Mussina to take on Jays

Toronto (12-10) at New York (12-10), 1:05 p.m. ET

By Kit Stier / Special to MLB.com

Joe Torre is enjoying watching Jason Giambi bat these days.

The Yankees manager would love to see his first baseman have the kind of game on Sunday against Toronto that he had against the Blue Jays on Saturday. That would go a long way to help the Yankees get on their way to Boston with 2-1 win in their weekend series against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.

Giambi slammed a three-run homer, his eighth home run this season, into the third deck in right field in a four-run first inning, and later added another RBI in New York's 17-6 win over Toronto. "Jason has picked up basically where he left off last year," Torre said. "We are certainly happy that he is as comfortable and confident as he is right now. We certainly need every one of them. It certainly makes our lineup tough to pitch to."

Giambi, a former AL MVP, upped his RBI total to 25, which ranks him near the top of the American League.

Torre is wary of the Blue Jays and knows he'll need all the offense he can get in order to win this series.

"They are very good and they don't know any fear or anything else," the Yankees manager said. "We have to respect that -- and I'm just glad I have the team I have and they keep going at it."

Pitching matchup

TOR: LHP Gustavo Chacin (4-0, 5.11 ERA)

Chacin was 0-4 against the Yankees in 2005, but he beat them in Toronto on April 19. He had 10 runs of offensive support and gave up five runs on seven hits in that 10-5 victory.

NYY: RHP Mike Mussina (3-1, 2.45 ERA)

A win in this start would give Mussina 20 career victories against Toronto and equal is career-best win total against any team -- he has also bested the Twins 20 times. Mussina's only no-decision this season was in his last start, and he beat the Blue Jays in Toronto on April 19, yielding one run over 7.1 innings.

Player to watch

Johnny Damon established a career high by scoring five runs in a win over Toronto on Saturday. The new Yankees center fielder hit two homers, singled, walked, stole a base and reached second base on a popup to Toronto's second baseman that was lost in the sun.
