  1. my original thoughts in the post exactly and the team I was referring to.

The Eagles are very high on LJ Smith and their need is at OL or WR. I don't think they will be drafting a TE. Stranger things have happened though.

  2. This sounds more like a first round pick. Not some dude who is coming off a major knee surgery and doesn't have much starting experience, doesn't make much sense.

Cromartie could very well turn out to be a great CB in this league. But we need a guy thats proven and healthy. Hill is completely healthy has all the tools without the injury concerns. Whats not to like. 4.3 in the 40 is amazing. I'm not a 40 time guy but certainly thats a good thing added to the other skills he has.

  3. Exactly, I would hope people realize this by now.

We only took Webster because he was a 1st round talent that slipped to the second because of the injury. We didn't reach for him he slipped to us.

By the way Tye Hill just ran the fasted 40 in the combine at 4.30. He is excellent in coverage, great speed, and showed ball hawking skills in the senior bowl 1 on 1 drills that i saw. He's our guy if we draft a cb in the 1st. He has Will Allen speed with good ball skills. This is what we lack at the corner position.

  4. exacatly...meet 2006's Corey Webster

He has talent as does Webster. But just like Webster I doubt he gets selected in the 1st round. His times will raise a Red flags(especially coming off a major injury). A corner needs to have speed and a corner who runs almost a 4.6 40 will not be a 1st round selection.

If he was clocked at 4.58 as stated above, do you honestly believe he is 100%??? A player coming off a major knee surgery should not be selected in the first round.

Furthermore, he hasn't started in many games, does this merit a first pick??? Not bloody likely.

There will be other players available at 25 that are of the same skill level with good health. No way we draft him in the 1st. We need guys who can stay healthy.

  5. Vernon Davis will be the new bench mark for TEs. There has never been a TE entering the NFL with his talent before. If the Giants could trade Shockey to move up and get him, they should do it today. Davis will be the top TE in the NFL for a decade.

Shockey is the reason TE are starting to get drafted in the top ten. Shockey has redifined the position. Yeah lets trade our top three TE and some draft picks to move up and draft an unproven talent when we have glaring defensive needs. You are a brillant football mind.

I only saw one of Davis's runs through the gauntlet and unfortunately he was on the receiving end of some bad passes. I did notice that he wasn't running top flight in the drill, something the scouts don't like to see. He also caught some of the passes with his body which is a big no-no but they were also thrown slightly behind him. Despite this his 40 time can't be thrown out. Just as impressive was his vertical leap.

Before you start dissing ACC football and Maryland's program realize that both have taken pretty big steps forward in the last decade. Maryland is completely reborn under Ralph Friedgen. The guy runs a complex offense although he had to scale it back last season due to inexperience at QB. Discounting players based on where they attended school is a pet peeve of mine. If the talent was only in the major programs there would be a lot less draft worthy candidates. FWIW the defending Defensive Rookie of the Year is a Maryland grad. Would you have said Gates isn't draft worth off of his college credentilas?

He has straight line speed and did break a lot of tackles in college. But route running is far more important than flat out speed at the TE position. I wasn't impressed with his hands either. The balls weren't exactly accurate for any of the TE's in that drill but the other TE's didn't seem to have a problem. He is a talent but he will face better tacklers, better coverage, and faster defenders in the NFL. Thats why you can't anoint anyone the best TE in football for the next ten years until he actually proves something at that level. Maryland football is not bigtime football. Is it getting better? Yes. But ACC football is probably the 4th best conference in College football. Lets face the facts Maryland was 5-6 in what was a pretty weak conference last year. They won't be contending for anything anytime soon. Gates was a surprise. No one would have predicted that. But Davis is being annointed based soley on a 4.38 40 time. No one was singing his praises until that 40 time was recorded. Lets let him play before we start considering him the best TE to ever play football. A player from a big time football school isn't a lock to succeed in the NFL let alone a guy from Maryland. I didn't say that a good player can't come from a lesser football program. But the chances are reduced. There are no locks in the draft. Every player is a question mark until they prove themselves on the highest level.

  6. Cromartie ran a 4.49 40 time on a very fast surface at the combine. I wouldn't touch this kid with a ten foot pole in the 1st round. He's only started a few games in his career and has already had a serious injury. I like Tye Hill his fast and watching film on him he is very impressive. Always in good position, has good hands, and plays physical. If I were realistically tageting a corner that will fall to us at 25 I said we will be drafting Hill. I personally think that we should draft a OLB in the 1st and a CB in the second. There will still be some very good corners in the 2nd. Honestly the way Cromartie ran he may fall to the second. I would certainly take a chance on him in the second if he does slip.

  7. Davis was a beast at Maryland ... and he tore up defenses like West Virginia and Virginia Tech, so he wasn't beating up on nobodies. He was a top 10 player prior to the combine, and his workout certainly assures he'll go very high ... but I agree that too much stock is placed in 40 times instead of on-field performance. Davis happens to have both, but there is something that separates the Antonio Pierce's from the Mike Mamula's of the world...

He has all the tools. I'm just not getting that feeling that that will neccessarily translate to success at the next level.

  8. Green has hardly played for us the last 2 years. We won't miss him any. We were overpaying him. Any team that signs him will get him at a much cheaper rate. I believe the reasoning behind the release was a little of both. They probably weren't confident he could stay healthy and he wouldn't accept a pay cut. So he left them no choice but to release him. I agree 100% with the move. Emmons has been more productive and healthier plus he is a veteran. Plus cutting Green saved us more money. So all around it was the right thing to do.

  9. I'm still firmly on the Jamaar Taylor bandwagon. He's my boy.

If he can stay healthy I think he is our guy. Whenever he's been on the field he's made the big plays. I actually like our WR's. Tyree is a solid backup as well. We will need another guy but a 3rd,4th rounder with speed would do. Just because we got shut out by Carolina doen't mean our offense is lacking anything. They just had an off day. As Eli improves it won't matter who the 3rd WR is.

  10. Not exactly as a third WR but just another threat. This has been a problem for a while now. Despite the great amount of talent we have in our WR corps, we still haven't found the guy who can be much more of a threat in the red zone. 7 TDs for each of them looks very good but there are a lot of plays these guys left on the field. Well, maybe not Toomer. Toomer is an exception. He overacheives possibly IMO in the red zone. Shockey is borderline, needs to play harder. Plax needs to prove soemthing though.

Game planning is also a factor. I feel that Hufnagel is finally getting a good grasp on how to call the plays better and I think by year 3, the offense will get a grasp on Hufnagel's system. So that should make for good things.

I am not satisfied with our red zone play and I firmly believe that getting a quality WR is a need for this off-seaosn.

We rarely use the 3 WR set in the Red Zone and honestly I doubt thats a formation that would be run by our offense often. Who do you take off the field so that Stovall can come in when we hit the red zone? I like Stovall too. But I'm of the feeling that the defense needs an overhaul. And honestly I wouldn't be opposed to an all defense draft. Toomers future replacement could be found next year.

I think our struggles in the red zone mostly stem from the QB position moreso than anywhere else. And honestly, how often would the 3rd WR see the field inside the 20?

Exactly. As Eli progresses so will our red zone offense.

  11. It's too bad Winslow's career has been derailed by injuries ... he has awesome talent. He's one of my fantasy sleepers for 2006, assuming he will be recovered.

I agree its to bad what has become of Winslows career. But he's still young and he could bounce back.

I believe people put to much stock in the 40 time and the combines. People are ready to annoint Davis and he hasn't even played a down yet. I predict he won't be no Shockey. Speed is important but intangibles are important as well. I watched the combine and I thought some of the other TE's caught the ball better than Davis. Davis is a physical specimen. But so was David Boston. We will have to wait and see. He will be a top 10 possibly a top 5 pick. I'm not so sure he will prove to have been worth it.

  12. Well, we need something that'll light a fire under our offenses ass especially in the red zone and hopefully a guy like Stovall can contribute to that. We need someone at WR, whether it's a veteran or a a rookie.

Somehow I don't think a 3rd WR will help us all that much in the redzone. Do we have room for improvement in the Red Zone? Yes. But we were greatly improved in that area this year as compared to last year. I think Eli growing as a QB is all we need in that area. Burress, Shockey, and Toomer are all very good in the Red Zone. Each of them had 7 TDs last year. But if Stovall is there in the second I would not be opposed to that pick. But then again if there is a defensive guy that is available that fell to us, that could help us, I'd rather us go in that direction.

  13. He's certainly fast. But that drill around the cones was a bit disturbing. His lateral movement left a lot to be desired. He finished last in that event. I watched a video on him and he was impressive. But I'm not sure this will translate into success in the NFL. Plus he played for Maryland and lets be honest ACC football isn't exactly dominant. He will have to prove himself. Comparing him to Gonzalez,Shockey, and Gates is a bit premature. Anybody remember a guy named Kellen Winslow.

  14. The only way I see them going WR or OT in the 1st round is if the hit another grand slam in free agency and get 2-3 solid starters in the back seven. Unfortunately, the likelihood of the Giants getting both, say, Ronde Barber and Will Witherspoon is pretty slim. Barring another extremely productive FA season, I cannot see them going offense with the first pick...

I agree If we land a FS, CB, and a OLB in free agency then I would have no problem with a WR in the 1st. I am of the same thinking as you that we will have plenty of freed up money for free agency. But to expect another offseason like our last might be a little over the top. And you know I'm an optomistic person. But I would really like to see a young speedy defender with play making ability come out of this draft. Someone that can improve us now and in future. We could add a solid #3 wr for a reasonable price in free agency. We have not drafted a stud OLB in the 1st round since 1984 and that player was Carl Banks. I would love for us to invest a 1st round pick into the LBer core.

  15. I understand injuries on this team is a concern. But, you can't draft based on what if Burress or Toomer gets hurt. You could say that about any position. What if Eli gets hurt? Should we draft a QB in the 1st round just in case he gets hurt? No. There is no way a WR will or should be picked in the 1st round. We have 2 starting Quality WR's and a young talent that has been untapped in Taylor. Tyree if resigned is also a decent depth WR. We have plenty of time to replace Toomer. He had a very good year last year. With Burress, Toomer, Shockey, and Barber how many balls would this young kid really get? Not enough to warrent a 1st round pick. We are ready to compete now. We are a few defensive players away from being one of the most balanced teams in the NFL. Stahan, Tiki, and Toomer are getting up there in age. Now is the time to go for it. And if we draft a WR it would be drafting for the future. That would send the wrong message to the veterans.

  16. With Green, Alexander, Williams, Allen, Greisen all gone. There is no way we draft an offensive player in the 1st round. As much as I agree that Jackson is a great prospect there is no way we draft him. He won't be there when we pick nor will the Giants trade up to get a WR. We will draft a CB, FS, or OLB in the first round. There are plenty of fast WR's in the draft we can draft in the later rounds. I think Jamaar Taylor could fill the 3rd WR spot if given a chance and if he can stay healthy. One again our offense is set, no need to spend a #1 pick on a position that already has talent and starters in place. We will sign a veteran WR in case there is an injury and draft one some time after the 1st round. If there is a great WR that slips into the second round I would have no problem moving up to get him but our 1st rounder should be defense. A first round FS or OLB could start from day one. A CB could contribute just as much in the nickel defense as a 3rd WR could as the 5th option in our offense. We have far more holes to fill on defense. A 3rd WR is a luxury not a need.

  17. I agree we need to address the 3rd WR spot. BUT, we did boast a top 5 offense last year. We were ranked 4th in total offense and 3rd in scoring offense. Taking into consideration these stats I would be pretty ticked if we drafted offense when there are defensive players on the board that can help us. I wouldn't be upset if we drafted a WR in the 2nd but I believe we need to go defense in the 1st. Many so called draft experts are saying Moss may not be drafted until mid second. I could see us trading up if he is still there. But like money said we may fill the 3rd WR slot in free agency. Always remember defense wins championships. Our offense is plenty good enough to compete for a title. Our defense is a few players away. Lets get the defense in order before we start stacking our offense.

  18. I like it but I can't stand it. I don't know about you but I'm a season ticket holder so in mid March I'm thinking about hells bells being played during opening kickoff. And when the season comes, so does school. It's too fast anyway, the season that is.

Give you an example. Two nights ago I had a dream it was Thursday Night opener and we were playing the Colts. We walk up to the ticket guy and my Dad takes out his wallet and there's a hole in it and no tickets

More of a nightmare if you ask me.

I'm still playing football so there is still football in my life. I guess after my last game March 25th I will start to go through withdrawl. But I love seeing the team being developed. Maybe the word favorite was off a bit obviously the season is better. But the NFL offseason is my second favorite sporting event then baseball then basketball.

  19. Nice points, welcome to the boards.

Can't wait for next season either. As soon as the game on January 8th ended, I was filled with excitement for some reason for 06. It should make for a controversial, fun off-season which will hopefully give way to a contender that can go all the way.

Hey what up man. Good to see you're here. I'm looking forward to having a great year next year. This is my favorite part of the season. I love the draft and Free Agency.

There is reason for excitement next year. We have a young team with a young franchise QB who is going to continue to get better.

  20. As you said we are indeed a few players away from a very good team and well balanced

i might add. I think on the offensive side of the ball we have everything in place but

a 3rd WR. Once we get a speedy , crafty player with good moves and great hands that will

go over the middle or deep and our offense will be one of the most potent in the NFL!

The seondary needs help of course and I think this is where FA comes in.

We need help right away and at CB immediately! Also at safety alexander has

experience but too slow now so another FA is essential at that position to enhance

wilson's ability. Webster needs more experience and Deloatch needs more experience

as well. Will Peterson is still a big question mark so draft picks are very likely at CB

and also a LB to replace Griesen who more than likley is gone.

Everthing aside from a 3 WR should be D this year CB's Safety and a LB!

We need Feagles to stay put one more year!

Will be a great season coming up !

If Moss falls to the second round I would absolutley jump on him. If not there are some interesting options in free agency like Warrick & Jurevicius. I agree all our offense needs is a 3rd WR and possibly a pure blocking TE such as Dan Campbell. Everything else should be defense as you said.

The CB can be be solidified with one free agent and a high draft pick. The safety position will need a starter at FS (either a high draft pick or a FA) and SS will need a backup with the departure of Williams (in the late rounds of the draft). If Will Peterson is a no go look for a second low tier FA to be signed.

The LBer position will be filled by a high draft pick and a free agent(Julian Peterson or Witherspoon). Green and Emmons are question marks one of the 2 will be kept the other will be cut. If Green is healthy he will be back.

And yes please Feagles please stick around for at least one more year.

  21. No more worries about if the free agents will come here because of Coughlin. There are some worries about cap room but in all honesty I don't share them. We don't need 5 starting quality players like we did last year. We will clear up enough cap room to sign the neccessary players. Not many shared my fealings last year that we would make a huge splash in free agency and all we did was sign 5 quality starters. We are 2 starting quality pickups from contending(OLB&CB). Plus we have all our picks this year. Resign a few of our free agents, sign a few solid free agents, and fill in depth with a quality draft and we are on our way. We are a young team on the rise and Ernie Acorsi wants a title and will do anything at this point to get this team ready for a title run. I love this time of year. The time when teams are built. Can't wait for March 3rd.

  22. <--was also on the gibril wilson at SS bandwagon. formerly mstrahan, we got into it, but glad to see ya here.

Its not that i thought Gibril wouldn't be a great SS. It was more the fact that I didn't like Williams at FS. But now that Williams was hurt for the 3rd straight year and we can cut him this year with a cap savings I like Wilson at SS. And I look forward to improving the FS position either in Free agency or the draft.
