seeing that our main needs have been fileld, I'd be fine with a WR in the first day.

How many rookie wide receivers can you name that had an immediate impact?

Randy Moss and Micheal Clayton....... and?

  6. i am not trying to sound singleminded but, dolphins are pretty good in rbs. u have brown off the tope who is developing into a star. behind him is ricky, who simply smoked defenses the second half of last year after he returned from suspesion. next is travis minor, who has great hands is good in short yardage situations. then u have the plowing fullback-turned-runningback Darian Barnes. Barnes doesn't have hands like Minor, but he is used how Jacobs was last year for the giants.

Isn't Ricky suspended for the entire year?

  7. Really? Would you happen to know any or anything cause i think that's rediculous.

    Such Discrimination :TD:

    It was a rule passed in the 60's/70's to help officials know who was who. QB/K/P get 1-19 WR/TE 10-19 and 80-89 RB/DB 20-49 LB 50-59 90-99 Lineman 60-79.

Thats just off the top of my head. the only exception I can think of is Olin Kruetz the center for the Bears is 57.

  8. I think he might reverse the 56 and take 65. That # is available right? Cause Jason Whittle was cut.

I don't think LB's can have a number in that range. They need to stay between 50-59 and 90-99 I thought.

  9. I totally agree with you. You are absolutely correct. C'mon man, we're Giants fans, we are the very Defenession of drafting the best available player. (Lawrence Taylor) But, if we look into the future, there's two position I think we will need to address. And that is DB and LT....I say we take the best avialable players at that position, let them sit the pine for a few year and watch them blossom right before our eyes.

Yeah I think we agree more than we disagree. You just want to see the best defensive player available taken, and I'm not worried about what position it is as long as it is a good player.

  10. I think regarless if we sign LaVar Arrington, we need to go defense in the first round. I was thinking we should go LB, DB, DT and than maybe LT. But RB and WR is without question the last 2 position we need right now.

-I understand if Tiki goes down we're in big trouble. But you actually believe a rookie RB can replace Tiki? I seriously doubt there's a RB in this draft (besides R. Bush) who can do that. Our best bet is to stick with Jacobs and see what the kid got. If doesn't do the job, than obvious we need to look into getting a RB next year.

-WR...Why? why? why? why do people think we need a WR? Yes, Anami is getting old, and T. Carter and J. Taylor have pan out. But one of the main reason for that is because we are stack in other positions. The 3rd WR is our last option in this offense. Think about it...Plaxico Burress, Tiki Barber, Jeremy Shockey, Amani Toomer...all these player come before our 3rd reciever. There's just not enought beall to go around.

I don't like drafting by need. Look at RB like the Chiefs drafting Larry Johnson, sure he didn't do anything for them the first few years but now the Chiefs are reaping the rewards of taking the best player available a few years back. Everything being equal I'd rather draft a defensive player, but if an offensive player like Chad Jackson or Deangello Williams is available its much better taking a very good offensive prospect than a good defensive prospect.

Besides if we are counting on a rookie defensive player (especially LB) to get us over the top and into the superbowl we are in trouble. Its rare to see any rookie make that kind of difference on a team. So take the best player available for the furture regardless of position and fill the rest of the needs with proven free agents.

  11.

Call me crazy, but isn't our biggest need defense?

Yes... What does that have to do with my post? I said I think most of our major needs have been addressed (assuming Lavar signs) to the point where we dont need to worry about drafting on the basis of need which is a poor idea.

  12. Edge has had a ton of carries. I still think he's got air in the tires but he's not the proverbial "spring chicken". Arrington looked terrible last year. Maybe he develops into a better player but he gave no indication or reason for optimism. Forget about Shipp.

Maroney wasn't a need pick but considering some mocks had him at the end of the first, I think where the Cardinals got him represented excellent value.

My thoughts exactly about making the pick
