  1. Mosely has done nothing and Jerry's only signed for 1 year. I wouldn't call either a replacement.

Schwartz is the only reliable plug we've signed to fix an offensive line full of holes. The backup center, who played well, what, two years ago who's coming off significant injury...well, he's a good depth signing and may turn out, but I'm not overly confident there. Beatty is a huge, huge question mark. And Snee is done after this year. There's a need for more to be done on the offensive line and getting a young stud who can play for cheap for the next 4 years...I'm all for that.

For this year, I think both qualify as a replacement in the event Snee gets injured. Jerry has done well with the phins and is serviceable as a starter. If/when Snee gets injured this is a good try out year to see if Jerry fits in our long term plans. Having Schwartz at LG should really help Beatty. Like I said though, a back up swing T should still be drafted within the top 3 rounds but doesn't necessarily have to be in round one considering the talent in this years class.

I'm a bit concerned with center as well but they gave him a starters contract. He has plenty of starting experience and should be fully healed by now. I would like to add a center somewhere in rounds 3-5 to compete.

  2. Forgot about Jerry. That's one less issue then. I still think they grab Lewan in the first though... A DE in the 2nd and a TE in the 3rd

I wouldn't be mad at that. I just have huge concerns with what's happening at DT. We rely on a heavy rotation, currently that's Jenkins and Hankins.

  3. Since it's rare for rookies to start I think we have to plan for the departure of Chris Snee. For that I think the Giants grab Lewan in the first and either a DE or Yankey in the 2nd. I see them going after the best available TE/WR in the 3rd then it's a crapshoot thereafter.

I think they have his replacement with Jerry or Mosley.

  4. Issue with Beatty is not the drop off in ability that he showed last year so much as it's the injury that may keep him out of offseason training...delaying him for the start of the season. So while they may not give up on him, they have to prepare as if he won't be available.

An OT in the first round provides insurance (1) should Beatty's injury keep him out of the lineup and (2) should this past year's struggles for Beatty recur. Further, if Beatty does come back to form, the draft pick could take Pugh's spot and Pugh could move inside. And beyond that, Snee coming back this year is a gift...I'd not expect another out of him...so even if you don't want to move Pugh this year, we could move him next to replace Snee with this year's draft pick replacing Pugh at RT.

Any way you cut it, our depth on the offensive line has been abysmal and I, for one, don't feel that the 2 FA signings are enough.

That said, it may be enough to focus the first round pick on a WR, DT, or DE.

That said, the C and G we got in FA will both help.

Although I'm not opposed to drafting Lewan I don't think the OT position is as dire of a need as you suggest. It's already been said that Beatty will be ready by camp. He had a very good season only a year ago we just have to hope he regains that form. With a better LG playing beside him and a new offense less dependent on 5-7 step drops we have reason to be opptomistic. With that said, however, we need a back up swing tackle capable of starting on either side. Lucky for us OT is very talented in the top three rounds.

  5. I'd cut him then resign him to vet min. He isn't a pro bowler by any means but he's still serviceable. Problem with him is he can't be depended on each week. Although I think the theme of this offseason should be getting players who we can depend on and it starts by getting rid of the injury prone guys but snee could be the exception. He's a true a giant and not to mention the HCs son in law. He has a lil pull.

  6. I judge a defense by keeping opponents from scoring, creating turnovers, forcing third down situations and keeping opponents from successful third and fourth down attempts.

Going back to a point Drizzle makes that the rules have been changed year after year to put defenses at a disadvantage and promote high scoring games. Offensive records are being shattered regularly now.

    Someone should tell Seattle.

  7. I'm sure you have seen some of the defenses out there. But it wasn't the issue this season for this team. The game, as it's played today, puts the defense at an inherent disadvantage.

Sure, we could all yearn for the days of Sam Garnes, Percy Ellsworth, the Wills, Christian Peter, Coleman Rudolph, Corey Miller and Widmer, Thomas Randolph, Cedric Jones, etc. etc. :ermm: but we've had it pretty good outside on that side of the ball.

Not counting the lucky midseason stretch vs shitty qbs or the last game of the season we gave up 368 yards per game on average which would have ranked us 24th.. Big jump from 8th.

Gilbrides O was ranked 28th this past season his first time out of the top 15 since 2007. Fewell was ranked bottom 5 in 2011 and 2012. Also, besides 2010, Fewells defenses never finished in the top 10.

My point is our D wasn't as good as the final stats indicated and both Gilbride and Fewell should have been canned after this miserable season.

  8. I'll argue differently. The defense didn't play half as bad as the offense the first 5 weeks. The offense gives up 6 turnovers week 1. Goes 1-11 on third down in a blowout in week two. Week 3 the offense gets shut out, goes 3-12 on third down and only manages 10 first downs. Then there was that week 4 blowout, offense goes 1-14 on third down and 11 first downs on our way two the second blowout of the season. Week 5 the offense turns the ball over 4 times in our own territory along with a pick 6.

I'll breakdown the rest of the season another day.

No need to. I never said the offense wasn't bad. Both were bad. Both need drastic changes unfortunately we can't do that all in one offseason.

  9. It doesn't matter what O we run. Eli needs to be protected and he needs a big body tight end.

What worries me is his accuracy is to erratic for this style of Offense but if we can get him a big target at TE and a receiver who can adjust his body quickly it can work.
